The What's For Dinner Thread - May '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi all, I took yesterday off from DISing. I was just tired, and not up to it. I can tell the end is getting closer. We did have a nice day and went for a ride and bought some hanging plants for our porch. Dinner ended up being takeout pizza per DH's request :confused3, I was planning on grilled steaks with bearnaise sauce but he wanted pizza. Twist my arm not to cook.;)

I never got to the grocery store because of how I was feeling yesterday. I have to get there today at some point. DH is working his last shift at his part-time job tonight. :cool1: I have to go to a wake for a childhood family friend. She passed away during heart surgery, only 46. It is going to be very hard to see the family.

I have not really caught up but from what I have absorbed I just wanted to make a couple of comments...

Becky, Happy Birthday!!!!

Robin, you will be missed. Good luck getting back into the swing of work. Post when you can, we love having you around.

Sheryl & Kathy, glad you had a nice NOLA meet. I wish we could all get together too.

Nancy, Marisa, and Kady. hope the communion went well. Kady, Congrats on your First Holy Communion!:goodvibes

Gretchen, welcome back. Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Bethany, love the food porn...those fries look yummy!!!

Aimee, hope WW is going well for you.

Maria and Lauren, hope things are going well with you families.

good morning!

The sun is out and no wind today . I am glad it didn't get as cold they were predicting. I really need to get outside and get my garden done.

Ann  I lost a good friend when I was pregnant with Alex. How sad that your friend was taken so young.

Gretchen I am looking forward to being warm. I am sitting here hovering over my coffee trying to get warm. It got down to the low 40's last night. I am glad you all had a great time.

Kathy Maybe next year we can all arrange to meet up :yay: I am paying down my bills this year so no trip for me. I am being a responsible consumer. It is not fun but I need to keep myself in check since I don't have my part time job.

Becky HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Laura Good luck to Caili today

I am off to make breakfast. I haven't made sausage gravy and biscuits in ages I have such a craving for something warm and filling.:upsidedow I may regret it later but for now I will be happy.

Okay...here goes nothing! I went and read back all 18 pages that I missed. :faint: I don't know what I'm going to do when I move and am between internet connections for who knows how long. :scared:

I took a page of notes in an attempt to hit the main things...between the notes and mutli-quotes, I hope I got it all!

DONT DO IT !!!

We did christmas two years ago ( well when I say we I mean Colin cooked and i ran around like a headless chicken ) and it was the most stressful afternoon of my life.

Never been so close to a nervous breakdown .....

LOL about Thanksgiving Dinner...My mom is vegetarian and allergic to seafood/shellfish. I have NO IDEA what to do about both Thanksgiving dinner and about her eating in New Orleans. :confused3 I'm not going to worry about it until about mid-November LOL.

How is "the boy" feeling? I saw he was not well.

Bethany - How are the moving plans going?

They're rolling...we sent in an apartment application on Friday. Now it's back to waiting. We still need to book the truck; we still have the Penske reservation we booked when we were planning to drive down; we need to modify it and also book the freight one. We are also packing. My DH packed up a large portion of the kitchen this week. He left out 2 plates, 2 bowls, and 2 cups, along with some pots and pans and stuff. What he did pack was the stuff we don't use as often.

I can't wait to hear about your Disneyland trip. Did you say you take a big DLR trip/family reunion every year?

All this talk about butchers made me dream about going to a local butcher for getting a job doing insurance claims for them :confused3 What a weird dream they had their aprons on and all this meat was all around I did end up getting the job plus a date :confused3

Hahaha...that sounds like my kinda dream!

I'm coming along but with 2 major surgeries in a row it a long slow boring recovery. It has given me a new awareness for people with disabilities.

It's ok it was a while ago. Just a slow recovery after a back fusion in Nov and a total hip replaced in Mar.
This thread keeps my mind busy reading it and trying to keep up.

 How are you feeling now? That's a lot to deal with. Don't beat yourself up on top of it!

I need to ask for some prayers, if you guys don't mind. My dear friend called last night. Her DIL went into labor the night before Mother's Day. She was 28 weeks pregnant. They tried to stop the labor but couldn't, and little Claire was born in the early hours of Mother's Day. She weighs almost 2 pounds and is breathing on her own, so far. However, many things could go wrong, and they are all worried. Any prayers or good thoughts you could spare would be welcome!

How is she doing now?

I think you are the first person I have ever heard call Boston clean. And yes, there is a lot of Irish blood in Boston. I am glad you had a good time.

Greg is doing well...he is in a Florida swamp right now completing the last phase of Ranger School. If all goes well, he graduates next week.

It WAS clean...at least what I saw of it. We were staying by MIT and so we were mostly in Cambridge, but the Freedom Trail area was pretty clean. My mom was laughing at me because we were walking around Harvard and I said "It smells funny up here....like trees or something."

Glad to hear Greg is doing well. How are you doing with what he does? I'd be a hot mess. And I see now he's going to be jumping out of planes? :scared: The swamp would be scary enough. What is he doing? Wrestling gators?

Now we are going to have to get Bethany to rate our cities cleanliness! ;)

If you're mind is like a sieve, mine must be a colander!

I don't know what a sieve is, but colander sounds like mine lately!

Let's see....Minneapolis was also freakishly clean. The thing that struck me as odd there was that invariably, we got strange directions when we asked the locals for them. They'd go on and on explaining how to get somewhere, then at the end we'd realize the place was across the street and down one block.

Denver...pretty clean. LA....ehhhh not so much. NOLA...it's ok. FQ smells bad though. NYC....:sad2: Absolutely disgusting. My curtains are stained from the air and I've bleached the OUTSIDE of my fridge more than once to get black grime off it. :confused3 And once I saw 2 bloody hand prints smeared across the wall of a train station...they stayed up for at least a week. :scared1:

Laura- Clean isn't the first word I would use to describe boston, but when you compare it to other cities I guess it is. Paris and NY are not the cleanest cities I've been too, but when I was in Germany and Switzerland- they know how to keep a city clean.

Ahhh....Switzerland. :goodvibes That is one of the few cold places that I like.

How is the job going? I saw you went back to work. Also, sorry about having to deal with your inlaws.

Funny thing, she has not had the treat for a birthday before so yesterday she was raving about the "thick thick brownies that Cameron's mom made for his Birthday!" "Nana, they were so thick! And they were shewey! And they were crispy! How did she do that all at once, Nana?" :rotfl2:

Welby told me that her wine store has the juice to make Ice Wine if she wants.

Brownies defy common sense.

I thought ice wine had to do with the grapes freezing on the vine during a frost.

I know Kady will be fine with her weight but I am not used to her being anything but thin. When she was 5 1/2 and diagnosed with food allergies she was only 28 pounds. It is exactly two years later, and she is 54 pounds. She almost doubled her weight. She didnt look like she was a healthy weight before at all. Now she does. Her doctor said she is solid with muscles in her legs because she does gymnastics.

Wow she was really tiny! Every year we have to measure the kids at work for their cumulative records and I think most of the kids are in the 70-100 pound range, although some are much smaller. I think the smallest I had was 36 pounds. These kids are about 6 1/2 though. Glad to hear she is a more healthy weight now.

And congratulations on her First Communion!

just a quick fly by here. Our power has been out all day, making my getting ready a pain. Not fun packing in the heat. Now it's off to the airport!

I hope you're off having a great time! Your comment about packing in the heat reminds me that I should do some work in the hallway here today. It does not have air conditioning (only the bedroom and living room here do), and I think I'm going to quickly run out of cool days!

I remember what I was going to ask- how do I add the vacation countdown to the bottom? I searched the other day with no luck, but I did see Kathy wants to be my friend, sorry that took forever! I'm pretty clueless here.

If you click on any of those tickers, they will take you to a ticker website. You can follow the directions on them (i.e. "pick background", "pick marker", "enter date of event"...) and then at the end it will give you a code (it should be a code that says for 'boards' or 'forums' and I think its an IMG code) to copy and paste into your signature section. (Click on "User CP" on the upper left of any DIS page and then on the left side it will have some links...one is "edit signature".) Hopefully this helps.

Thanks all for the congratulations for DH. I still don't think he can believe he won't have two jobs...it has been almost 15 years.

Vickie, Maria, Aimee & Laura- add me to the list of rotten DIL, well at least in their eyes and they have never even met me. :rotfl: Don't get me started, very long story. It still floors me how stubborn people can be. I just can't imagine ignoring my beautiful DS when you live right next door to him. At least he has one set of sane loveable grandparents who treat him wonderful. Imagine, they do not even know we are expecting again. I could go on and on but I won't.

Congratulations on DH's new job!

That is crazy that they live next door and don't know you're pregnant and you are coming due very quickly! And I am glad to see that your Emma Update was full of good news!

Who asked about Bethany...she has been posting on the NOLA thread. Sounds busy looking for an apartment and packing.

Yes...the NOLA thread moves only about 1/4 as fast as this one; I still was barely able to keep up with it this week. I did want to check in somewhere this week to keep my sanity (or try to....didn't work so well...) and to let people know I was still alive.

Laura, Bethany has been around. Her school has not closed & she is being stressed out on a regular basis just being there. She is just busy.

Thanks for the update...I had three different kinds of headaches this week. Who knew that a headache could cause the INSIDE of your mouth to throb? I had a migraine on Wednesday, a sinus headache on Thursday, and then a mystery-type headache on Friday that mysteriously disappeared within 30 minutes of leaving work.

There are now 6 schools (not mine...*sigh*) closed up here for swine flu. An AP at one school is in critical condition with it. I don't know if the strain is getting more severe or if he has another medical condition. One of my kids went home on Friday at lunch with a temp of 103. The nurse usually sends the sick kids back to class to wait until they are picked up. This time, she sent another student to retrieve his things and he waited in her office.

Alexis is doing better, right? And how are you feeling after the virus, shot, and fall? And when does Angelina hear about the job interview that sounds like it went well? Is it a local job....seems odd they did a phone interview if it's local?

Oh and I had to laugh at you drooling over supermarkets because I was doing the same thing at the supermarkets I was in on the Westbank. Flat floors...wide aisles...fully stocked....smell clean (not like dead mouse)....:rotfl:

He did great! He had his first confrontation with a coach over a call and he seemed to enjoy it, I guess it feels like payback time for him.:rotfl: He's doing a double header on Sunday. I'd love to go watch him but how do I attend a game and cheer for the umpire?:upsidedow

I was going to ask you how the umpiring went...glad to hear it went well. LOL about the enjoying the confrontation!

Okay....
Zipuzee and Weluvdisny - I didn't see you enter the thread, so WELCOME!!

EJ4Disney - How are you holding up? I know you've had a rough stretch.

Aimee - Good luck with the WW; I hope you're feeling better!

FormerCastMbr - How's your mom doing? And did I see A's head is better? That sounds like a nasty hit if the stitches on the ball left marks!

NEVERENOUGHWDW - Sorry to hear about your inlaw issues too. How long is that Transatlantic cruise of yours? It's coming up pretty soon!

Laura - Hoping the recital goes well, good luck to Caili!:thumbsup2

Bethany - We missed you! Thanks for the porn girlfriend!

Ann - It is getting close!!!!!:goodvibes

WFD - We ended up just picking on leftovers last night so I'm going to do yesterday's planned menu today!

Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning!

I am sorry that I do not have time right now to catch up. I hope everyone is well.

Congratulations to Kady! I hope the day was beautiful!!!

Becky,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

We had a nice day yesterday with SisIL and family. We went to a local park looking for birds to photograph (my BILs hobby), got some lunch and went to Andrew's game. He had another great hit and pitch very well. We were kicking butt until he maxed out the pitch count. Then we lost. He got another coupon to the snack shack for doing well.

Ann, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Way too young.

***********
I am making grilled keilbasa, sauerkraut, baked potatoes and salad.

Tomorrow I am joining the gym...I gotta get in gear here.

Have a great day!

Okay....
I posted my Boston photos to Webshots.
http://travel.webshots.com/album/572139838kyjYTd

The people photos I put on Facebook. The ones on Webshots are primarily buildings and food. And one picture of trash.

Food....we had no bad food; we had some plans but ended up just eating where we got hungry. Makes sense, I suppose. :lmao:

I only was able to eat 5 meals in Boston. Two were breakfast at the hotel (Cambridge Marriott) at their MC2 restaurant. They are across the street from MIT, hence the silly name. I had French toast both days but failed to take a photo. :confused3

We were walking the Freedom Trail on Saturday and got hungry after we had crossed the river and were over by the USS Constitution. We ended up at some place called Warren Tavern. It reminded me a lot of Port of Call in NOLA.

For dinner we ate at the Cambridge Brewing Company down the street from the hotel. It happened to be their 20th Anniversary or something; it was packed.

Sunday for lunch we ate at Bertucci's at Harvard Square. We had brick oven pizza. YES, I live in NYC and will still eat pizza outside the five boroughs. But you all know I am not a native to here so maybe that's why? :confused3

On Saturday we walked the Freedom Trail and that basically took the whole day between the walking, looking at stuff, and eating. On Sunday we looked around the campuses of MIT and Harvard. We wanted to go wander around a neighborhood too but we did not have time because we had to be at the train station at 4. We went to the MIT museum...a bit over the top in terms of science stuff LOL but it's free on Sunday mornings. :thumbsup2 The holographs and little machines are cool.

Morning Y'all,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BECKY!!! I HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!!!

Hi everyone! We're back and we had a great time!!! .

Welcome home Gretchen! Glad you had a good time, you deserve it!:goodvibes

We sure did have fun, such an awesome group of women.:goodvibes I SO wish our WFD group could get together.

Oh yes me too! I guess we'll have to be satisfied with our little mini-meet in Oct.! We really should make plans for us all to go at the same time! How nice would that be!

Today was a busy day, as you know. Caili skated well in her competition. It was her first time with the new program and new level, so we were happy with her fourth place (out of six) placement. She was not happy because they only gave out medals for first place and ribbons for everyone else. Liam had a good game tonight. The team lost in the last inning, but Liam had a couple of nice plays.

I had dinner with my parents. We had grilled chicken, potato salad, green beans and a tomato and lettuce salad. Tomorrow everyone is coming here for Caili's dance recitals. We are definitely having halibut, but I don't think the rest of the menu os finalized.

Caili placed very well for the 1st time in the new program! Sorry she didn't get a medal. Glad Liam had a some good plays! Have a nice day with the family!

Here are some food photos from home from this week. One is panini with home baked French fries and the other is chicken with mashed potatoes. :goodvibes

So busy it must have forced you to cook! ;) :thumbsup2

Hi all, I took yesterday off from DISing. I was just tired, and not up to it. I can tell the end is getting closer.

DH is working his last shift at his part-time job tonight. :cool1:

I have to go to a wake for a childhood family friend. She passed away during heart surgery, only 46. It is going to be very hard to see the family.

Take it easy when you can! I'm so glad you're "new normal" is starting tomorrow! :goodvibes

I'm very sorry for your loss, that is especially hard with someone so young.:sad1:

Denver...pretty clean. LA....ehhhh not so much. NOLA...it's ok. FQ smells bad though. NYC....:sad2: Absolutely disgusting. My curtains are stained from the air and I've bleached the OUTSIDE of my fridge more than once to get black grime off it. :confused3 And once I saw 2 bloody hand prints smeared across the wall of a train station...they stayed up for at least a week. :scared1:

Thanks for our City Cleanliness Report! ;) Nola sounds like it's going to be a great improvement over NYC. I don't have to clean grime caused from the air!

Alexis is better! My virus is better, normal sinus issues now. I am feeling good, even with the fall! If it would just last, I'd say pooh on that surgery. But I know better now.

Really you thought the Westbank stores were nice?! Yes they are usually clean & stocked. Just not stocked with all the goodies I like! Thank goodness they don't smell like a dead mouse, I couldn't stomach that!

Glad you had a good day! :thumbsup2 Big kudos on joining a gym, has Kat inspired you? She does look great!:goodvibes

Gotta run if we are gonna make it too church! Sorry if I missed someone! We're going out for brunch after. Have a good Sunday everyone!

ps. Maria thinking & praying for your family. :flower3:

Please...I didn't cook, my DH did. I just took the photos and ate the food. :rotfl2:

Yes, NOLA should be an improvement. I live 1/2 a block from the subway train and I think that's where a lot of the grime issue comes from. I tried bleaching my curtains. After three tries, the water was still coming out black so I gave up.

I went inside both Winn-Dixie on DeGaulle (I think?) and that one was okay. I was looking for those apartment guide books and didn't find one. Cara ended up finding one at Rouse's but I didn't get a chance to peek inside there. I bought coffee at the Walmart Neighborhood Market at Manhattan & Harvey...that was was spotless.

The mice like chips. You have to check the bag to make sure there are no holes in them from the mice.

Bethany, I am officially grossed out about the chips from your stores! Eeeeww!

I like Rouse's on Belle Chasse & I've forgotten about that Walmart! I went in right after it opened & it was really nice, but I haven't been since. I will have to try it again, thanks! Funny getting grocery store tips from a NYC girl!

I forgot to answer your question about Angelina's interview. It was with Ochsner Hospitals, they now own most of the hosps. here. Things are run like a govt. bureaucracy over there.

Did I scare everybody else away? I come back and everybody leaves!

That was the Rouses we went to where we FINALLY found the apartment book things. It was like the 3rd or 4th place we had looked. It's at Lapalco & Belle Chasse or something?

Oh, right...you had mentioned it being with a hospital system in NOLA and I remember thinking "oh probably Ochsner" since they seem to be the only hospitals I've seen in the area aside from Children's. :confused3 I wish her luck.

I did not go get to look at cars. I ended up taking a 5 hour nap. :headache: I am not getting much done lately because I keep falling asleep. I had to lay down because I had this crazy coughing fit; I'm still coughing even after waking up. :headache: This came out of nowhere and my ears hurt too. I hope I'm not getting ANOTHER cold. It's been like one after the other since the beginning of October. :headache:

Marisa & Nancy, I hope you had a beautiful day yesterday. Bless Kady & pass her a hug from me. Hope the weather was beautiful & she must have looked like an angel.

Bethany, Greg & I ate at the Warren Tavern almost every week. Greg was there last week with friends, hope you had there home made chips:thumbsup2
We will be on the QM2 for 6 days & then in London for 4 days. I can't believe how quick it's approaching.
We need to set a date to meet before you go!!!!!

Ann, you need to rest~ listen to your body! That's an order.
Please don't feel bad about not going to the store, I had everything delivered this morning with the exception of meat & fish.....100% lazy but wonderful!

Kat & Sheryl, I loved your pictures, the diaper cake was adorable!!!! I wish we had DIS meets around here:sad2:
I'm going to have to start making day trips to Ann & Nancy.....I will look at that as a benefit of being unemployed.

Sheryl, thank you for the prayers my Mom is having such a rough time & the end of this week e should find out if the antibiotics worked for Leona.
The other day my Mom came home & I knew she had been crying so I went on FB & played the video of your little singer! She loved it & gave us something wonderful to laugh & chat about:hug:

Last night we grilled some chicken & yellow squash.
Tonight we are having turkey burgers with avocado & shaved parmesan.

BBL:)

Bethany - of course you didn't scare anyone away! It's always slow on Sundays here. Could you share DH's recipes with us?

Nan & Marisa - I hope Kady's day was great and hope to see pics soon.:goodvibes

Maria - Your amazing vacation is getting close. I'm so happy for you, you really deserve a relaxing time my friend.

Kyle's schedule is getting more complex every day. Not sure if y'all remember he played with the Louisiana Knights during the summer last year. The coach called him last night and invited him back for the summer. He accepted but did tell coach that his umpiring schedule comes first. He'll only be available to play when it's not a work conflict. He was also asked over the weekend to pitch for the local Dizzy Dean 18-19 year old team. He's SO happy to be able to pitch again, and I love seeing that smile on his face. Sorry, I always seem to ramble on when it comes to my boy.:guilty:

Um, I don't remember chips. :confused3 I think I had a cheeseburger w/ pepper jack cheese and french fries. I was so full afterwards; they have 1/2 pound burgers!

Yes, your trip is coming up fast! We have to meet before it, because your trip is so fantabulously long that I will be on my way out when you are on your way back! Let's get some plans rolling!

I had a feeling that he was going to still be able to play ball. :goodvibes And it's gotta be nice to know he's wanted, unlike at Delgado. I am happy for you and your family. I'll bet your DH is also pleased.

WFD today...I went outside to see if I'd feel any better (didn't work) and got Dunkin Donuts on the way home. We had sausage, egg, and cheese on croissants along with their hashbrowns.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! You all are so sweet.

Well, I also know why most of you don't post dinner photos! I brought my camera for pictures of Liam and Caili, but did not bring the tripod! You REALLY need a tripod for food photos, I guess. Here is my tripod free dinner photo. Panko

Happy Birthday!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Today has been a whirlwind - we hosted another work dinner at our house tonight that went really well. We got home from picking up the dogs around 11pm and though I'm sooooooooo tired, I am determined to watch Desperate Housewives! Dinner was a chicken sopa casserole with salad, chips, quac. Made for 20 people or so.

I'm so sorry guys. I am WAY behind on what's going on around here. I resolved to stay on top of things and I'm failing, but I'm working on it!

That said, Sheryl, you've been on my mind. How are you since your fall?

I made Glynis roast yesterday so that's what we're having for dinner today and tomorrow. I think I will make some biscuits to go with then.

And now a biscuit question:
I lost my buttermilk biscuit recipe and had to google it (it's just a Martha White thing, nothing special, I just haven't memorized the measurements). I came across a "cream biscuit" recipe. It's just flour and heavy cream. I have never heard of this but I was intrigued so I bought some cream to give it a try. Anyone else ever made them this way?

Quick check in...gotta get A off to school and get ready for the gym!!!

Dinner will be pork chops on the grill. I have them sitting in a honey brine now. Sides will be lots of vegetables...probably salad and green beans...and some rice.

Have a great day...BBL - I have a dr. appt with Andrew after school so it will be later.
