The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Glynis, I'm so sorry for your loss

I am not feeling grand today and slept most of the afternoon. Thank goodness for slow weeks at work that allow me to skip out.

DH decided pizza sounded better and he's making it :confused3 Don't be too impressed. He bought some Little Caesars make your own pizza from his cousin as a fundraiser for her school.

Sheryl -- I'm so glad you had a good birthday. We're having oysters on New Year's...can't wait!

Here's a picture of the cookie plate. I was going to make more, but my family assured me that they just don't want more and wouldn't eat them, so here is a sample of what I did make:

YUMMO! Good thing that plate is coming to my house tomorrow. :) My favorite is the peanut butter kiss cookie. Ladies, y'all are missing out, let me tell you. Laura is an awesome cookie baker.

And...my crazy day off breakfast:

Tonight's dinner...you've seen this before...sole meuniere:

It's been a very quiet couple of days at work and I am bored out of my skull people! :rotfl:

Tonight I have been trying to finish up a few sewing projects, dinner was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans.

Bad weather coming our way in the morning, maybe! Last time it was supposed to start at midnight Christmas Eve but didn't end up doing anything until mid-day Christmas Day. I am hoping it holds out till midmorning and the temperature stays above freezing, I have too much to do tomorrow.

Bad night for DD, she is teething and is very cranky.

WFD- nachos and chicken fajitas. I really wanted lobsters but DH's work scheduled could be crazy today and he thinks it will be a really late night.
My feast is more Cinco De Mayo than New Years!:confused3

Good Morning!

Just wanted to pop in and wish the bestest friends a girl can have and very Happy New Year!!!! Hope everyone has a great night and even better year.

We are here in PA...not going out tonight. The dog barks a lot when we are not here and we have severe weather alerts so it is not a good night to have the baby out on Pittsburgh.

Love to all. I am really hoping for some downtime later to catch up...

Good morning to all of my dear friends. You have made this year so special - THANKS!!!

I really wanted to go out for New Years Eve for dinner, but I think we are just staying home. Doug is on call, so dinner might be interrupted and we don't want to spend the high prices if we aren't going to be able to enjoy it. I do understand the logic but darn it.

New Years Eve truly is a time I would like to just bury my head until Jan 2nd. 5 years ago today my dear Momma got very sick and passed away in the wee hours of New Years Day. I still beat myself up over not being with her at the end. I can't believe it has been 5 years, I still miss her every day.

So I have no idea what will be for dinner tonight. I think we shall just wing it. The kids are all at different parties - as they sould be - and who knows we might just be brave and go out anyway. We shall see!!

I will BBL to catch up.

Quick check in.

Sheryl - Glad you had a great birthday. Sometimes those birthdays around the holidays mean the birthday girl (or boy) get the shaft. Glad that didn't happen to you. :woohoo:

Ann - Sorry the baby is teething. That is such a hard time for both of you.

Glynis - Very sorry about your loss.

Laura - Those cookies look amazing!!!!! Any time you want to make extras, I think you have my address. ;)

Ellen - I'm holding you to that promise. ;) When you get it, you have to explain it to me. :rotfl: Good luck with the teaching, by the way. I'm notoriously slow when it comes to stuff like that.

Lauren - Hope you have a good time in PA with your hubby.

If I don't get back on, I hope every single one of you have a safe and wonderful New Year's. You are an amazing group of friends and I'm so lucky to have you.

Tonight we are having bbq chicken pizza with way too many appetizers. My mom is making meatballs (for Hailey, mainly), I have made a spinach dip and Becky's buffalo chicken dip and I'm also making Sheryl's crab dip.

I've been reading along, saying I'll come back and post "next time", because there has been so much I wanted to reply to that I wanted to come back and do it right. The last two days I was busy and didn't have time for a "real" reply, and now I've waited so long I can't remember what all I wanted to reply to. :headache:

The day before yesterday, we went to the WWII Museum, and Christmas lights at two different parks around town. We also FINALLY went to Outback! :woohoo: I had the ribeye steak with a loaded baked potato and Caesar salad. :thumbsup2

Last night I just had toast.

Ellen, Gretchen, Glynis, Aimee, and anyone else who needs one: :grouphug:

Becky – you are one lucky lady to have a sister that bakes the way Laura does. Her cookie plate could have been the cover of a magazine! I would kill to spend a weekend with y’all!!!!!:worship:

Marilyn – I, too, have been bored at work this week. Fortunately I’m the boss so we cut out early yesterday and we’re not open today!!!!! Hope the weather doesn’t get too bad, stay safe.

Ann – Hugs for you and little Emma. Your Mexican dinner sounds good to me!

Lauren – Glad to hear you made it to Pittsburgh safely. Good idea to keep the baby in.

Ellen – I’ll keep you in my prayers this evening and tomorrow, I know how tough it is. Please don’t beat yourself up about not being with her. I wasn’t with my Mom either but I think she wanted it that way, she passed within minutes of me leaving her. You know your Mom is with you everyday. Call if you want to talk.

Gretchen – Sounds like y’all have some good eats on tap for tonight, enjoy!!!!!!:thumbsup2

Bethany – So happy you finally made it to Outback and enjoyed it!!!!!

I want to wish each and every one of you a safe and happy New Year and say thanks for being the best family I could ever have. I love y’all!!!!!!!!!!!:grouphug:

WFD – Shrimp cocktail, Prime rib, twice baked potatoes and Caeser salad.:goodvibes

Ellen hugs & love to you.

Lauren, I received your voicemail last night......time for a new phone. SO happy your safe & sound.

Ann, hoping tonight is a better night for your Princess.

Gretchen, love the appetizers. Have a good night.

Bethany, I'm so glad you finally made it to Outback!

Tonight will be lobster & champagne.....home & in pjs.

As many of you I look back on 2009 with some grief & sadness. I pray that 2010 brings peace, love & joy to you my precious friends.

Ellen-

Lots to do today. Going to drive down and meet my sister and get the girls from her. Having a little party with them, DM, my BFF, her DH, her 3 boys and possibly her DM.

Then I have to come back to work, they are going to buy a new van today and won't be able to meet me later, and after that I have to run home and clean all the Christmas stuff out of the living room. Also we are in for more precip later and I don't want to take a chance that it will be the frozen kind although they say it is only supposed to be rain. We were supposed to have rain/sleet/snow earlier and ended up with 3 inches of snow. :sad2:

Hey y'all,

Becky & Laura, How did you two get so much cooking talent in one family??! I couldn't turn out cookies like that to save my life! and Becky those potatoes  that must have taken some patience to do! I pay homage to both of you!:worship:

Ann, I'm sorry your girl is not happy. :sad1:

Maria, I'll be thinking of you tonight and praying that 2010 brings only good things to you & your family.

Gretchen, Yeah I did alright this year for my b-day! ;) I have griped & moaned for so long about getting ripped off for by b-day, that they have finally gotten the hint! and it only took 40 years! ;);)
I hope you like the crabmeat dip!

Aimee, How are you feeling today? I hope a little better. Is the snow all gone over there?

Yay a lazy day for me & the hubby! We might go to a movie, we might not. Tomorrow will be another do nothing day, DD convinced my Mom that we don't need a New Year's Day celebration, only because DD finally told her that she hates her cabbage & black eyed peas so much that she eats before going over there!

I still have prime rib left, so we'll have quite a spread for just us two tonight! I have lots of different cheeses in the house, some harry & david pears with the blue should be yummy. Also still have smoked salmon & I'm stocked up on Champagne & Prosecco!

Quickly popping in to wish all of you a safe and happy new year!

Ellen - Hugs to you; I think Kathy is right. I had been at the hospital with my mom for hours and hours, and not 15 minutes after I left, they called.

Ellen, as Kat already said, you cannot beat yourself up. I believe that people choose when they pass on. My Mom was pretty ill towards the end of her life but seemed to rally when my niece and nephew came by. We knew when Amy was coming in but Timmy got an unexpected trip home and was able to see her. She was so upbeat and well that night. During the night she failed was gone on January 3rd. We all were there but finally sent my brother out for coffee and doughnuts. She passed as soon as he left. My Mom knew that we all were accepting of her wishes but that my brother was really struggling. I look back and wish that we had sent him out earlier, she was not going to go while he was in the house.

My aunt did the same thing. Pat and I were with her but my cousin was at home. She had left a few hours before and once Pat came to sit with me she let herself go. I do nto pretend to understand how these strong willed women make their choices but I do believe that Mothers never stop trying to do what they feel works best for their children, no matter their ages. You are in my thoughts and prayers this weekend, I am joining you in sending my hugs to Heaven. :grouphug::grouphug:

Dinner last night was Friendly's. We took Kady and her BFF to see the Chipmunks movie. Kady made Pa promise not to fall asleep, apparently he fell asleep during Planet 52, started to snore and the people in front of them turned around. There was only about ten people in the theater so Kady was amused but misses no opportunity to tease him.

We are not doing anything tonight. Honestly, I am just not in a Holiday frame this year, do not feel like cooking, do not want to go out. I do want Chinese take out so I think Budddy will pick something up and we will relax in front of the fire and watch TV.

If I miss anyone have a Happy and Safe New Year!

Ellen, thinking of you!

Happy and Healthy New Year to you all. You all mean so much to me, I feel very blessed I found my 2nd home here. XOXO

Happy New Year to everyone from me and also from Laura--she is sitting here next to me.

Dinner tonight is going to be meatballs and sausages, ravioli, penne, antipasto salad, garlic bread, arugula salad, and probably too much wine and champagne! I made a giant meat sandwich for later this evening too. My brother is trying to claim the entire thing for himself...all five pounds of it!

PS: Laura's cookies are yummy!

Back from picking the girls up, have a few things to finish them I am off.

Tonight we are having pizza, chips, dip, some sort of mozzarella thing my BFF got at Costco and whatever else she picks up. Going to watch the ball drop on my DM new 32 Visio. She had extra money and bought herself a gift, telling me she guesses I will be kicking her out of the living room so I can watch football. ::yes::

To all the wonderfull WFD ladies, have a nice New Years Eve and I'll see you next year. ;)

Happy New Year! :wizard:

What a tough few days for you

Well, I saw my GI this morning. He said I'm out of options. Happy Freakin' New Years to me. DH went with me... which was nice, as the GI drew pictures for us on the exam table paper and showed us on the diagram everything he knows is going on. DH never goes to visits with me so he got to hear everything from the GI himself. GI says I need to have the surgery... the drugs aren't going to fix anything at this point and there is too much scar tissue. I can continue with my current lifestyle and sucking down Vicodin - and likely spiral into an obstruction at some point - or have it cut out. The surgery is not a cure; 80% have more disease activity within 2 years but it would buy me 2 years and get rid of the scar tissue. In other words, it would give me a fresh place to start building scar tissue again  He did say I did well to last this long. 80% have surgery within 5 years of diagnosis. I've gone 6. I'd like to go 60

I was tearing up in the exam room but wouldn't give the go ahead. My ins is changing and I have no idea what that means yet. It's not dire so we made an appt for 3 weeks so I can check back in, go over the "plan" again, and I'll know what coverage I will have before saying okay for the surgery consult.

DH thinks I should do it. I feel backed into a corner and am stressed about the money aspect.

The only positive aspect is that I still have time to hurl money into my flex spending for 2010 and the surgery would be done during my "slower" time of year at work.

We are absolute losers and have no plans tonight. All our friends have little kids and if they do anything, it's a kid party more than anything and is honestly not really any fun for adults. I think we're going to use some GCs and have Chili's for dinner and just chill at home.

Happy New Years, Friends

Aimee Loser here too. :rotfl2: We are just going to watch movies and play games trying to stay awake till midnight.

I am making beef and brocolli stirfry. I am too lazy to go out for chinese tonight. Right now it is 16 and getting colder.

Tomorrow we are having our usual new years fried chicken collards and black eyed peas.

Have a safe and fun evening
