Thinking about a non-specific Room request

We are staying at the Poly for the 4th year in a row in November. The three previous years I requested Rarotonga so we would be close to the main building and bus stops. I am wondering if my chance of being upgraded to something other than the basic view would be more likely if I didn't request a specific building. I am thinking I will just request a king room.

I know upgrades are totally random and not to be expected, but it would be awesome to be given a room where I could catch a glimpse of the castle.

Thoughts on this strategy?

So were you always given Rarotonga when you requested it? If so, why not just request a view of Cinderella's castle. Hey, ya never know. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Yes. We were always given Rarotonga when we requested it. I just booked a "standard view" room, so of the standard view rooms, Rarotonga was my first choice. What I am hoping is that if I don't make a request, I might be upgraded to something better than standard view.

Being upgraded to something more than Standard view is a long shot. If you are happy with something less than your Standard view in Rarotonga then go for it.

But by not making a request will you be okay with a standard room in a building you don't really want to be in?

Upgrades are usually done for specific reasons, like they oversold a specific room category and they need to move people. I could be wrong, but I don't think you requesting something would affect an upgrade one way or another.

If you want a king room, and don't care which building you might end up in, then request it. If you want a particular building that offers standard rooms, then request that too. But a request isn't going to change the likelihood of gettinga huge upgrade to a TPV room. That likelihood is miniscule. And requesting something like a TPV when you've only booked a standard room will just get ignored since it is a bookable category.

I wouldn't make a request for something that I didn't book.

It was just a thought - apparently a pretty dumb one. I'll just stick with requesting Rarotonga like the last few years.

I don't think it's a dumb thought at all. But I think you should request exactly what you want, even if it isn't what you payed for. Worst case scenario.....your request gets ignored. Go for it! If you're okay not being in Rarotonga.

It is my understanding that the king bed rooms are only in Fiji, Niue, Rarotonga and Samoa, so if you request king, it's highly unlikely you would be upgraded to TPV. I mean, I think it's unlikely anyway, but requesting king wouldn't help.

I agree, I wouldn't request something I didn't book either. But what about instead of a certain longhouse, just request what you want to be near. And see what you get.
We were in Samoa last trip, it was a great location, and view was exceptional for a standard room. We faced main pool, could see some lagoon and GF. Very short walk to GCH.

We have booked standard view twice and only put in a request once at Poly for upper floor and balcony. Both times we got Fiji with a view of the marina. We might have been able to see the castle from the balcony if we went to one end and leaned. I can't remember. I know that we could see the Electrical Water Pagent a little both times.
