The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Glynis, everytime they show Utah and the mountains or the snow on TV Kenny asks if that is where you are from. It sure is beautiful out there.

You can tell Kenny that if they ever show a ski resort in Utah, I live extremely close to them all. We live about 20-40 minutes from every ski resort in northern Utah. I actually live at the base of one of the mountains. I'll try to get some pretty pictures of "my" mountain to post for y'all.

He would love that.

Say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tell them what time dinner is, assign what they bring and tell them this is it! If there is any sassy talk after that tell them you will be glad to join them at whoever invites you first from now on! Period! You let them know that Holidays are not a cakewalk for you and that if they expect you to continue the family tradition they need to cooperate. Don't ask them, tell them.

You go girl, very well said!

You all have made me smile "listening" to your bickering back and forth. It does remind that we are all family. The best kind., We picked one another.

How true.:grouphug:

We are expecting a severe winter storm today. I haven't looked outside, yet, to see if it has hit or not. It's supposed to snow/rain all day today and through the morning tomorrow. I guess it will be a white Christmas for us.

Stay warm and safe my friend.

And as my vent, what kind of mother agrees to leave her young children at Christmas?!? They were 9 and 12 at the time. I would have told that man that if my children couldn't go, then I wouldn't go. Ok, rant over.

I hope you are feeling better today.

I'm glad she did well. It is amazing how well the dogs do after being spayed. I told the vet that if I ever had to have a hysterectomy I was going to have him do it. Especially if I would be up and going so well the next day. ;)

I have a brother I could send you. ;)

I can't believe any mother could do that, how sad.:sad2:
Not feeling better yet, thanks for asking.
You have me :rotfl2: imagining the look on the vets face when you sad that!
I think I'll pass on the brother offer.;)

I am not feeling great, and then mom started to get sick last night :headache:

Oh no! Hoping you both feel better today!

WFD - Chicken parm, pasta, peas and cheesy bread. I'll start my Christmas cooking tomorrow after work.

Morning Y'all,

I'll try to be less grinchish this morning! But all the family talk just sends me into a tail-spin.

Kathy, I hope you're feeling better today!!

Bethany, I like it when your y'all comes out!:rotfl2: I'll have to make you fuss more often!!;)

Glynis, Like you don't have enough to handle!!! Your kids are all so cute I'd cook & clean for them too. That's the problem over here! At 27 DD has lost her cuteness & Chris is not bringing the cute one over here long enough! Enjoy the sing-in! :goodvibes

Gretchen, I hope & pray that the holiday goes well for A & P! :wizard::flower3: I've had you & your Mom on my mind a lot lately. I'm praying for you two, too! How is Mama Karen doing? Is she staying with your brother through Christmas & the New Year?

Laura, You are not a bad friend! You've been on vacation & your hubby is home!!! Please don't worry about a thing here!! Just enjoy the family. :goodvibes

Janice, Yes we have chosen each other & we made some good choices too! :goodvibes

Nancy, I'd like to bring you down here to handle my family!! ;) You might be just what they need!:lmao: They usually do bring a dish. My Aunt has offered (but she doesn't cook!) so I suggested smoked salmon apptz. for her. My SisIL has also offered something, but she is not a great cook unless my brother helps her! :rolleyes1 My brother just told Bob that they can't afford to cook a gumbo & offered salad. If my brother is going without gumbo, money must be really tight for them! Chris isn't coming for dinner, I don't know what my child is doing & my Mom has not offered to cook anything. Which is odd? Don't know what's up with that. It's really going to be all okay. We'll have less food, which will mean easier clean-up! Right?

Aimee, So sorry that you & your Mom are not feeling well on the trip! Take it easy today & feel better!:wizard:

I don't know what's for dinner. We did take-out sushi last night. I need to get going, pick up one last minute gift I forgot, go do the MRI & then hit WF's for supplies.

Y'all have a good one!

Just :sad2: to all this family stuff.
Sheryl, I have to agree that you need to set a time & stick to it. I say that with love.

Kat, I hope your feeling better.

Aimee, hope your Mom is feeling better.

Janice, beautifully said:grouphug:

Well I cooked for 2 days because Greg's family were going to come 12/26 (the 1st time ever!!!!) & as of last night we dropped from 9 people to maybe 2!!!!
I am so upset for Greg & I was looking forward to the distraction to be honest.

Last night we spoke to Cameron's Dad & I did tell him that I am no longer reaching out to him or Cameron. We have paid for the lawyer & the therapist to make everything smoother & she has never reached out to anyone. We did do this as per her request. I have to pull away. My heart is breaking & I just want it to go away at this point.
I'm sorry to post about this again, I know some of you have had enough......

I have to run errands & tonight will be pork chop something....

You have me :rotfl2: imagining the look on the vets face when you sad that!
I think I'll pass on the brother offer.;)

It was pretty funny, actually. He kind of stared at me wide-eyed and slacked jawed while he tried to figure out whether or not I was serious. :rotfl: Silly man.

And the offer for a brother may remain open for quite a while if you change your mind.

Gretchen, I hope & pray that the holiday goes well for A & P! :wizard::flower3: I've had you & your Mom on my mind a lot lately. I'm praying for you two, too! How is Mama Karen doing? Is she staying with your brother through Christmas & the New Year?

My Mom is doing really well, all things considered. She is spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with us. We are going to Kenny's mom's at 3:00 and Mama Karen will go with us. After that, we will come back to my house and watch movies and eat appetizers for dinner. Christmas Day we will hopefully sleep late and have a late lunch at my house with more appetizers Christmas night. Certainly not the Christmases of old, but hopefully enough of a diversion for my Mom. Thanks for asking and for the prayers.

Maria honey we've only had enough of you being jerked around. We always want to be here for you to vent, to cry, or whatever you need. I'm so very sorry. I truly am.

Have I told you how great of a friend you are? Love you.

:goodvibes:hug:

This year I started assigning them all something to bring. And in Donny's case I tell him what this assignment is, determine he is not going to get it right (because he will wait until he is on his way here to take care of his assignment, discover every store is closed and come empty handed but sorry), charge him a set amount and take care of it myself. We'll see how it works this year.

I like your thinking!! I would hate to ever get on your bad side! You have a very feisty side that can come out when need be! :thumbsup2

That would be me. Not so much the waiting until the last minute bit, but clueless at cooking to the point where I wouldn't know what to bring. :headache: Sounds like a New Year's Resolution to me. :rolleyes1

You all have made me smile "listening" to your bickering back and forth. It does remind that we are all family. The best kind., We picked one another.

It is too early to decide dinner yet. Probably will be really simple I need to get my final final grocery list together. Wednesday night they (nasty weather people) are calling for freezing rain.:scared1:

The line I bolded made me smile. :goodvibes:grouphug:

I can relate to the feeling rotten part though. When I can't keep up with the thread, I feel like I'm not pulling my weight with the group. We all have those times though...so I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I just jump right back in and try not to feel guilty about missing 5 or 10 or even 100 pages of chatter. :flower3:

I went to the supermarket yesterday - Super Walmart. I tried to get everything I thought I might need to last until at least Saturday. The hope is to avoid any stores until then. On the morning of the 26th, I'm hoping to go to the store to go buy some decorations and stuff on sale. :rolleyes1

The weather people here said MORE RAIN. Just what I've always wanted! :rotfl: Be careful out there....like I said, I don't DO ice....except in my Coke. ;)

Yep, they're leaving tomorrow morning and won't be back until just before New Year's. Unless their Mom changes her plans. Which we expect because she always does. That alone caused the children more anguish than anything because they would call her to ask her when she was coming home. Her answer every stinking day was "tomorrow". That drug on for four days, which had the kids in a tailspin. So, Kenny and I will miss them, but I'd rather miss them than have a repeat of her last Christmas trip without them.

And as my vent, what kind of mother agrees to leave her young children at Christmas?!? They were 9 and 12 at the time. I would have told that man that if my children couldn't go, then I wouldn't go. Ok, rant over.

 That is crazy. I hope you all have a great Christmas.

:rotfl::lmao: regarding the vet. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to that conversation! Anabelle is doing much better today. Still a little slower and quieter than her normal self (wouldn't take much for that!) but she is noticeably feeling better than yesterday. :thumbsup2 Thanks everybody. :grouphug:

Glynis - we took a family trip to Park City one year. I believe it was a year or so before the Olympics. There was a lot of work going on, but it's such a beautiful area. I don't think I'd want to live there though....too cold! Stay safe and warm in that snow coming your way.

Growing up, our area airport only had a few regional flights on Horizon (the Alaska Airlines regional line) and Delta. Delta would have 4 flights out and 4 flights in a day - ONLY to and from Salt Lake City, one of their regional hubs. From there we could go pretty much anywhere, but it got to the point where Salt Lake City felt like a home airport since we went there anytime we went anywhere.

Bethany - hope Anabelle is feeling better today. I was a nervous wreck when mine were all fixed!

Just checking in quickly. We did MK yesterday most of the day and the crowds were . We only did a few things and mostly just watched the "stuff" that we've never seen because we never come at a busy holiday time. Special characters, little shows, music groups, stage shows at the castle, Tiana's new show, etc. Did see the Hall of President and it was a nice redo there.

I am not feeling great, and then mom started to get sick last night :headache: Magic Kingdom actually extended their hours until midnight last night - just made an announcement inside the park :confused3 - but mom was dragging so we skipped our Ohana reservation for 915 and ate at Captn Cooks a little earlier. Did tour Bay Lake Tower and WOW I want to buy there! :yay:

At least I know I'm not the only one who gets nervous for that kind of stuff!

I'm so sorry you're feeling crummy on your trip. That is no fun. You must have really felt crummy if you skipped an Ohana reservation! :sad2:

My dad is having me run some numbers for a variety of Disney scenarios. At first it was just some WDW numbers, now its the Disney Cruise line AND running some Disneyland numbers. My head is starting to spin, but it's fun number crunching! (Especially since I'm not the one paying! :rolleyes1)

I'll try to be less grinchish this morning! But all the family talk just sends me into a tail-spin.

Bethany, I like it when your y'all comes out!:rotfl2: I'll have to make you fuss more often!!;)

It's okay to vent. And if you DO need help cleaning up, let me know! I'll be home and nobody is coming over. Also, let me know if you need potatoes. :lmao: Walmart had 10lbs for $2 and 1lb was like $1.49 so now we have a 10lb bag of Russets and there's no way we can eat them all! :rotfl:

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: You really don't need to do that. In NYC, you could occasionally hear the word "y'all" but it was almost only used when people were mad at a group. I'd most often hear it on the train, bus, or at work where there were large groups of kids. The NYC use of the word "y'all" sounds like this:

"Y'all are stupid. *suck teeth, move head with attitude and add a wrist snap for emphasis*"

Lucky for you, the word here is used in all forms of conversation. So, I am picking it up in a wider variety of uses. No need to fuss. :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

 Oh, no no no.... I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I am genuinely interested in this, as well as worried about the emotional toll it's taking on you.

And I'm sorry your Christmas plans are also changing. I don't know what is going on with people? :confused3 Making plans to do one thing and then changing at the last minute, AFTER people have already begun following through on the original plans. That is inconsiderate for the host and it hurts feelings.

Howdy ya'll!

My cards finally went out today. From Orlando. From the hotel front desk.:rolleyes1

My presents to my family went out last night with Fedex. May get there in time for Christmas, maybe not. Ehhhh.... not caring- I shipped them.;)

Last night we dropped "stuff" off into a storage unit here in Orlando..... I have stuff in Orlando!:yay: Today we are doing the paperwork for the apartment.

We get on the Wonder tomorrow.... so......... Merry Christmas my friends!!!!!!!:santa:

We are headed over to DHS so I can see Osborne tonight. I love that.

Stay safe and play nice my friends till I get back.:grouphug:

Psst- I have problems keeping up here too, but I'll start feeling guilty after the first... about the same time the guilt comes from breaking that New Years resolution I keep saying I'll quit making.

Bethany- Glad Annabelle is feeling better today. I remember the day my cat came home from getting neutered and he jumped right up on the counter. I figured it served him right since he's not allowed on the counter, but I still cringed a bit. Have fun number crunching!

Gretchen- I'll be thinking of you this Christmas, it's certainly going to be a tough one. My grandmother had already got our Christmas gifts, it's going to be so weird to open them.

Maria- I'm sorry for all your going through. My thoughts are with you, Greg, and Cameron.

Sheryl- I hope your feeling less grinchish by now! I'm sorry things aren't going as planned, but please don't let it ruin your Christmas, it only comes once a year. Our first few Christmas' together really stunk because you felt bad going to one set of parents and not the other set. Now, we all live close together, we all just go to the same house. My parents will go to my inlaws for Christmas, the inlaws go to my parents for Easter, and everyone comes to my house for Thanksgiving. Everyone gets a major holiday and no one is stuck with all the work.

Glynis- I hope Timothy does okay, I'm sure he'll love the music.

Dinner tonight is leftovers. I have more cooking baking to do! Have a great day everyone.

Have a great time on the cruise! Merry Christmas!

Hey now! No one here has "had enough". We LOVE you Maria and hate to see you go through this. I think I can speak for everyone here and say we want you to feel free to post about this subject WHENEVER you need to. That's what this circle of friends is all about.:grouphug:

WFD: I have a hair appt. after work so might not have time to cook but the plan is turkey keilbasa, pierogies, sauerkraut, and applesauce.

Sheryl, I would just stick with your original plan. You made your plans and told your guests about it, you are cooking an expensive piece of meat...I think it is rude that you are being asked to change at this last date.

Lori, have fun on the cruise!!

Aimee, I hope you feel better, and that you can have fun despite the heavy crowds. We saw all the people coming in Friday night, and it was so different from the rest of our trip!

Have a good day all.

I'm sorry to post about this again, I know some of you have had enough.......

It's alright, vent away. Sometimes it is the only thing that saves my sanity.

Not sure what I am having for dinner tonight. I have cookies to bake and bag up. Trying to get out of here early so that I can get some errands run.

And Christmas Day plans are up in the air for a little while longer. The original plan was to go to my sisters in VA but they were calling for bad weather and neither DM and I really want to be that far from home in case we get it. The forcast seems to change all the time so we will make that decision tomorrow.

Say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is a peeve of mine. Somehow it falls on "Mom" to manage the meal, the traditions, the work and keeping the entire family together on any given Holiday. it is a lot of work, expensive and way more time consuming emotionally and physically than we all get credit for, and yet it is an inconvenience for them :confused3

You spoke to my mum didnt you.....I am that adult child !!

But to be fair my contribution WAS hard work and time consuming,I waited in line for 20 mins  to buy the frozen pavlova !!

Oh and I told the boy what you said and he was glad you sided with him, so expect a picture in the mail after new years !! :rolleyes1

Vickie - Have you received my card yet? I apologize if you have already mentioned it, I'm old.;)
