The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Bethany – Anabelle isn’t naughty she’s a dog!!!;) Now for the turkey, if Edi cooked a whole chicken before he can do a turkey!

Janice – Thanks for the advice on the cake soaking up the booze, that’s my girl.:rotfl2:

:rotfl2: About the booze! :lmao:

Umm...the chicken was a lot smaller. It fit in the Crock Pot. :rolleyes1

She IS a dog...she's also a weebit naughty! She has a definite personality...feisty and stubborn! But we love her anyways. :lovestruc She loves to watch tv too...especially the SAINTS!! :rotfl:

I am going to "TRY" to catch up......I will warn you that I am to tired to proof read this so I am sure it is full of mistakes and grammatical errors!

Lauren--I am so sorry to read about your brother. I don't know the whole story, but I know that he is in my prayers as well as you and your whole family. It doesn't sound like an easy situation to swallow. I unfortunately understand a bit about drinking issues with family members, it is so frustrating.
I am glad that things are going somewhat smooth with your mom.

Gretchen--Honey....you do NOT have to explain yourself to us...no excuses...no apologies...just come vent, lean on us and let us give you whatever support we can. We understand.

Glynis--I am glad to hear that the Dr did a full blood workup. My fingers are crossed that the issue is just your iron.

Maria--I am not fully aware of the whole situation you are dealing with, but got the gist of it from posts on here. I am not happy with anyone playing with your heartstrings, I am very defensive of my friends and their feelings.

Stephanie--Your schedule makes mine look like a vacation!!

Bethany--You make me smile:goodvibes Cooking it is a good 1st step:thumbsup2

Ann--I am glad that Ron is liking his job even though it is demanding.

Vickie--I hope you are feeling a bit better this evening.

Sheryl--I hate the gyno appts too!!! :headache:

Marilyn--I hope you finally got your crab legs!! Happy Birthday!

Kat and Ellen--I am sure you are both sleeping better with the babes home safe and sound!

I can't wait to hear how Becky and Laura's trip is going...I am just so happy Greg is with them and can only imagine the excitement the kids are having.

Hmmmmm I know I have missed a bunch....I have you all in my heart and thoughts always, please know that!

I apologize for the cards...my handwriting is awful this year, I have had some issues with arthritis in a finger on my right hand that I broke when I was 5. (a bad break, I am missing part of my finger etc...quite traumatic for 5, lol especially the day before kindergarten starts, lol).
I also apologize for those of you who had the top taped shut...Ross was sealing cards before I had put pictures in them....thanks for the help honey:rolleyes1

-----
The drama story is soooo long, I will try to give a quick version...I had started typing it all out and was shocked at how much there is to it with all the details.

Mil has a brother who bought a mailorder bride 5 yrs ago from Kazakhstan(for real, like from the movie Borat). This uncle is a pompas *** none of the siblings can stand him, but bite their tongues for the parents sake. She has 2 boys he has 1 and they had a baby together. Her oldest is a yr younger then Ross. Ross was passing out gifts to all the kids (he was asked to play santa as he is the oldest) Her son got up and started telling Ross how to do it, Ross said "Yan I know how to pass out gifts" (that is all we all saw it nothing more to it) Well this struck mail order bride the wrong way I guess, cause she pulled mil into bathroom and went off on how Ross walks around like he is better then everyone else, and how he is always mean to Yan, and that she has had enough of how he acts and she is going to confront me about this etc etc. Told mil to not tell me, but she did, but she also told me the she told mail order the she didn't want to be involved in it. (well this didn't set right with me...shouldn't she have stuck up for her grandson?!!?). Mail order was told by her inlaws, (Kris' grandparents) to not do it, she didn't, but she did call her hubby(he had to work) to whine, called 1 aunt into a bedroom and convinced her that Ross is awful etc etc. She then cornered Ross in the hallway, and told him he was "stupid cause he still had a nintendo dsi and not a psp like her kids".
Long story short, we just left. Later then night my mil let me know that, mail order had asked the aunt who had the party to have it on a date that we couldn't be at, cause she didn't want us there! (mil just found out about this then). There was a few more issues with this.
I told mil that we will no longer going to ANY family gatherings. Most of the family is upset (sad) but understand our decision. 1 of Kris' cousins emailed me asking me to not skip the parties that she loves to see Ross and us etc. I thought this was so sweet of her, but said as a parents I can't do that. I compared it to putting my bleeding child into a tank with a hungry shark. Mail order is just waiting for Ross to look at her wrong so she can bite him.
Soooo that in a nutshell is the drama. There is more, mil and I got into as I told her she should have defended Ross then, she agreed with me(shocked). She went to her parents to talk with them and her mother said she is to old to get into this (as she would never say her baby or his wife did anything wrong etc)
I told everyone...that the holidays gatherings are a year away and who knows what might happen, but if there is something in the near future we will not be there.

I hope this all makes sense....well as best it can:confused3
It has just been very draining and very hurtful....we have never done anything to them EVER...and have in fact given them thousands of dollars worth of Ross things over the years to help them out and never once got a thank you.
Ross is the kindest kid I have ever met, honest not just cause I'm his mom. SIGH......

Thank you sooo much for reading and letting me vent this all out! Love you all!! :grouphug:

OH yeah--supper was chicken Alfredo with broccoli, and a yummy salad.

Wendie-

You want I should come up there and run her over with my car? :rolleyes1;)

Lol.....Thanks for the offer, but mail order dresses like a russian hooker so I would be worried one of her stilleto heels would puncture your tire;)

Good Morning!

Quick check in...I hear T rolling around in his crib. He loves to crawl around in there.

My Mom just woke up for the bathroom and told me she went over to the neighbors and used their bathroom before...:scared1:

I have to Riley to the vet and then to the groomer (if the vet allows) and Mom is going home later. The visit went well. It started to get a bit hairy last night but I think I was tired.

Not sure about dinner. We are going to decorate the tree tonight. It is up and lit just needs decorations.

Love to all...BBL!

I am supposed to go to thecity tomorrow and it looks like we will have bad weather... Hopefully it will hold off until the late afternoon.

xxxxx

That's okay, I know how to change a tire! ;)

I feel so puffy today, to much salt the last few days.

:rotfl::rotfl: Oh Marilyn, that is the funniest thing I've heard in a very long time!!! Thank you for the laugh this morning. I REALLY needed it. And Happy Belated Birthday!

:rotfl: Wendie, I don't blame you a bit. In fact, I've made a similar proclamation to my mother regarding my brother. I just told her I am finally at a place in my life where I realize that I don't have to put myself or my children and husband in those kind of situations. And that I'm no longer going to try and make kind excuses when my kids ask why their uncle doesn't remember them at Christmas or on their birthdays when he does remember my sister's kids. I'm just going to tell them that he's being a jerk and it is his problem and not anything to do with them. I've turned the other cheek with him so much I have whiplash and I'm not doing it anymore.

It just hurts so much more when it's your child. So I'm sorry for Ross, but I'm just as sorry for you Wendie.

My Mom just woke up for the bathroom and told me she went over to the neighbors and used their bathroom before...:scared1:

Lauren, forgive me for laughing, but I actually squealed out loud with laughter when I read this. Only because it isn't my mother of course. :rotfl: I am sorry for you, nonetheless. :hippie:

Maria I don't have any words honey. I'm just sick over it and worried about both you and Greg. I'm here if you need me.

Thanks again to all of you for all support. Honestly now it is the drama that has me all stirred up. The only positive thing I can say about it right now is that the stress of the situation has taken the place of my Christmas depression, so in that way, it is making Christmas easier. Of course it is at the expense of my blood pressure, but I guess you can't have everything.

Anyway, last night I made a pork tenderloin with a red wine and blackberry sauce that Kenny thought was delicious. I'll share if anyone is interested. I also was doing a Christmas dessert test run. Now all of you should know I don't really bake much (hardly ever, actually), but the pie was good. It was a maple pecan pie. A little less sweet than normal, but Kenny said he liked it better that way.

I'm thinking of having stir fry tonight but I want to try Robin's runzas some time this weekend. Also, I'm thinking of pinwheels for lunch this weekend. Does anyone have any recipes they like? I've eaten them plenty of times, but never made my own so any advice on spreads to go with particular meats would be welcomed.

Ok, call me lazy or call me blind (or both) but I can't find Robin's runza recipe. Does anyone know where it is?

I just ran (okay drove, as I tell the kiddo "Mom's don't run") to the post office and I think that's it for my outings today, I don't know why I thought it would warm up.

Gretchen- Are they maybe Ellen's runza's? Unless your talking about a different Robin it's not my recipe.

Gretchen and Wendie- I'm sorry your having family trouble. I was just telling my daughter the other day that just because they are family doesn't mean you have to like them, and many times your good friends are much more family than the people actually related to her. We are having some extended family trouble and I'm trying to ease her into what might happen.

Lauren- I'm sorry, but I got a little chuckle too. At least you haven't moved yet so they weren't new neighbors.

Bethany- Turkey's are easy, you can do it. Just stick in the oven until the drumsticks are wiggly. I don't baste it or anything. If you overcook, just use more gravy.

Kathy- We really enjoyed the BLT chicken, we will definatly have that again. Now I have two leeks in the fridge to use up, I'm trying to find a leek and potato soup recipe. It is definatly soup weather here. When I make a lemon tea cake, I always poke holes in it and pour the glaze on while they are still in the pans. That way you don't lose anything and it's easier.

Marilyn- I hope you enjoyed your birthday.

We had baked ziti for dinner last night, so I'm making the meatloaf we were going to have lastnight tonight. Gotta go clean up the kitchen. Have a great day all.

Sorry, I must be having a brain spasm. I thought it was your recipe.

Is this it? http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=34120206&postcount=2615

And I would love the tenderloin recipe Please!!!!

That's it!!!! Thanks. The tenderloin recipe is pretty simple:

Pork Tenderloin with Red wine-blackberry glaze

1-2 lbs pork tenderloin, trimmed
1 – 2 tbl olive oil
dried rosemary
salt
pepper
1 tsp minced garlic
3 shallots, chopped
1 cup red wine
1 tbl chicken base (or powdered chicken stock)
2 tbl blackberry preserves
2 tbl butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Coat tenderloins with some of the olive oil and season with rosemary, salt and pepper. Lightly brown in hot sautee pan on all sides. Once browned, place entire pan in oven for 10-20 minutes, until a meat thermometer shows the roasts have reached 150 degrees.

Remove loins and keep warm. In same sautee pan, add a little more olive oil and sautee garlic and shallots over medium heat until soft. Turn heat to high and add wine. Reduce by about half. Reduce heat back to medium and add chicken base and preserves. After this is combined well, add in butter.

Slice tenderloins and top with sauce.

Next time I would double the sauce. It had plenty of flavor, but I would have liked a little extra.

Bethany – I think the first time I ever cooked a turkey I did it in an oven bag and it’s pretty foolproof. It doesn’t come out as pretty as a roasted turkey but it’s very good and EASY!

Wendie – I cannot believe an adult would tell a child he is stupid. You are so right in your decision to stay away, I’d be fuming. I, too, would ask Marilyn to run her over.

Gretchen – I hope the meeting with your Mom and brother went OK. Hugs to you.

Robin – So glad y’all enjoyed the BLT recipe!:goodvibes

Vickie - It was exciting getting a card from you and loved the Who Dat! How are you feeling today?

WFD - The rain has finally stopped so we're going out for dinner, thinking seafood!

Gretchen – I hope the meeting with your Mom and brother went OK. Hugs to you.

I didn't really go at all. He has refused to meet with her in my presence. For a great many reasons, but especially because I refuse to sit there and allow him to scream at her, or curse at her, etc. :sad2: He is so unlike the person I knew growing up that he is more of a stranger than a relative. He was such a kind person growing up and was always so wonderful to Mom. In some ways, that is what is the hardest on her - him becoming a man who could treat her the way he has, especially since they were always so close.

Sigh. Family. :sad2: Honestly Kat, this is one of the times that I'm jealous of you being an only child.

Gretchen- If the Runza's are good I don't mind taking the credit for them!

I'm planning on making different cookies this year, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Ideally I'm looking foward to cookies that will travel well. I make a huge platter for the guys my husband works with, so they don't need to be fancy.

Since everyone is in a rush this time of year, I saw this "recipe" and thought it looked really good, we are making them this weekend...

I'm going to make them with the pecans instead of the m&m's.

Hey y'all,

Quick checkin, have my dreaded gyno appt today. Hate, hate, hate it! If someone would go for me, I'll take 2 dentist appts with fillings for you?! ;)

Gretchen, I'm sorry about your family:sad1::hug:. Wendie, Sad for you too. Prayers :flower3:

Why is it that holidays means family but it's family that always messes it all up?! :sad2:

Lauren, I apologize I don't know what's going on with your brother. I haven't been able to read back. Just know I'm thinking of you & praying for you!

Kathy, Thanks for posting the rum cake recipe! Bob asked me the other day if any of you had a good recipe for rum cake! I hope I can get to make it for him. I just soo far behind on Christmas prep. He has been doing most of the shopping online, so I think all I have left is my Mom. (hardest gift for me) But there is nary a wrapped gift under the tree.

Kathy, WF's has fresh alaskan dungeness crab on sale this weekend! $8.99 lb. ;)

Maybe I'll be in a better frame a mind after tonight & A's Christmas Play.

I tried to send this e-mail out to those of you that I had an e-mail address on, however, some came back so here it is for all:

Inner peace
I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me today, and we all could probably use more calm in our lives.
Some doctor on the TV this morning said that the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started. So I looked around my house
to see things I'd started and hadn't finished and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of shhhardonay,
a bodle of Baileys, abutle of vocka, a pockage of Pringlies, the res of the Chesescke a n a box a chocolets. Yu haf no idr ow frigin gud I fel. peas sen dis orn to anyy yu fee ar in ned ov inr pece.

Sheryl - Thanks for the heads up on the crab but no time for a trip there before Christmas for me.:upsidedow

Off to do a little shopping and lunch with Kyle!

I'm going to make them with the pecans instead of the m&m's.

I am making a whole bunch of new things myself this year including spice cookies. I will make the usual standbye's of chocolate chip and peanut butter. The one I am most excited about, and I don't know how well they will travel, are diiferant cookie cups. I got the recipes at allrecipes.com.

For one of them you take a roll of chocolate chip cookie dough, mold slices of it into mini muffin tins and bake. When they come out you take a wooden spoon and pat down the dough to make the cup. Take them out and let them cool then add a cream cheese filling.

The other is using a packaged peanut butter cookie recipe, doing the same thing then while still warm you drop in a mini Reeses cup. :cloud9:

I am actually going to try to make them using real batter 1st, I want to see if they will work that way. I might even try the spice cookies and add the cream cheese mixture to them.

I think I mentioned snow last night, we are now going to get up to 12". :scared1:
