The What's for Dinner Thread- June 2012 (recipe index in OP)

Happy Wednesday,

Can you believe that a week from today is Christmas? WOW!!

Nan ~ Thanks for the kind words.
 and prayers are with you my dear friend.

PIO ~ Thanks for your kind words.
The Bilinas are an old German recipe. My Grandmother made them for her 10 children, my Momma made them for us, I made them for my children and I hope now the tradition will continue.
There isn't much to them, but they are oh SO good. It was a way that my Grandmother could feed her kids on just a few pennies. Here is the recipe. We always had them for birthdays and Christmas morning. It was a special treat for us.

Bilians
1/2 cup warm water
1 package yeast
3 cups of flour
pinch of salt
whole milk

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water - I always add a pinch of sugar to help it proof. Set aside.
Put the flour and salt in a large bowl and thin with milk. Add the yeast water and stir well. Cover and let sit overnight in a warm place. In the morning stir down and thin with milk.
Spray your griddle and pour a ladle of mixture on griddle. Take a spoon and spread out real thin. You should have about an 10" - 12" bilina. Cook til golden brown on both sides. It won't take long.
Butter and jelly and roll them up. Enjoy!!
I always double and sometimes triple it. One batch will get about 6 bilinas.

Alison ~ You snuck in on me. Thanks for your kind words. You are so right!
I am so glad you and Fran enjoyed your cruise. You both so deserve some fun right now.

Today is our Operation Santa Claus. There are hundreds of toys just waiting for Moms and Dads to come get. They pick 65 families each year to pick out toys for their children. Then there are wrappers that wrap everything, and even stocking stuffers. This is my favorite day of the year. To see the faces of Moms and Dads knowing that there will be something under the tree is priceless. Of course I am a blubbering idiot. I just get so emotional watching it all. Believe you me I am not the only one shedding a few tears. ;)

WFDT ~ Chicken pot pie and a green salad.

Make it a great day all!!

Good morning,

I don't know about all of you but I am in count down mode here. I started out so good and was ahead of schedule and now I am scrambling to get things done.

Brandi ~ Morning to you also my friend. I hope you are back in the post vacation routine. I always hate to see a vacation end but can't wait to get back into the groove of things at home and work. I guess that is how I get over the blues of seeing a great vacation over.

PIO ~ You are more than welcome. Let me know what you think of them.

I finally got my Christmas cards done last night. and I mailed them this morning. That is one more thing I can cross off of my list. I have laundry to do tonight and I HAVE to get started on wrapping the Christmas presents. I always wrap at my kitchen table and the washer and dryer are close so I hope to get both done - well at least started. ;)

Doug is going shopping tonight, so I will be home all by myself. I think he is going right after work so I can get started as soon as I get home at 4. I will be able to get quite a bit finished.

WFDT ~ Leftovers ~ there is some beef and noodles, and I will fix a nice salad.

Make it a great day all!!

Ellen,

I guess for me, the post vacation blues fix was booking another one!

We will be in the Caribbean for 10 days in Feb... I just keep looking forward to that!

:)

I am back in the groove, but I don't like it..

Ellen, I'm glad you're getting it all together. I have no countdown. The only thing we are doingfor Christmas is cooking a Prime Rib. I do have a small present for Fran. I need ti wrap it.

Tonight we are having Dungeness crab with salad and garlic toast for dinner.

ellen- that Operation Santa sounds wonderful! We have something similar to that but I really do not know the inside scoop. There are hundreds of items on or Church tree, and we choose as many as we want, buy it and bring it back. We also have special food drive for holiday meals. Our communittee outreach committee does all the work.
Your Blinis sound like crepes but different. YUM!

I should have a countdown but I do not. This year I am totally out of sorts and falling way behind.

How is Fran feeling lately?

This is what David got me, but he has not seen it yet....

YAY!

PIO- How did I miss those fabulous photos?!?!?!?!?!?! I have to say the 80's thing was odd, but the food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lovely!

I went on my interview yesterday, but have no idea how it went. I left with the feeling that they (I had three people interview me) may need to go with someone who is not a full time student. Oh well, we will see!

Dinner is a chicken cheesy casserole. I have got to start cooking again! Buddy is starting the fire now, and I think I will sink on the sofa and enjoy it.

Fire (with someone else starting it) and sofa sounds like heaven right now!

Enjoy

I'm officially on 2 weeks break now. :cool1:

Sadly, DH signed us up for a detox. We started on Sunday last week. Who signs us up for a detox just before Christmas???? More importantly which idiotic spouse agrees to it???? :rotfl2:

I should be done by Saturday.

To add insult to injury, I've got a summer cold. It was over 100 F yesterday and I was shivering in bed. :faint:

Pass the Cosmo.

PIO- Funny thing is David has not seen the gift he is giving me yet.... That what he gets for letting me pick it out!

He still has to wrap it.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Brandi. Feeling a lot better today but still stuffed up in the nose and head.
