They put Fake nails on my DD12

I've been getting my nails done for years. I'm sorry but as soon as they put that first long "dragon" nail on her tip with the super glue she should have said something. That's a pretty good indication that's she's not getting the same service as before.
And, if she didn't know any better then maybe you should have stayed with her to talk with the tech instead of leaving her there all alone.

That's a good response right there. I could totally see something like that happening with my DD. She's very sweet and compliant and I could never send her into any type of salon without me, or she'd be getting the works without even understanding. I can't tell you how many times we've been in one of those walk-in hair salons where the shampooist asked if she wanted conditioner. Mama's right there to say no thanks. :teeth:

No I couldn't stay with her, there is no room in there -10 desks with 10 seats, 2 seats at the door, the place was packed. I had errands to run, this salon visit was not planned just a spur of the moment thing.

Next time I'll know better and I will be having a word with them next I'm there. Also, we have to either get these take off or filled or something. I'll decide in a few days what to do.

Thanks for all your posts, everyone.

Fungus?

My DD did not want fake nails, she just wanted pretty nails like her manicure last time, she is not manipulative and sneaky like some suggest, it just is not in her character.

The Chinese lady kept smiling & nodding to her amd saying something and she just smiled and nodded back trying to be polite. For all she knew I could have asked for this treatment, she just didn't know and was afraid to say something.

For those who don't know her - which is all of you ;) , you're just going to have to trust my judgement on this.

I believe you. Some people always expect kids to be sneaky or liars, but I don't believe that's the case with all kids.

I think it was a case of the manicurist taking advantage of the situation. The fact that your DD is young, you weren't there and the language barrier. BTW, I don't think that you're to blame for what happened. You figured that your daughter would get the same service as before and the salon was full of people (no concerns for her safety).

I've never had acrylics, so I don't know what care they involve. I just get french manicures and I'm paranoid that I may pick up something. :bitelip: BTW, I get my nails done at the same salon where I get my hair done. I have an appointment this week, the hand massage alone is worth it. :cloud9: :cloud9: :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I don't know about your area, but there are MANY salons with manicurists who have no trouble with English and are understandable. You make want to consider that next time.

As for myself, when I get manicures and whatnot, I will gladly pay extra at my local hair/nail salon than go to one of the mall places. Ick.

Ooh, and you know what I just found out? Our local vo-tech does manicures and pedicures pretty cheap. Do you have one near you? You might consider that. Even though students are doing them, they have good supervision there and I bet they'd do a nice job.

Yes, that's obvious :)

You live in Canada, according to your profile. I don't know if the salons are primarily mall-types or if there are salons like my hair/nail salon. That's all I meant. :confused3 No need to be snarky.

Not every salon that is owned by an Asian family is "icky". In fact, I bet that some "icky" salons are even owned by non-Asians! The salon I go to is owned by an Asian family and, yes, English is their second language. They are very clean though.

In many areas the lower priced nail salons have made it very difficult for others to stay open. I can't think of any in my area that are still around. The only other option in my area would be to go to a very high-priced salon and that is out for me and it def. would be for a 12 year old girl!

OP: I don't think your dd is trying to pull one over here. She was probably a little nervous/excited and didn't know what to say. I know that when I get someone who I feel can't understand me I just try to say as little as possible to them! (And I'm 33!) I wouldn't try to file them down yourself though. They will be very thick. If you decide to let her get them filled, have them file them down when you do that. I have been getting French for the last couple of months and I really prefer that over painted now. You can go a lot longer in between fills without it being so noticable that they are growing out. Have fun with your 12 yo!!!! I can't beleive that I'm going to have one of those little "animals" in 3 years. :goodvibes

I'm sorry. That really came out wrong. Our local mall nail salons aren't very clean and not very reputable. I'm quite sure there are plenty of white, English speaking salons that are nasty, too.

I'm sorry, but this sounds just like The Puffy Shirt episode of Seinfeld. :lmao:

I was a nail tech for years and would have never put artificial nails on a child that age without the parents permission. I think maybe you should at least call the salon and tell them this happened.
If your daughter and you do decide to keep them on for the trip, I agree with the other poster who advised to just filing down the ridge that will form after some growth, then buffing that area afterwards. She should have a pretty smooth nail after that which should look fine with some polish.

I used to get acrylic nails years ago, but I stopped when my best friend got a nasty fungal infection that made her nails fall off! :crazy2:  The ends of her fingers were just raw knubs! It was horrible and she was in terrible pain for weeks. I had to wash her hair for her because her fingers were causing her so much pain! Yeah, I'm a very good friend.

I have yet to go in a nail salon that isn't staffed with Asian nail techs. They speak English very well when they are doing their upsell schtick, but when you decline the "extras" suddenly they don't speak English so well.

My ex-SIL went to manicurist school and opened up her own place. She just couldn't stay competitive with the other nail salons in her area. She went out of business after about 6 months, and none of the other nail salons in her town would hire her.

You know, I can totally see this happening. A nail salon I used to go to was staffed by Asian women, many of whom did not speak very good English. Very hard to understand. Anyway, at this salon, they would always try to "upsell" - if I wanted a manicure, they wanted to give me some sort of fake nails, if I wanted a pedicure, they always wanted to give me the super duper pedicure. Plus, they were always trying to wax something, anything.....

Anyway, one day I went in and asked for a French manicure. The tech starts the hard sell about the fake nails (which I couldn't understand very well.) I kept saying "no just the manicure." Next thing I know, she is trying to put some sort of fake nail on my finger! Of course, I spoke up and made her stop, but I was, well, way over 30....I can see how in this situation a 12 year old may have been too timid to speak up.

I agree with this advice.

Most of the salons we have here are run by Asians. I think they sometimes act like they can't understand you, so they can do what they want.

I had the nails for years, but have stopped getting them. Too much upkeep, cost & worried about the cleanliness of the salons. I can find higher end salons that would probably be cleaner & safer. But then you're talking $45+ bucks for a new set, 25 for refills!

I am bothered by the amount of young girls now getting the "fake" nails. I had a set put on for a wedding about 6 months ago. There were more 12 & younger girls getting nails put on, than there were adult women!! It's getting tougher & tougher to be a parent these days!

I recently got pink and white acrylics put on about a month ago. I go every two weeks to have them filled. I go to an upscale "Asian" salon. Not a cheap place in the mall. Another woman I work with has been going there for a while and I always thought her nails look good. Some of the people that work there do not have the best English skills. They have a salon manager who asks what you want done, whose English is perfect. Normally when I call to schedule my appt she puts into the computer what I want. I also request that mine are cut very short every time.

I had gone to another nail place several years ago that just seemed dirty. The man who was doing my nails had disgustingly dirty hands. I actually pulled my hands away and said your hands need washed. He also put on regular acrylics when I had asked for pink and whites. I removed them myself shortly after...

I would suggest going back and asking for them to be cut down - they can do it much faster for you with a drill - or if you would like to take them off - soak in acetone as others have suggessted. In the past when I have done it - I just put acetone in two small bowls - lay an old towel over each bowl and get comfortable. She will be there for awhile!

there was one salon around my area that was VERY clean with their nail part of the salon. they even used different instruments for every customer. she had a little box with my name on it and it had a file and a bunch of other things in it that she would use for MY nails only. it was pretty cool, but if it wasn't $40 a month to get them done, i would have stayed.

She should have told them they were too long. I have acrylics and they always ask me if the length it OK. Even if I can't completely understand they make it clear they are referring to the length. Sounds like your daughter wanted longer nails. I know my 12yo would come home with 6in nails if I let her.
