The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

I always use club soda in waffles, especially when I'm using whole wheat, it makes them lighter & fluffier.

I like this tip, thanks!!

Tonight we'll be vegging in front of the TV with American Idol. I think I am just making sausage and pepper subs.

We had sausage and peppers subs over the weekend, and they really hit the spot!! I am looking forward to the singing part of AI starting tonight!

Tried to sleep when I first got home but I had two cups of coffee at work and was too wired. Finally fell asleep at about 6. :sad2:

Story of my life! I have issues sleeping. Did you try Benadryl? It's my miracle drug... I can't leave home without it!

who knows where we will rest our heads in March:lmao: !!!!!!

My wonderful DH could not resist an AKL poolview room that opened up today on the 7 for 4 deal. So we have changed from CSR to AKL, I must admit I am super excited :cool1: !!! We have never stayed there.

DH is so excited to take my DS on their morning walks together to find animals. He is very into giraffes right now because of the Madagascar movie.

This is change number three to this trip for those of you counting :rotfl: ...we started with POR, to CSR, to AKL.

Ann

:cool1: We have not stayed there but were going to in Nov before DH lost his job and we had to cancel the nice hotel. I'm sure you will love it!

I think I just read in a magazine that doing this with pancakes is also better - I don't have a waffle iron but make pancakes a lot.

Tonight DH has class and I am taking dinner to a family that just had a new baby. As much as I'd love to cook something, I just am not going to have time (they eat early) so I am going to stop and get a family meal at someplace like Johnny Carino's.

We talked last night about whether I should cook something tonight but he said he needs to eat before class or he'll staaaaaaaaarve (yeah right) so we're both just getting our own food out.

Story of my life! I have issues sleeping. Did you try Benadryl? It's my miracle drug... I can't leave home without it!

Only occasionally do I have problems, yesterdays was caffiene induced. And that's a negative on the Benadryl, I would probably be even more wired. Nyquil makes me restless so I try not to use that stuff near bedtime.

Dinner tonight will be the spaghetti and meatballs. I am in such a winter funk, I have been eating really badly lately and also letting my DM cook too much.

Quick run through this afternoon. Work has had me swamped the past couple of days. But I did want to try to at least respond to some of you.

Maria - I've been praying for you ever since that first post and will continue to do so.

Nancy - My condolences to your family on your loss.

Becky - Great pics! Now I'm craving fish.

Ann - I think it's great your husband is that interested in the trip. And I think AKL is a great choice. We haven't stayed there, but we went to Jiko for dinner once and I thought the hotel was just amazing. We can't stay there due to their anti-balloon policy (Hailey LOVES :lovestruc: balloons), but I've been meaning to take the kids just for a visit.

Lauren - :dance3: A date. Woo hoo!

Janice - If you go back to Target for that mirror, pick me up a dozen or so. ;)

Sheryl - I made Kenny the roast beef po boys this weekend and he was over the moon. Thanks for the tips.

Kathy - How is baseball going?

Last night's dinner was a turkey breast, garden peas and mashed potatoes with gravy. Tonight I'm making a hash brown quiche and grits.

I did not know about this, but it makes sense. Get that princess of yours whatever she wants!!princess: I am a bit disappointed, Luke loved his balloon on our last trip...oh well!

Ann

I think I am going to take DS and go to my parents in a bit. He refuses to nap...where do they get the energy from?!?!?!?

Ann, I have always said that if I could bottle my children's energy, I would be a millionaire.

You will love AKL...unless something else turns up!

Maria -- We're all here when you're ready to talk.

Nancy -- I'm thinking of you and Buddy today.

Sheryl -- That's a good tip with the club soda. I am going to have to try that.

Dinner last night ended up being eggs and bacon and eggless waffles for Liam. I ate the pizza for lunch. Tonight I am thinking about making some kind of Asian noodle bowl, but I haven't quite decided. I picked up some food at WF, but I was  at some of the prices, so I didn't get everything I needed. Sheryl, I know you shop at WF pretty regularly. Did their prices go up...a lot?? WF has never been a cheap shopping trip, but I paid $6 for a loaf of bread! :sad2:

Oh, and I was going to have a turkey breast like Gretchen sometime this week, but that was $25!! And it was small! Okay, rant over.

Aimee, I know what magazine you were reading! ;) I was reading the RR mag earlier. I had to laugh out loud when I saw the pancake tip.

Gretchen, I'm glad Kenny like the po-boys! :goodvibes

So if you're child comes back to AK with a balloon, what do they do? Take it from the kid? That could be a very bad scene. :scared: Not that I don't understand, they must inform guests upon check in. I guess it would be a much worse scene if a animal suffocated from swallowing a balloon.

Laura, I have found some of WF's prices have jumped lately. Especially the fresh baked breads & I don't know why. I've only been buying the frozen Ezekiel breads & whatever mini loaf that's 99 cents that day. Pickup up a couple of mini loaves comes out cheaper than buying one large. (It's usually the french boule or the rustic italian loaf that's 99 cents.) It bums me out, because the other stores around here just don't make great breads. I also noticed the chicken prices were ridiculous last week. I've been wanting to roast a chicken & fix your pot pie for Bob. I have found that if I'm careful to buy what's on sale & look for the 365 brand I do a lot better. But to go in there feeling like I want to cook a certain thing just blows the budget.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: I have been waiting for the change, I remember your last trip and your DH's resort hopping even before you got there :rotfl2:

Don't change again, AKL is a really fun resort for children and a romantic resort for adults. There is an event board that will let you know the day's activities such as storytelling for the family and a tour of Jiko and Boma's kitchens. There is an art tour, AKL has the largest collection of African art outside of Africa. The pool is zero entry so it is safe and convenient for kids.

Pack a nice bottle of wine (and cider for you) and enjoy it on the balcony while your little guy dreams of girafffes.

Morning Y'all,

We had a nice evening last night with DD & SIL sleeping over. But this morning though really tugged at my heartstrings. Chris comes in at 5:30 & slips Alexis in bed. So this morning she put her in bed with my DD. (SonIL Josh was already up.) So when I go in there to wake up Alexis for school, there's my DD asleep in old bed with Alexis. Nice but why do they have to grow up? :sad1:

That is what we said. One minute they are little and the next they are grown. It's funny, one day I was telling Buddy to rip down the wall between Marisa's room and the living room before it was too late and the next he is telling me we need to add on :lmao::lmao: Every time Welby says she is waiting for Nola's next "step" he freaks out and tells her to stop stop stop! She is not even ours and we are trying to keep her little....we know what you do....:sad1:

Ann - I thi We can't stay there due to their anti-balloon policy (Hailey LOVES :lovestruc: balloons), but I've been meaning to take the kids just for a visit.

Buddy spent over a week trying to bring balloons back to AKL. For a man who says he never forgets anything he sure had some kind of memory block with this rule :rotfl:

I agree that if Hailey loves ballons then AKL will not work but there are so many viewing places that this resort is a fun place to spend a few hours.

Well, we have a little reprieve this afternoon. Buddy's sister said she is not "ready" to attend the wake this afternoon. She will be ready tomorrow morning. We need to leave very early to get through trafffic to get her but I think she will change her mind. She is a little afraid of him when he gets stern, she knows he will lose it if she is on anything and steps foot in our car. She gets overly emotional and has been calling his cousins, several times at the hospital, crying and asking questions that make no sense. They are annoyed, he is upset because it hurts him to hear about it and I am staying out of the family dynamics, but he will have a hard time with her I think. They were not up to editing what they shared in front of him and knowing that they spoke the trruth does not take the hurt away.

Thank you again for all the prayers, they make this much easier :grouphug:

Hey everyone!!! :)
Its been awhile since i have dipped my toe in here..aka..been lazy and sick and have not cooked much!!
I love all the pictures..becky..seriously...that is MY kind of vacation!!!!

WFD tonight: Chicken fajitas ( last night was turkey burgers)

Hi all, just a quick check in.
Ann- I had to comment on the giraffes. My daughter loves them, she now has over 30 giraffe stuffed animals. Then there are the towels, light, garbage can, cup, plates... The list goes on. Anyway, I don't know if you have been to the Roger Williams Zoo lately. We went last spring and the giraffe exhibit has been redone a bit. There feeding stations are right on the edge of the path, so you are about 3 feet away from them. If I knew how to post pictures I would. I assume if your in Rhode Island, you can't be that far!

Don't know what's for dinner, see you all around.

Hi, everyone! It's snowing again, here. I'm so tired of winter!!! Why can't we just jump straight from Christmas to spring???

Nancy - I made your cabbage roll casserole last night, and it got :thumbsup2 from everyone in our family except my pickiest eater! Even my Mary who is anti-meat right now, ate 3 helpings! It is amazing, and I will definitely be adding it to my rotation.

Dinner tonight will be chicken tetrazinni. Yum!

Quick update:

I went for my BPP, NST and Dr visit today and have been scheduled for an induction for 3/7! :cool1: My BP was also high so he is doing another test for pre-enclampsia (sp) and I have an appointment with the perinatalogist tomorrow...

I was also told no vacuuming, strenuous chores and heavy lifting...I hope Tom feels like cleaning!!!

Lindsay- I am blaming Lori for the Rosa. I think I remember she started the downward spiral........you know the Rosa and the Chocolate Shell???????? If is was not her, well I am not above blaming someone who is working and cannot defend herself....so it was Lori. My story and I'm sticking to it.

I think you are right, it was Lori!:rotfl:

I am keeping Buddy in my prayers.

Kathy - How is baseball going?

We were rained out last weekend and now we're in a Mardi Gras break. Next game is 2/27.

Let Tom do everything, just rest until 3/7.......:yay: :dance3: :dance3: :woohoo: :cool1:

Lauren, Rest yourself Cher!:goodvibes Tom can handle everything.

Glynis, Sorry you're sick of the cold! I agree that casserole of Nancy's was yummy.

Becky, I wanted to thank you, but you were basking in the sun. I used a tip you gave me quite a while back. Clam juice instead of seafood stock in a shrimp sauce. Worked great! :thumbsup2

I honestly couldn't remember what magazine it was in I read so many

I think they will store balloons for you at the desk if you come in with one. I could be wrong. :confused3

Lauren Sorry your BP is up but :yay: for no housework. Remember a healthy bean is what your after. That almost rhymes.

Glynis I am with you on this cold stuff. We are supposed to get some snow tonight or tomarrrow and again this weekend.:sad2:

Tonight is leftovers.

They got rid of the giraffes at the National Zoo. I have some really great pictures of an elephant that was taunting the giraffe one year. The giraffe totally ignored him. :rotfl:

Yeah, make him clean. Cause if not I'm sure you will and you do not need to be doing that!

Yeah I think I've become a magazineaholic! I have 5 subscriptions for myself. I have a really hard time not buying more while standing in line at the grocery.

Alan told me I had to cancel my subscriptions to the cooking magazines that I love, until I have tried all the recipes I've torn out of the magazines. Once I've done that, I can have my subscriptions back. Guess I'll just have to rely on y'all.

The only magazine I'm subscribed to now is Family Fun. It's where I get a lot of my ideas for stuff to do with my kids.
