They didn't expect us to tip on the DDP...

Since you don't tip until the end of a meal, I am not sure how some think this somehow relates to getting better service.
OP states they are from the Netherlands which doesn’t have the same tipping expectations as here. I’m sure the cast members are aware they are from Europe which tips differently.

The DDP does not include tips (it did when it first started). There is absolutely no excuse for not tipping the waitstaff. Whatever your opinion of tipping in general is, it is the norm here. Unless your service was horrendous, in which case you should be speaking to a manager, you should be leaving a tip!
So basically you are backing up my argument that tipping in the USA is not tipping at all, it’s become a mandatory charge on a meal. Seriously, I understand that the staff aren’t often paid well in restaurants in the US but as far as I’m concerned that’s an issue between the staff and their employer. Why should I have to go for a meal and worry about leaving a tip to support an underpaid employee so they can afford to look after their family. Tipping should be a small amount of cash left for service if that person has gone beyond what you would expect of them, not something you pay because you feel shamed into it because their employer pays **** wages. The US has created an absolute monster with the insane tipping culture over there and the problem is you guys are feeding it and making it worse, it’s insane. Why doesn’t your government just bring in a minimum wage for everyone in the country like most countries in Europe so everybody HAS to be paid a fair wage and not rely on tips. Yes the price of the meals will increase, but then in will be my choice whether to pay those prices or go elsewhere and not feel shamed into paying a ridiculous tip just for somebody doing their job.

And I think you should show your displeasure by boycotting all US restaurants! Eat in your room. That’ll show’em!

@SnowBeast - the tip is already included in the price of the meal throughout Europe so what happens in the US is just a difference in the manner of final calculation.
Just a reminder but I’m sure you knew that.

no the tip isn’t included in the price of a meal in Europe!! You go tell that to the owner of a restaurant in the UK and I’m sure they’ll say they happily share their profits with the staff. The restaurant will build the basic staff wages into their pricing, as they will in the US, but they don’t pay extra to staff unless they specifically have a service charge, which most places don’t. The difference is we pay a minimum wage which is a fair wage for a waiter. Tips are just a bonus, not relied upon to support a family.

Yea you are right our system sucks and the government is actually doing the opposite and actively encouraging the tipping system by passing no tax on tips legislation. The covid-19 pandemic also gaslighted everyone to tip for things they didn’t tip for before. People go wedding dressing shopping and are asked to tip there!

We pay an obscene amount in the USA and many wait staff (especially at Disney) make well over 6 figures, not that there is anything wrong with it, but they aren’t exactly these poor folks.

You are probably correct for the UK pubs and chip shops but wrong for all of Europe; you’ll notice when you travel more.
With that in mind, I’ve a flight to Paris tonight where “service compris” is indeed the norm but “un pourboire” is happily accepted.
