The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

Ladies, I am back for some prayers. Timmy is leaving for Iraq in the morning and I would appreciate it if you send some prayers for him. I knew he was leaving soon, bu tit still it unexpected somehow. I know I said I never thought that I would be thanking God for Iraq, he was originally supposed to go to Afghanistan, but I am scared for him. :sad1: He drives one of those MRAP's so he is on the road.

:grouphug: Prayers for him and all his loved ones!:grouphug: It is such a difficult time for those involved. I remember my DB leaving for the Persian Gulf when I was in college, it was an awful time for everyone.

WFD- DM made baked scrod with creamed peas, baked potatoes, and acorn squash. It tasted delicious at the time, but isn't settling well now.

Tomorrow, Caili and I are helping to stimulate the economy by buying new skates and visiting the American Girl store. Liam is getting his haircut. Tomorrow night, Beck, BIL and I are increasing the stimulus package by going to a movie and going out to eat. Sunday, Caili is testing out her new skates and then going to a birthday party.

What good citizens!!!;)

He's a sandwich short of a picnic.....
His elevator doesn't go all the way to the top. His river doesn't run all the way to the sea.
My personal favorite from the movie The Green Mile, "I think the cheese done slid off his cracker"

Y'all are killing me.....:rotfl:

I will send prayers with him. My BIL is there right now, due to come home and things have quieted down a bit since he arrived last year. I hope that he comes home safe and sound and sooner rather than later.

I made shrimpcakes tonight and they were awful... but lesson learned and I did learn how to make some mean hush puppies.

We do an Easter brunch and dinner: Dinner is always the same thing... ham, green beans, mac and cheese, rolls.... but I am thinking of changing things up this year and do a Pork Roast, greens, rice, and cornbread... we didn't do much of that over winter and I just realized that Spring is here.

Hey Ya'll, I don't know if mentioned it here, I know I did on the NOLA thread. DD is hosting a Twilight DVD Party tomorrow night. Friends & family that are all into the book ( all girls of course ). We're doing themed food, I'm in charge of Bloody Mary's, Sangria & a salad that I'll try to make as red as possible. We are having pizza (because DD said Edward ate pizza in the movie?) and she is making all kinds of kooky vampire desserts. I'm excited it should be fun.

How fun! I'd never even heard of the Twilight series until it started showing up as flair on FB  Doesn't sound like my kind of book series but we'll rent the movie from Redbox.

Gosh - I just clicked on and saw all the well wishes and kind thoughts about our doggie, Chewie. Thank you guys so much, you're the best. :grouphug: I'm sorry for everyone else who recently went thru this, too. It's very very hard.

*sniff*

So today is the first day of spring....it SNOWED. They were not even predicting it. It said "cloudy" for today's forecast. NOTHING about snow. See if I believe The Weather Channel anymore...

Seriously?!? Easter is not for three weeks! I don't even know if I'll be home or not.

I can't believe you're getting snow! It's very warm here, course another cold front could come through again but I don't think we saw snow at all this year? :confused3

Re: Easter - my life revolves around the church calendar; I've been working on Easter (well, Lent) since last fall  I actually invited my dad and brother to come over that weekend, go to church (they are heathens who only go when they come visit us), and have lunch at our house so I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a good menu since my life is NUTS the week before Easter.

Few fries short of a happy meal...

Not the sharpest tool in the shed...

Not the brightest crayon the box...

Just heard from Wendie, she's very scared and nervous as her dad has been in surgery for over 4 hours. She wanted me to thank y'all for the prayers and I assured her we would continue until we hear further from her.:guilty:

We ended up at Pei Wei tonight - had pad thai and potstickers. Yum!

I got a new hairdo! :cool1: Chopped 6 inches off into a razored bob with bangs - I haven't had bangs since high school! I really like it.

Stoooooooopid question alert:

I was thinking of doing beef instead of ham for Easter. We all LOVE steak. Costco has beef tenderloin (choice) for $6.49 a pound - so it's about $30 for a package of it. That's the same as filet mignon, right? Just not cut up? It's also been so expensive that I've never bought it but that price seems pretty good to me. What do most people do with it?

I'll keep BIL in my prayers as well.

Can't wait to see it, I have bangs now too, first time in a VERY long time!:thumbsup2

As to the beef tenderloin, yes, it's a filet not cut up...I've never prepared one so I can't help with that part.

Is Pei Wei like PF Changs?(I love that place).....

Wendie's Dad is out of surgery, not out of the woods yet, will update tomorrow.

We typically have ham on Easter, but I might be out of town so who knows what I'll end up with.

You took the ones I know! I could tell my kids did not know what to think of him...some of them had the funniest expressions on their faces. I needed my camera. :lmao:

As for the snow...it was not expected. When I first went outside I was like "what the HECK?!? SNOW?!?!" Then I said to myself: "Self, ENJOY THIS. You don't know when you will see snow again." It was those big fat flakes, and they tickled my face and got caught in my eyelashes. :goodvibes :cutie:

I had to think "what are hush puppies" but then I think I remembered - fried corn bread or something like that? How do you make them?

So I had these ambitious plans to get a lot done tonight. TOTALLY did not happen. LOL

I'll have to post pics on FB - once I have some makeup on

Pei Wei is the same company as PFChangs (many of the same menu items, like their famous lettuce wraps) but in a cheaper setting. You order at a counter before being seated but they bring the food to you and refill your stuff. We :lovestruc it.

Thanks for the update on Wendie's dad.

Oh, maybe I'm lucky we don't have one here, I'd be a loyal customer....:rolleyes1

It is their "fast food" restaurant.

Glad he's out, hope everything is okay.

I haven't posted the recipe. I found it on the Food Network site. I was watching her show "Paula Deen's best recipes" and it was on a show she did with her brother. I'll see if I can find the link. I think it's something like, "Mama's No-Fail Pound Cake" or something like that.

Thanks :)

Yes same as filets. You can roast it and serve an espagnoel sauce with it. http://www.emerils.com/recipe/847/Espagnole-Sauce. the sauce is very much worth the effort it has a wonderful taste. You can freeze any remaining in small batches for any time you need a great gravy.

Today Alex is going to a Pokemon tournament. So he will be busy :woohoo:

I get to go to Whole foods in piece and quiet:yay: I need to get some more grains from there.

We ordered Twilight from Direct tv for tonight so we are watching that while we eat dinner. I am not sure what that will be yet:confused3

Kathy If you talk with Wendie let her know I am thinking of her and praying for guidance for her.

Morning ladies. I just don't think I can do a puppy again. All the whining and chewing and peeing! At least the pooch is cute and DS is in heaven playing with him. I think we're headed out for dinner tonight. We didn't get to have Friday night after soccer pizza b/c of church small group, so I think we'll head out for pizza tonight.

Laura--have fun stimulating the economy. That's what I called DD's birthday trip to American Girl Chicago. Apparently, we didn't spend quite enough to save the whole country;)

Wendie--more prayers coming your way. Glad to hear that your dad made it through surgery

Nan--will be sending prayers your way as well

Aimmee-maybe we'll hit PeiWei today. I wanted to go to the mall anyway, so maybe we'll go there for lunch. Yum, yum!

Okay, need to get moving. Have a great weekend all!

Good Morning!

Quick check in...baby is stirring...

Prayers for your BIL as well...

Aimee, Not sure what we are doing for Easter. We usually do ham, keilbasa, turkey and all the fixings if we are with my family. I have done a tenderloin roast in the past on the grill. That sauce that Janice posted sounds really, really good. Can't wait to see your hair pics.

*************
Not sure about dinner tonight. Lat night was spaghetti in alfredo sauce with chicken and peas. Salad and biscuits on the side.

Have a great day all! Hope to be back later...

Tonight we are heading out of town to a birthday party for a friend. They are grilling burgers and hot dogs.

Care to share the recipe for the hush puppies?

Sure: Hush Puppies
2 cups of corn meal or plain bread crumbs (I used plain bread crumbs as a substitute, and it worked surprisingly well
1 cup of flower
2 eggs
splash of buttermilk
cajun seasoning to taste (I prefer Slap your Mama, and a lot of it, but any will do)
a pinch of salt
1 tsp baking powder
2/3 tsp baking soda

mix and fry until they float....

WFD: grilled chicken, grilled summer squash in garlic butter, and wild rice

Thank you all for your prayers for Timmy. I appreciate them so much.

Kat- thank you for letting us know how Wendie is, I was afraid to PM her, I am feeling blue and was afraid I would just make things worse instead of better for her. My love and prayers are with her though :grouphug:

Portocall- thank you for updating us on Iraq. i had heard that things were better but appreciate that your BIL is more up to date on the situation. I will share this with Gail. I will also include your BIl in my prayers.

Ladies- I LOL over the fries short of....etc

If I comment on Gails wall photos on FB will you be able to see them? She has pics of my handsome nephew there.
