There is a fox den in my back yard! And now a coyote too! Photo added!

Try to co-exist with them...I'd love to have wildlife like that in my backyard, but I'm sure my 80 lb. Weimaraner would scare them off!

Ann,
Sounds as though it's a grey fox.

Also - keep a close eye on the fox and the coyote. If either of them appears to be stumbling or getting extremely close to the house or people - there's a good chance they may have rabies. Also - look at the fur - if there's bald spots or loose, raggety fur on them, they probably have mange. The coyotes around here and some of the fox have really been hit with the mange for the past several years.

ok I got the pictures back and of course most were blurry one is not too bad and I can email it to someone that knows how to post. Dh looked at it and said the legs look awful strong he is now siding with the wolf impression that DS had. YIKES!!

I don't have a website or I would help you out. I'd love to see those photos :)

Ok I emailed the coyote/wolf shot to Saffron's friend and he will help me post it. I talked with the wildlife/fisheries folks today who said their are no wolves in MA. I don't know if I believe them or not but at any rate they said the "coyote" is around because the fox must be getting ready to have kitts. That I should make noise and bang pans etc when I see the "coyote" to scare it off.
(not until I get a better shot of it so I can prove it is a wolf!
-Dh is such the commedian he left on my cellphone a message which was the tune of "peter and the wolf" asked me if I wanted him to rent me a french horn-what a guy-

Pam why do you think it is a grey fox? ( I want to read up on them if it is) I assumed it was a red fox since it is red. (yup I am no marlin perkins) It is about the size of our old golden retriver mix which was 45 pounds. The coyote/wolf is huge about double that.

I am almost wondering if it was a wolf not a fox looking at various websites-it was grey not red. I can compare better once the pictures get here ( I hope they came out ok)

When you said that you wondered if it was a wolf and not a fox because of the color. There are red, grey and artic foxes. Grey foxes are not all pure grey, however, they have streaks of red, black and silver in with the grey. They are very pretty.

Now, though, I've reread all of your posts and think you meant to say wolf, not coyote. A wolf will be much larger than a coyote. A coyote will usually look and be about the same size of a large german shepherd dog. Coyotes around here have a lot of brown in their fur.

AnnMorin,
I'm jealous that at least your animals MAY not bother you and are interesting, particularly that fox, although the coyote would make me nervous.
We just found out we have some animal in our attic space, most likely a squirrel, not exciting and which we've been told could do massive damage to our home, particularly with the electrical wiring. We've had to call animal control and they are quoting us outrageous prices to help us get rid of our visitor.
But, I'd love to see photos of your pests!

What I meant to say was the 'coyote/wolf" was big and gray and yellow with very muscular legs which made me think it was a wolf,. especaily when I watched it walk and the tale was erect. But the environmental folks say there are no wolfs in MA. they are in Maine but not MA.....I am almost obsessed now to prove it is a wolf.. Had to teach today so I could not watch for it but I ready- camcorder upstairs ready in the computer room out of the case and camera downstairs on the bakers rack..

suzanne- Animal control laughed at me- They claim there are NO wolves in Mass. they also said theat I should not feed my dog outside and to keep lights on bla bla bla... that the "coyote" wants the foxes kitts (which I now want to protect-although it is a wolf not a fox :) ) Living in the county you are basically told to get along with your woodland neighbors. which I agree with as long as they are not aggressive. We have had a black bear for years and he/she is great a beautiful sight about four times a year. walks through the yard and goes on to the golf course, no issues .. Well except for the first time when we had just built and I was trying to spray the grass seed on the dirt and DS kept saying what is that noise?? (5 years ago) and I said it is an airplane (sounded like one grrrrrrrrrrr) turned around and there was a 500 pound bear not 15 feet from us. I screamed and dropped the sprinkler and told DS to run to the porch (found out later BAD idea bears can instinctivly chase runners) but must have scared the s*** out of the bear as it tore off to the golf course and we could hear the golfers screaming.. :)

As scary as that must have been, as long as no one was hurt, I think that's hysterically funny! :teeth:

One time when we were camping, a black bear tore through the camp grounds. We were all screaming and trying to hide in our tents and campers. One guy literally dove into his camper. It looked like the bear was heading straight for him, but it just kept right on going. After it was all over, after we were finished shaking and being shocked, we laughed for hours about it. :p

This behaviour is common among male teenage black bears. "I dare you to do it, what are you? Chicken!"

Their mothers are waiting for them when they get back to the den. "What do you think you were doing? If I told you once......"

Buz

.... and once again, another thread killed!

Still working on getting the "wolf"/coyote picture to saffron's friend. No sign of the animals today so far but it is only 8am. I am now obsessed with proving it is a wolf! I don't have to teach today so I think I will spend most of the day looking out the window. Luckally the computer is right by the upstairs back window which gives me a great view of the woods.

Can't wait to see the photo. Wouldn't it be cool if you could prove them all wrong and it is indeed a wolf!

What animal was it that attacked Kathy Lee Gifford's dog? Was it a coyote or wolf?? Don't mean to get off topic, but she does live in Connecticut and I was wondering about wolves. We have had coyotes and we are not in a rural area.

Buz! :teeth:

I don't think this thread will die for a long, long time. Everyone was just being a sleepyheads last night. :p\

Thanks to Saffrons friend WillyJ here is the photo I took of my wolf
(the one the environmental police claim must be a coyote)

<img src="http://publish.hometown.aol.com/willj0804/myhomepage/wolf1.jpg?mtbrand=AOL_US"height="250">

and also a picture he made of a close up of the wolf

So wadda ya think?

In my opinion, I would say most definitely a wolf!

I've never seen a coyote with fur as long or as thick as that, and I've never seen such a deep slope in the hind legs of a coyote either. Granted, I've only seen captive wolves and coyotes, so that's what I'm basing my opinions on, but I still think it looks more wolf like than coyote like!
