What comes to mind for you when you hear the word groupie?

1.) Young women who follow famous rock and roll bands around in hopes of getting to meet and hang out with one or more members of the band. Someone obsessed with a member or members of a band to the point of almost stalking. Sometimes the person gets used by the band member/members.

2.) Local club/small town bands -- people who follow a certain band from bar to bar, town to town because they like the band's music.

Maggie I like #2 and would not be offended by that one.

Most people seem to think #1 though.

Have you ever read the book "I'm With The Band" by Pamela Des Barres? It's all about the "groupie scene" in California in the late 60's and 70's. Now, those girls were EXTREME GROUPIES!

I agree with both of Saffron's answers although I do think most people think of #1 when they hear the word. But you can really enjoy a band's music without wanting to, ummmm, "do the deed" with the members or the roadies. And I'm sure there are a lot of bands out there who truly appreciate their fans for their loyalty and enthusiasm, not just their "physical attributes and abilities."

The reason I asked this question is because one of my friends at work likes to give me a hard time about seeing The PushStars so often and calls me that. I tend to think that most people think of #1 when they hear that word. Definately not me at all! One of the reasons I love and respect them so much is because they aren't like that with their fans either. They are just like an old group of friends.

Gosh, I have no problem seeing how a woman could just be into a band for their music. (Although I must admit if I were 15 years older, I couldn't have held myself back from Led Zeppelin!). I think your co worker's just dealing in stereotypes and generalities--I hope she's not hurting your feelings when she says those things.

People are into different things for different reasons--just look at The DIS! People here really love Disney, but don't necessarily want to lie down with Mickey! (GOSH I HOPE NOT!!!)
