Tylenol with codeine works for some kids but the vast majority of our kids with fractures are sent home on some form of oxycodone (Roxicet is a combination of oxycodone & Tylenol, and it comes in pills or a liquid form for young children ) or hydrocodone (a slightly weaker pain medicine than oxycodone, but still stronger than Tylenol with codeine). Hydrocodone also comes in a liquid form (Lortab elixir is hydrocodone with tylenol).
A lot of kids are not able to verbalize how much pain they are feeling. Sometimes they don't even realize that what they are feeling is pain! I would ask the doctor for a stronger pain medication--just tell the doctor that your son still seems to be hurting a lot, and that the tylenol with codeine doesn't seem to help. If he/she refuses (I would be very surprised!), try your son's primary care MD.
