The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi Everyone! It has been a busy and tiring weekend for us. Liam finished up ski camp yesterday. He loved it, and he learned so much. He went from non-skier to skiing down the biggest trail and doing jumps! I was kind of glad I wasn't there to see that. I wasn't there because I spent the day in an ice rink with Caili for a skating competition. She skated really well and placed second. She was happy with that. We had lunch at a Japanese/Thai/Malaysian restaurant, which was very good. Caili had a teriyaki beef dish and I had cashew chicken. I don't know where Caili puts all the food. Hers was an adult portion, and she ate almost all of it, and she still had room for fried ice cream topped with whipped cream, hot fudge sauce and a cherry. (Pics will be on FB) Later in the day, her team won, so it was a good way to end the day.

I bet she burns major calories out there!

Kathy - those pics look so delicious.

And those pizzas :lovestruc

Unexpectedly, we had someone bring by a hot meal they just finished cooking for us plus a meal from someone from church this morning. I had chicken, rice, and fresh bread/butter while DH chose some chili and cornbread someone brought by on Friday. After taking a bite, he declared it to all be HIS and that I could have a bite  So, I'm going to email her for the recipe! I've tried lots of chili recipes and never got that kind of reaction from him

Timmy's GF is from Albania and works three jobs and goes to college. She waits tables where we went but is also tending bar. She gives her money to her Mother to help support their family. We really were swept away by her. She tried to buy our dinner! Then she refused to take the tip. I needed to explain to her that Gail and I waited tables and would have kept the tip.

Wow, quite an impressive young lady!:goodvibes

Kat I loved the picture from the Blue Zoo My daughter and I split that appetizer .We loved the Blue Zoo. My brother in law who is in the food business said it was one of his best meals and he's had some good ones. I told him I was going to duplicate it and use mashed potatoes instead of cauliflower and he said "you Irish people , you got to stick a potato into everything" well...yeah...

Blue Zoo and Il Mulino are two of our favorites, we've had outstanding meals there. You Irish people.... too funny!!

Hi Everyone!

Mamu- welcome!

Aimee- congrats on eating pain-free. If you get that chili recipe please make sure you post it.

Kathy- Bluezoo is one of our favorite restaurants in the "world."

Laura- I can't believe Liam learned to ski in a weekend. A big congratulations to Caili

Nancy- I hope Buddy feels better soon.

Wendie- there's a huge mound of snow in a lot not too far from us. I'm pretty sure it will be well into the spring before that melts too. Now I'm planning on tracking just how long.

Gretchen- it must be so hard to see Jessica like that.

Ellen- we are SO ready for spring over here and it really hasn't been that bad this year.

Becky- those pizzas look amazing!

Busy weekend over here. We spent Saturday morning at a swingset store picking one out for Zachy. He had the time of his life on all of the models in there. We customized one we know he'll love. They told us to call once we can see the ground. Optimistically they put March 18th as the installation day but we still have lots of snow on the ground and our yard is surrounded by woods and very shady. Realistically it'll probably be well into April. Mike and I went out with some friends Saturday night. Dinner was at a western-themed BBQ place. I had the bison pot roast. Today we went to Disney on Ice. Zachy had such a good time that I was in tears most of the show. Dinner tonight was salad and a pizza with roasted garlic, tomatoes, chicken, broccoli, and olives on an asiago crust. It looked nothing like Becky's pizzas :lmao:

Eh, not really. Ace has little to no dog skills, which is why he needed a 1 dog home. He does really well with a cat though :confused3 My dogs don't appreciate his poor manners. He's also really whiny which drives DH crazy.

But what sent DH over the edge was when we went to dinner, we crated him in our room so he would be away from my dogs - and gave him a bully stick to chew on. Lucy has managed to let herself in and out of the crate so we have two latches attached to it to keep her contained. My brother latched both. Came home, Ace was still in my room because we shut the door but was NOT in the crate. But the crate was still latched! I swear he's houdini dog. But the worst part was in his attempt to get out of the bedroom, he clawed a huge hole in our berber carpet. DH was thrilled :rolleyes1 So, I'm calling a carpet repair company tomorrow since we have extra carpet and paying whatever it costs to get that patch repaired.

Oh Aimee, I'm so sorry. Kenny actually cringed when I read that to him. I'm glad you have the extra carpet to fix it.

Gretchen – Continued prayers for Jessica. How are her parents holding up? I can’t imagine how hard it must be to see your child like that.:sad1:

I think they're just exhausted. Thankful, but exhausted. I spoke to her Mom at the hospital and Kenny saw her Dad last week. I think they're both still operating on adrenaline.

Gretchen, thanks for pulling for me. I just pulled the beef apart. It is so tender, looking forward to trying it on a sandwich later. It does have a kick just not sure if it is to much.

****update after eating, I liked it. DH on the otherhand said it was ok. If I do it again I wont put the peppers in it was a bit to spicy.****
Freezer space needed for one fussy hard to feed DH.

Well that's better than most of mine turn out. When I use mine, things tend to have not much flavor at all unless that flavor is salt and there always seems to be too much of that. Just about all I'll use mine for is plain Boston Butts. I'll cook them overnight, then shred them in the morning and add BBQ sauce for sandwiches. Other than that, I don't really use it.

Good for both of them. I'm glad that Liam had such a good time and very happy for you that you didn't have to watch. I don't think my nerves could handle it. And congrats to Caili for a job well done! Have you pulled your serger out of the box? ;)

It was actually warm today and is supposed to be in the mid 40's this week. We're starting to see grass although there are still huge piles of snow everywhere.

Ok Marilyn, I hate to tell you, but to us Southern girls, the mid 40's is still dang COLD!!!!! We're supposed to hit the mid 60's tomorrow and I'm thinking that's more like it. Heck, it's only 49 right now.

Bless her heart! No wonder you liked her. How could you not?
I hope Buddy feels better quickly (for both of you). ;)

That sounds like so much fun! One of my favorite memories is of my Dad pushing Hailey in her little swing. She loved her swingset too and it was worth every penny.

Marilyn- so there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel????.

Yep.:thumbsup2

Although there are a lot of people, myself included, who think we are probably going to get another storm or two before Winter is done, just hope they come on the weekends and don't cancel school again. We have no days off until Spring Break the first week of April and have no other days to make them up with. School will end June 23rd and they used two teacher inservice days as make ups.

I know, you thin blooded Southerners! :sad2: ;) 40's for us means no gloves, hats, scarves and just a jacket. When I mean cold, I mean below 30. :thumbsup2

Good morning! Thank goodness our snow storm was a bust. We only got a couple inches of slusy stuff. :woohoo:

Nancy I am sorry to hear Buddy is fighting a cold. I hope he feels better soon. How is his recovery otherwise?

Gretchen Knowledge can be a downer for Jessica. She knows what to expect and if she feels she is not hitting the milestones she will become very depressed. I hope she does well and doesn't expect too much too soon.

Laura Congrats to Caili :cheer2:. She must need the calories after skating or she is growing. I always worry when Alex's appetite picks up.

Tonight is going to be steak tacos rice and a fruit salad

Quick pop in....want to get a few things done around the house from the crazy weekend and then head to the gym!

Supper is cranberry/orange pork tenderloin with rice and haricot verts.
BBL this afternoon......Happy Monday friends!=)

Last year the kids went right up until the last day allowed so this year provisions were made to take days from Spring Break after the built in snow days were used. We have been spared the big storms so I think that the kids are safe. If you all get another doozey is that a solution or is it too late?

Nancy I am sorry to hear Buddy is fighting a cold. I hope he feels better soon. How is his recovery otherwise?

Thanks for asking. He is doing well but has decided that as long as he is home he is going to check all his aches and pains. Now Buddy has led a very physical life and has beaten those old bones up a lot so he has a pretty long list :rotfl: All kidding aside, he is feeling way better but feels guilty for using all of those resourses to "not find anything major". I cannot get him to understand that we are so fortunate to know about the tumors so we can keep an eye on them and that we pay for teh insurance so that we do have those resources. He has never really used the insurance benefits before, just for normal "wear and tear" so this was horrifying to him.

Now the cold is what is going to put him....and me.....over the edge! :dance3:

I told him I was going to duplicate it and use mashed potatoes instead of cauliflower and he said "you Irish people , you got to stick a potato into everything" well...yeah...

Yup................that is what we do. If you can use a potato.....why would you not????????????? What is there not to love about potatoes?

Today we went to Disney on Ice. Zachy had such a good time that I was in tears most of the show. Dinner tonight was salad and a pizza with roasted garlic, tomatoes, chicken, broccoli, and olives on an asiago crust. It looked nothing like Becky's pizzas :lmao:

I am one of the "older gals" with all adult children and I must tell you that I look for these stories because they make me so nostalgic. I can picture your little Zach so vividly becasue I still have the picture of my Daniel and my nephew Brian at a Smurfs on Ice. They were both so mesmerized that my Mom and I spent the entire show watching them. :goodvibes I love that I get to share all these lovely experiences with all of you and that they also bring back happy memories for me.

Timmy's GF was indeed lovely and even Buddy had a hard time telling Gail adn I not to get attached :lmao: He usually takes the step back while she and i jump in with both feet.

I am really going to try to get back on my diet today. Buddy will have the scampi, I am not sure what I will have.

Good morning everyone! I'm expecting a busy day today at work so this may be my only check in. Tonight's dinner is the BLT chicken Kat posted a while back.

Good morning everyone! I am home today....I have had a cold since last Wednesday and decided to see if taking a day off would help kick it out of my system. I always feel guilty taking sick days but I am also sure that my colleagues won't miss my hacking and sneezing.

Aimee, I am sorry about your carpet! Lucky that you have something to patch it with.

Welcome to WFD Mamu! I hope you stick around.

Kathy, nice BlueZoo pics! I want to eat there sometime.

Last night we had turkey and I forgot to take pictures. My Mom cooked which was nice although Laura and I felt kind of weird just standing around doing nothing. We usually cook the Sunday meals. I did make some bagels though...more experimenting with my stand mixer:

That's his chocolate on the right. I found this candy bar in the British section of the supermarket. For some reason, it's labeled as "not being for girls." So of course I had to buy it.

WFD: pasta

Nancy -- Timmy's GF sounds like a keeper. I don't blame you for getting attached quickly. I hope Buddy is feeling better today.

Michelle -- I'm sure Zach will love the swingset. We got a nice one for my two when Caili was two or three and they both still use it. I almost took Caili to Disney on Ice Friday, but I thought we would be too rushed getting out of the show and to her skating session. I always tear up at those shows too.

Oh, and Liam went to a weeklong ski camp, so he had 25 hours of instruction. I am SO happy that he liked it. Ever since he quit gymnastics, I have been wanting to find another activity for him. Skiing will be great, especially next year, because the middle school offers a lot of ski trips.

Gretchen -- I'm glad Jessica's parents are holding up okay. They must be emotionally exhausted too. The serger is still in the box. Maybe I will get it out by the end of the week. I have to spend a couple of days trying to reclaim the house after last week. With all the running around and activity, I barely had time for laundry.

I always worry when Alex's appetite picks up.
 That's usually how I know Liam is growing too. Caili has been growing recently. I took her to get new sneakers last week and her foot was a full size bigger than the last time she was measured.

Marilyn -- I'm glad to hear you are starting to get out from under all the snow. I hope you aren't scheduled to get anything from the storms this week.

I hope we don't get any snow from the storms this week either!

Dinner tonight is leftovers from yesterday.

Gretchen - I hope y'all enjoy the BLT chicken as much as we did!:thumbsup2

Becky - I hope staying home today will allow you to kick that cold for good.

WFD - Red beans & rice with grilled chicken sausages...bbl...

Becky- your bagels look so good! It is hard to believe that this is a first attempt. It is really a good thing that you stay in today, I have found that there are times that it is necessary to just give in to a cold, it is not going anywhere until you do.

I always feel a little odd when someone else makes a meal that I generally do. AS much as i appreciate when someone cooks it is a little odd.

OMG, a Yorkie!!!! That is the best chocolate bar ever!

I have to go to World Market for them and they cost something like $2. I don't care what anyone says, they are for this girl!!!!

Love Vicks xxxx

Hi all! Trying to get caught up (all 6 pages worth!!), so forgive me if I miss someone.

Vickie - Sorry you are having a rough time. and prayers.

Maria - good luck with your surgery today.

Aimee - glad you are enjoying food pain free!

Gretchen - and continued prayers. I imagine her parents will be running on adrenaline for a quite some time.

Laura - congrats to both of your kids. I think I'd be breaking bones in either of those sports!

Nancy - I'm glad you liked Timothy's girlfriend. She sounds like an impressive young lady. I hope Buddy is feeling better.

Oh well, today I am going to clean this house! It is atrocious. I keep it picked up but have not pulled everything out and scrubbed for two weeks. Maybe I'll get the Easter things up but first I need to take the Valentine decorations down.Dinner? Once agin I have no idea!

Two weeks? It's been two months since I've done any real cleaning. I noticed this weekend just how dusty everything is, not to mention the hairballs hiding under the furniture from the dogs :scared1: I definitely need to do spring cleaning.

Freezer space needed for one fussy hard to feed DH.

Send him over to Marilyn or Wendie. They can bury him in one of those snow montains that won't melt until July :rotfl:

Ok Marilyn, I hate to tell you, but to us Southern girls, the mid 40's is still dang COLD!!!!! We're supposed to hit the mid 60's tomorrow and I'm thinking that's more like it. Heck, it's only 49 right now.

How right you are!! We're in the 60's today and I'm SOOOOOO HAPPY!! Actually didn't wear a jacket today, just long sleeves!! But those darn goofy weatherpeople said that Friday we have a chance of flurries :scared1: I'm really tired of these snow threats. We're only supposed to get them every 4-5 years, not 4 times in one year

Kat I loved the picture from the Blue Zoo My daughter and I split that appetizer .We loved the Blue Zoo. Becky those bagels look really good! Hope you are feeling better.

Hey ya'll!

We're headed to St Louis for work.:guilty:

Rick and I are becoming real homebodies. From one extreme to another!:lmao:

Neither one of us wanted to leave yesterday.

We stopped in Biloxi, MS and had dinner at LB's Steakhouse last night...yumm-o! Their app special was fried green tomatoes topped with lump crab meat over a roumelade that was wonderful. Then we both had filets and shared a side of sauteed wild mushrooms.

Tonight is either buffet at the casino close to us in St Louis or Dave and Busters....I think I have Rick talked into D&B on Wed since it's half price game night, but we'll see.

Becky- does the laptop box leak at all? I assume you carry it sideways in a bag. I know I saw yogurt before, just wondered how liquid- proof it was. I'm looking into bento boxes for Rick and I to hopefully help us eat better on the road but everything is so hard to pack into the carry ons- that's our limiting factor- the car rides are easy but it's gotta fly too.

Oh, and how were the bagels? I wish I was that ambitious. I baked Ghiradelli mix brownies over the weekend and you'd think the earth had stopped!:rolleyes1

Hugs to all my girls! BBL
