Things you memorized as a kid and still remember today.

Thought of two more things...

Miss Suzy and her steamboat

Hehehe, haven't thought of that in years. Yup, still know the whole thing. :)

I can do pretty much all the Schoolhouse Rock episodes, we have them on DVD if I need practice. There's an Animaniacs song with all the states and capitals that I know most of, that comes in handy often actually.

Several little rhymes for parts of speech in German: prepositions, verbs that trigger reflexive tense, stuff like that.

I actually see that ad as more stereotypical than actually "racist". Even in 2017, every dry cleaning establishment that I know of in town is owned/operated by Asians. I always liked the way the wife busted her husband in that ad. "Ancient Chinese secret, huh?" as she's holding the Whisk bottle (or whatever the product was!)

I agree, the definitions of "stereotyping" and "racism" kind of overlap, and it's difficult to express what I'm thinking when I'm limited to just those two words. Stupid English.

Back in The Day (like, 1978-1979 or thereabouts) we got Chicago's WGN on our TV (at the time, it was just a local TV station with regional reach, not a nationwide network like it is now). I watched a few shows on that channel, so of course I got exposed to Chicago commercials. One was for... something, and their phone number jingle went like this: "National two nine, thousand." In other words, NA2-9000 (the late 70's were the waning days of when the first two digits of your phone number were expressed with letters).

Today, (312) 622-9000 appears to be someone's private cell phone number in the Chicago burbs, so, you know, please don't call it.

On the subject of phone numbers, there's one from my childhood that's still used today, even with (mostly) the same jingle: Empire Carpet. "Five eight eight, two three hundred. Empire!"

I remember the Empire Carpet.

Do you remember the old black and white clip they'd play at Christmastime about Hardrock, Coco, and Joe?

I was helping DS with his division homework the other day and realized that I still remember Dad (Divide), Mom (Multiply), Sister (Subtract), Brother (Bring Down). He didn't have a clue what I was talking about. :rotfl2:

THIS just came to me. I didn't google.

Baby did you ever wonder? Wonder whatever became of me? I'm living on the air in Cincinnati. Cincinnati WKRP

GOT kind of tired packing and unpacking. Town to town and up and down the dial. MAYBE you and me were never meant to be. Just maybe think of me once in a while. I'm at wkrp in Cincinnati

Roy G Biv - color spectrum

Preamble to the Constitution and a bunch of other Schoolhouse Rock songs

Prologue to the Canturbury Tales in the original Olde English: "WHAN that Aprille with his shoures soote the droughte of Marche hath perced to the roote ...

I guess it stuck in my head because its very rhythmical.

Songs and memory verses from Sunday School
Several lines of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet

and I will never forget Longfellow's Hiawatha.

On the shores of Gitche Gumee,
Of the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood Nokomis, the old woman,
Pointing with her finger westward,
O'er the water pointing westward,
To the purple clouds of sunset.

The above I did look up, not because I didn't remember the words, but because I don't think I have ever written them and had no idea how to spell them!

And some other poems, like Hurt No Living Thing and some Robert Frost.

Calgon, was it not? I'll always remember the riff on this from Wayne's World.

I'm not familiar with Wayne's World, but I just looked up the ad on youtube and yes, it was indeed a Calgon ad.

It's just one of those nostalgia-only jokes where Wayne (Mike Meyers) picks up his girlfriend's (Tia Carerre) laundry and busts her on using "Calgon? Ancient Chinese Secret, huh?" It's literally only funny if you know that commercial.

This is fun!

On old Olympus towering top a Fin and German viewed some hops.

And in 7th grade world history, in learning about European countries and capitals what I remember is : "Sophia Loren has bulges"..... Sofia is the capitol of Bulgaria!

I read the first line in my head and then automatically started singing the rest. Bizarre how that stuff sticks around.

The pledge of allegiance in latin, we had to say it everyday in high school. Still remember it, in my 40's. My DH knows it too(he went to the same high school), so we always joke about it.

Pledge of Allegiance and Star Spangled Banner
McDonalds Big Mac commercial song (2 all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese...)
Junior High and High School fight songs (and I'm 45)
My 1st address and phone number
Gettysburg Address due to the fact that my 5th grade homeroom teacher wouldn't let us go to lunch until we could individually stand up and recite it from memory in front of the class.
The steps to Bill passage and the preamble to the Constitution (thank you School House Rock.)
HOMES is the acronym for listing the Great Lakes
All the prepositions (again due to an overzealous teacher.)

I'm sure there's more!

I was gonna say so unPC. Related topic: I was watching a segment on PC the other night and they were talking about many of the films (Animal House, The Producers to name 2 I recall) that would never be made today as well as songs, TV shows etc.

Full disclosure: I HATED that ad because I knew by then I was gay and I was afraid even the mention of "sissy kid" in front of my parents, friends, etc while watching the ad might make them "suspect" I was queer, even though I'd never been called "sissy". Thanks for bringing up a 40 years plus repressed memory, Red!:love2:

Sorry that I mentioned something that brought you a bad memory. My apologies.

I suspect the movie "Airplane!" couldn't be made today either.

My 8th grade class actually got extra credit during out government section because we asked our teacher when she did the "memorize the preamble to the Constitution" assignment if we could sing it. She looked a big confused and we all said, you know, "Schoolhouse Rock" and she had no idea what we were talking about but said she'd give us all extra credit if we could stand up right now and sing it to her, so the whole class stands up and proceeds to sing the pre-amble to the constitution a la Schoolhouse Rock. It was awesome :thumbsup2 (This would have been '81 so we were the prime Schoolhouse Rock target kids).

The big 3 Catholic Prayers:
Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory Be

Act of Contrition (for First Penance)

7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit (for Confirmation)

Multiplication Tables

Big Mac jingle

Lyrics to many TV themes of the '60s and '70s

For some strange reason I can recite the Evil Queen's transformation spell (in Lucille La Verne's voice)

Lyrics to the Honeybees' "You Need Us" from Gilligan's Island

And so much other random stuff from pop culture....
Don't forget the Memorare!

I was thinking of the Cranial Nerves too! :lmao:

I remember this one, and lots of other songs:

Thanksgiving Day is coming,
And Mr. Turkey said,
"I think that I shall run and hide or I will lose my head"

The pumpkin heard the turkey,
And he began to cry,
" I think that I shall run and hide or I'll be pumpkin pie" :p
