Thinking of adding on (again) and selling - question for you all.

I'm thinking of adding on at Boardwalk again. Yes, I have addonitis and I'm darned happy about it :) Anyway, I think it will be 50 points and my first question is, should I get two 25 point contracts or just one for 50? I figure we will start selling our contracts in 10 years or so, we have one son and he isn't interested in DVC that much, so we will probably begin the sad process of selling as we get older and the dues get harder to pay. So now I have to think about resaleability (is that a word?) and wonder if there is much difference between the two size contracts. I know the small contracts are easier to sell, I wish I knew that when we bought our first 300 point contract almost 10 years ago.
Secondly, I am going to sell my Vero contract but we have a trip planned in November using most of our points. Our use year is October, can I still list my contract or do we have to wait until we take the trip? It is a stripped contract pretty much so I don't imagine we will have much luck selling anytime soon but I figure I might as well list it. We love Vero but hardly ever go there and we figure we can use the money towards KT when and if that becomes a reality. Or another add-on at BWV, who knows :confused3
Thank you!

How old is your son, and growing up with DVC how can he not be trilled to continue?

He is 36, so he didn't really grow up with DVC. He is also unmarried and has no children so Disney really isn't his cup of tea. Well, that's not completely true, he doesn't mind visiting every couple of years but he isn't interested in owning DVC. Now, if he finds the right woman and starts a family who knows how he will feel!

If I were planning on selling in 10 years I'd just make do in the meantime. I'd never add on with the idea of selling esp for a 2042 resort OR a resort that I didn't feel was a destination resort. That means AKV is the only one at this time I'd even think about. As for the 50 vs two 25 pt contracts, it depends. Personally I'd base my decision on what I intended to do and the only ways I'd get two 25's over a 50 at a single resort would be if that's all they had or if I though I might sell one and keep the other or if I might give them to different people.

I know what you are saying about making do, but we love DVC and I want to spend more time there while we can. I guess we are making hay while the sun shines. But I do know that there will be a day when i have to sell some contracts and I was wondering if a 50 point sells as easily as a 25, which now that I think about it I'm sure it does. I'm not looking to make any money but might as well plan ahead a little and make purchases that will be easier to sell when the time comes. BWV is our first home and I add on when I can, the goal is to stay there for 3 weeks in Jan and then the occasional long weekend for F&W and Christmas.

What about buying a cheaper timeshare and trading in to DVC. Can you go shoulder or off season and make do with a 1 BR? Would you go for a full week? Of course you could supplement those stays with points units if needed as well. Of the greater than 10 stays we've had in the past 3-4 years, only three have been points stays. One for a single night to go with a free 2 night weekend in a 1 BR at OKW, 5 nights (S-F) BWV for my daughter for her honeymoon and a 6 days (Sun-Sat) to go with a 2 BR exchange at SSR for Dec 16 months ago. That approach would also give you other options for non DVC stays.

Gees, Groverdog, I am really sad for you. KIDS! You raise them right and then they get all rebellous with their lack of Disney enthusiasm. I am in the same boat, sort of. Our youngest kid that I had the most and best time with at Disney is now dodging every possible trip with me... and of all my options, I choose to blame it on a lack of Disneyphilia.
I would have to say that 50 vs 25 is negligable in the sale market.
But if I were you, I would consider anything Dean had to say.

We rarely go during the busy season and my extended stays are usually Sun to Friday with a stay at the Dolphin using points that my hubby earns with his travel. I hate staying off property! I have a friend who owns both Hilton & Starwood timeshares and he has never been able to trade into Disney. Now, I don't know how hard he tries but he has never been successful. We stayed at his Vistana once and we were both so unhappy. All we wanted to do was check out of there and into Disney! I guess we have been spoiled. Except for our son, he refuses to be spoiled, well as far as Disney goes :) Our main reason for buying DVC when we did was to be able to share with friends and family. My mother and step-dad spent a lot of time with us at BW, Vero and SSR and loved it. They both passed away in the last year, my mother just a couple months ago and I am so happy that we were able to treat them like we did. We have a huge family trip planned for this fall with a Beach cottage && inn room at Vero and a Grand Villa and studio at BW for the F&W festival. Then were are taking my Dad & stepmom to SSR in Dec for the Christmas festivities in Dec. It has been wonderful and I hope to get another 10 to 15 years out of it. Best money we ever spent!

Trading in Jan, Feb,May, Sept and Oct should be easy for a 1 BR or greater but if you have no interest in going anywhere else ever other than DVC, a different timeshare wouldn't likely be a great choice. Still, I doubt you'll vacation only at WDW or at DVC resorts every year so you still may want to think about it. You could also buy points and have them transferred in once or twice during that time if you wanted. Still, I would recommend against buying points with the intent of selling in 10 years.
