They have now put DS6 on valium !!

no they are only giving him the valium ( for the muscles and to relax him NOT WORKING!!) and tylenol with coedine

Tylenol with codeine works for some kids but the vast majority of our kids with fractures are sent home on some form of oxycodone (Roxicet is a combination of oxycodone & Tylenol, and it comes in pills or a liquid form for young children ) or hydrocodone (a slightly weaker pain medicine than oxycodone, but still stronger than Tylenol with codeine). Hydrocodone also comes in a liquid form (Lortab elixir is hydrocodone with tylenol).

A lot of kids are not able to verbalize how much pain they are feeling. Sometimes they don't even realize that what they are feeling is pain! I would ask the doctor for a stronger pain medication--just tell the doctor that your son still seems to be hurting a lot, and that the tylenol with codeine doesn't seem to help. If he/she refuses (I would be very surprised!), try your son's primary care MD.

I should add, you need a written prescription for oxycodone (it can't be phoned in) so your son's physician would be more likely to prescribe the hydrocodone.

they uped the valium to stop muscle spasms and calm but i am calling the doc again at 7pm and hoping they will do something else

It's not muscle spasms. It is the burning agony of a freshly-broken bone. Unless you have broken a major bone you cannot begin to imagine what it feels like. I hope your son gets the pain relief he needs.

Poor baby---I hope he gets some rest soon, and I hope the stress evens out for you, Mama!

Bless his heart ^i^. I'm so sorry and hope dr prescribes proper meds to help his pain, so he feels better real soon, and Mommie can get some rest.

Poor little guy. I hope they phone him in something stronger. We had the lortab elixir for a T&A. Also, the stronger the medicine the more likely it is to cuase vomitting. I just wanted to tell you that Walgreens can make a "rub on" gel/ointment out of phenergan to help with the nausea and/or vomitting(you need a script for it). Good luck.

I have also found that sometimes, the tylenol with coedine had the opposite effect. With me when I take, I actually get hyped up, a little loopy perhaps, but not relaxed or at all sleepy. Perhaps its having the same effect on your son. Anyone else have the same effect from the tylenol w/ coedine.

Also, I would really try using some self soothing techniques to help the poor kid relax. A dimly lighted room, a quite tv show or movie, very slow paced, quite toned and limited conversation. Perhaps rub the temples of his head. My kids use to become very relaxed when I scratched their arms. Hope this helps.

That is terrible!

I too would demand more pain medication. It is not like he will get addicted.

Also ask about giving him benadryl or dramamine. I have done that (with docs permission) to help my kids sleep through some rough times.

How is your little guy doing, and how did you make out??

He probably has both pain from the broken bone and muscle spasms.
My DD has cerebral palsy (CP) and when she was younger had muscle spasm at night. They are very painful. Hers were from spasticity from the CP, but muscles spasms are common with muscles being held in one position by a cast. And, each time the muscle spasms, you not only have pain from the muscle, but also increased pain from the bone, which the muscle is attached to. Valium is a pretty common treatment for muscle spasms.
Valium or any pain medication usually causes sedation, but in some people it causes the opposite effect.
Hope the OP got the help her son needs.

yes he is doing much better thank you everyone
they took him off the tylenol with coedine and upped the valium to 1 3ml tablet
he is finally sleeping the coedine was making him have bad dreams and the valium was better for his leg

We just learned - after going through my DGDhaving her tonsils and adenoids taken out on Jan. 27th - that the tylenol with codeine had the OPPOSITE effect on her - it kept her wide awake and she was getting it every 4 hours!!

My DD (33) takes valium twice a day to control her depression and it doesn't so much as make her a wee bit drowsy.. On the other hand, I was given a short supply of it recently to get through some anxiety issues that were heading my way and I was falling asleep left and right..

Each person - child or adult - will react differenty to meds.. Your doc just needs to find the right ones, so keep pushing for whatever your poor little guy needs..
