The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

Holy hot mama, Nancy!!!! Just saw the wedding pictures. You look amazing!!! Buddy is one hottie, too! What a perfect couple you make!!! Tell Buddy that it's nice to have a fact to place with all the stories! And Kady and Marisa looked amazing, too! I can definitely see why Kady can wrap Buddy around his finger. She's just a living doll!!!

Good morning all.
Lauren- How exciting! You should even be home for A's birthday then, though I think he'd understand if you aren't.

Glynis- Sorry about more snow, I just keep thinking in just over a month the crocus will popping out. Just hopeful thinking. I love when they start selling the bunches of daffidils in the store.

Sheryl- I love sandwiches, that one looks fun and messy to eat.

Ann- I really love that zoo. I went to Johnson and Wales and when my husband would come up to visit, we'd have lunch in the park. I'm not a city person, I wasn't even in Providence I was in Warwick, so it was a nice "getaway." Now my daughter loves the zoo, I think mostly because we get a dell's lemondade there.

I'm a recovering magazine addict. Now I just get Martha Stewert Everyday food, my favorite, and I just signed up for Cooking Light, it was to good of a deal to pass up. All the other magazines were just the same recipes over and over. You should see my giant 3 ring binder of magazine recipes I'm going to try one day. Good thing I'm young because I'll need a lot of years to go through all of them.

Don't know what's for dinner tonight. Last night we had shredded chicken with bbq sauce, cheddar cheese on english muffins. They were really good. The cheese was from Washington State University Creamery that my brother gave me two years ago. You get a can of cheese, ours was chedder, and you can age it as long as you like. It's made by the students, and boy was it good. I'm going to order more and try to age it longer than 2 years, but it's a long wait. Our anniversary is coming up and I'm going to make the cheddar cheese soup from Canada in Epcot with it. Can't wait.

Done rambling for now, have a good day all.

Oh dear. Magazines are a weakness of mine. I get, um....lots. Here is the current list:

gourmet, bon appetit, cooking light, fine cooking, food and wine, the new yorker, vanity fair, and entertainment weekly. John gets some magazines also that I don't read: Widescreen Review, Star Wars Insider (!!), and Patriots Football Weekly.

I'm cutting back though! Over the past year I gave up Saveur, La Cucina Italiana, Cooks Illustrated, Martha Stewart Living, Everyday Food, Vegetarian Times, and The New York Review of Books.

I think I am making black bean soup and quesadillas for dinner tonight.

Sheryl, nice pictures! John would love that sandwich.

Here is the antipasto from Saturday:

More coming soon.

First of all...i feel like i should be subsribing to more magazines!! I only have one subscription currently, Entertainment Weekly..and i read my mom's Star magazines as well ;) I do buy WW when it comes out..if i had my way i would have about 3 more cooking subscriptions..but alas, with all the wedding mags littering my house this year..i think i have to wait! ;)

Becky...is there a recipe for the black bean soup you are making tonight..i LOVE black beans!! :)

WFD: Turkey parmesean meatloaf ( ww recipe)..string beans.

As you can see from Becky's list of magazine subscriptions, I don't need to get any myself. However, I may be breeding future magazine addicts. The kids get: National Geographic Kids, National Geographic, Ask, Muse, Ranger Rick, Your Big Backyard, Sports Illustrated Kids and Highlights.

Ann -- Luke is the perfect age for the zoo. We used to live pretty close to the Franklin Park Zoo, and one year, I bought a family membership. Any nice day that I couldn't think of anything else to do, I would drive over to the zoo and spend an hour (or however long the kids wanted) there. It was great.

I ended up making tomato soup for dinner last night. Tonight Caili skates, so I am sort of leaning toward take-out.

You all are making me laugh with your magazine confessions. I walk quickly past the magazine section in the stores. I have been known to spend big money on magazines ($30-40) I get currently Real simple, better homes and garden, Cuisine, Familyfun, Cooking light, Taste of Home and Southern living (yes I know I am not southern :confused3 )

Alex gets Ninetendo power and Natural geographic

I have no magazine subscriptions currently, my addiction is cookbooks. Between my mother and I we have enough to fill on entire bookcase and half of another. And then there are all of the recipes I have that are cut out of or copied from magazines, printed off the internet or have written down over the years.

Dinner tonight will be salmon, cous cous and some sort of veggie.

Good afternoon - things here are nutso, we've having "issues" again at work and I'm try to censor my opinions. It's hard :rolleyes1

I will grab whatever tonight for dinner here at work. DH is having the leftover sausage/zucchini rice which he LOVED.

Kat, Do you think you're going to have "Creolelatize" Rachel's meatloaves? ;)

Kat, Would it be too much to ask to have food porn links on the 1st page? I always find myself looking for pics of Becky or Laura's food, trying to figure out just what they did? If it's too hard don't worry about it.

Actually Rachel's Dad is from Louisiana so she usually does Creole fairly well, this recipe doesn't look like it will need tweaking, we'll see.....

Never thought of indexing the porn, GEE, wonder where you got that bright idea from.......Ms. Bendy:laughing: . I'll work on it this weekend, shouldn't be a problem at all!

The shrimp were so darn good, you'd have thought we were doing something other than eating there was so much moaning going on.:rotfl2:

Aimee, I'm sorry you're having troubles at work again.

I am just cracking up over all of us! Well I see we all have our "issues"! Becky obviously wins the most magazine addicted award & the cookbook one has to go to Marilyn!

Marilyn, I do love my cookbooks too. With recent remodeling going on here, I have thinned that out quite a bit. Now I just pile up magazines. :scared:

Laura, I think you are too late to stop your children's magazine
addiction! :goodvibes TG for Becky passes her mags to you.

Becky, :worship: That pomodoro looks amazing! Star Wars Insider! I would not have ever guessed that one!

My DH has a few of his own, Car&Driver, Racer & Auto Week. Kind of easy to tell what he's into!

Robin, That po-boy was messy. Exactly the way it should be! Forget the napkins, just get out the paper towels. ;)

Kat, Well I found myself hunting for a pic of Becky's bok choy this morning. I'm always looking at her pics for ideas. So the linked food porn would be helpful! I like RR's recipes but I do find I have to spice them up a lot! DH has always liked it spicy. :lmao:

I had big plans for dinner. But I gave into another addiction today, online shopping. Although I didn't buy a thing, just wasted the day looking at dishes! Rimmed soup plates to be specific. I realized my new set only has deep round bowls, which I like, but of course I need shallow bowls too. Right?:rolleyes1

We now have food porn links in the OP! I had some free time this afternoon, maybe over the weekend I can go through the last thread and do them.:goodvibes

Sheryl- "issues" I love it! Very clever.

We are planning an addition in the next year or two (always coming closer to the "or two") and one of my big concerns is the built-ins in my kitchen. They will go to open up the kitchen into the living room and added counter space, but where will all my cookbooks go? My collection is getting a little out of hand, but I blame it on my mother, she always finds a new cookbook I need.

Hi Ladies! This is the WFD version of True Confessions :rotfl::rotfl: I used to buy cookbooks, subscribed to a Cookbook club, got cooking mags and then bought more on a whim. I never used the recipes......because you know....I have a recipe thing.....so I looked at the pictures, checked out the ingredients, skimmed the recipe...and then you all know what I did :lmao:

So, I am a recovering cookbook/magazine addict:rolleyes1

Thanks for all of the compliments! We do try to clean up but you can see the degeneration from the beginning of the day to the end as I was saving those poor wone bottles from being tossed ;) Kady does make us smile though. Debbie is my sister's DD and my Godchild and also has Buddy totally captivated, Donny and Dan and Erica were in there as well. Dawn is my Donny's GF.

We had a huge lunch so Marisa is picking up a $5 pizza at Domino's for Buddy. He is taking a nap right now, it was a stressful day. His sister told us she was diagnosed with bone cancer. This is not out of the realm of probability, his Dad and one of his Aunts had bone cancer and most of his father's siblings had cancers that were not managable. She was wearing a rain coat that was torn, it is winter! and told me it was all she had :sad1:. I honestly don;t know what I am going to do, I have to think about it, she is not usually honest but we cannot let this go on.

Aimee-

Glynis- how do you do it?????

Sheryl- I am drooloing over that Po Boy! I am not going to show Buddy...I will never hear the end of it!

Becky- How do you keep your stovetop looking like that? All teh cooking you do and it is pristine!

WEll it is snowing here and Buddy got up to put more wood ont eh fire so I'll check back later.

Afternoon ladies. WFD tonight is gonna be lasagna. Pretty much only b/c I know there will be leftovers, and DH is in charge of dinner tomorrow night. Got to make it as easy as possible or the kids might starve (or gasp, eat more fast food!) My mom normally would be in charge of dinner on Thursday but my sister's final divorce hearing is tomorrow and my mom is a witness to xbil's crazy behaviour. Praying for discernment for the judge. And that her hearing actually takes place--it's been rescheduled 4 times now, my sis is at the end of her rope.

Sheryl--I actually drink a lot of diet coke and coke zero. You just go to the coke rewards website and set up an account. Then there are codes on 20oun. bottles, 2 liters, 12 packs and cases of coke products. I would never save enough points for the big prizes, so I use them all on magazines. And I also have the on-line shopping addiction. Amazon knows me well!

Nancy--what is this about pictures?????

I think I mentioned here that we've had two people out to do estimates on our foundation work. Well, we had a 3rd guy out today and he told me that if it was his house he would just wait and see what happens in 6 months. That there isn't anything structurally wrong with the house and he wouldn't spend money just to spend money. Very interesting. Now I"m really confused--we've had estimates over $8K and now someone telling us we don't need to do anything right now:confused3

Hi All!

I have to confess, I just buy my mags at the grocery check out...I did have a thing for cookbooks but now with the internet, I just get recipes online and from youse ;) guys.

Nancy, I loved seeing the pics of the wedding. You looked beautiful as did Marisa, Kady, the bride and everyone else...it was great putting faces to the names. It really looked like a fun wedding. I am sorry the day was stressful and my prayers go out to Buddy's sister.

I have not been able to keep up lately but just wanted to check in. I went to the perinatalogist today and it turns out I do have preclampsia but not a severe case so that is good. I have to closely monitor my BP twice a day and if I continue to have high #s, they may have to induce sooner...I just checked it again and it was OK so maybe its just from rushing around or what they call White Coat Syndrome (when your BP goes up because of a dr visit).

So, now I am on what she called partial bed rest...basically the same thing as my OB said...no vacuuming, no heavy lifting or exertion...

I am really looking forward to relaxing a bit tomorrow...I have no where to be. I will do a few things and then rest the remainder of the day.

I hope all is well with everyone...

Becky- How do you keep your stovetop looking like that? All teh cooking you do and it is pristine!

Umm...it is NOT pristine! The pizza stone is covering all of the ooky parts! :rotfl:

I am in the running for crazy cookbook queen also. I have hundreds of cookbooks! I have two floor to ceiling bookcases full--one filled with the books I am using at the moment, and the other has cookbooks I am not liking/using right now, plus the ones that are "just for looking," like Charlie Trotter's cookbooks.

Here is Monday's dinner. Summer rolls:

3289642411_aed5bccf98.jpg

I also made satay with peanut sauce, coconut rice, and bok choy (I've been into bok choy lately!). Here is the beef satay:

And the chicken satay:

I'll post the black bean soup recipe with the picture tomorrow. It's really easy but I don't recall the exact ingredient amounts. It's been a while since I have made it.

Lauren, I'm sorry that you have the pre-eclampsia! Don't you just want to tell those doctors, that if you didn't have so many freaking dr appts you could get some rest! You are really handling all of this so well! Keep up the good work & remember no housework.

Robin, We took out a built-in bookcase, so a lot of books had to go. I tried giving them to family, but most ended going to Goodwill. :sad1:

Stephanie, That stinks! That just makes it so hard to know what to do! We don't drink a lot of coke, but it is the soft drink we choose. Thanks I'll go check it out. I do have 2 flat 2 ltrs sitting on the counter now & a 12 pack in the fridge! (Nancy's pics are on her FB)

You win! :rotfl2:

That is the prettiest summer rolls EVER!!! You have to tell me how you do that! So beautiful! And I don't have to go looking for bok choy pics now either!

But what's this about a pristine stove! I must have missed that while drooling over the food!

You know you are in my prayers, please rest and will you be up to a phone call on Friday? I'll PM you first and see if you're up to it.
