The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

Okay, I am hear for happy prayers! My niece Amy was admitted last night and is in labor. She has waited a lifetime for this baby, it is two weeks early but her BP was very high so she has been induced. We do not know if it is a boy or girl, they did not want to know, but please remember her today if you would. My brother and sister in law have a flight out tomorrow morning.

Prayers said for a healthy mommy and baby!

I made fried corn and mashed potatoes and gravy to go with the roast.

:eek:I'm watching Survivor and the dude was nude!

how do you make your fried corn?

how do you make your fried corn?

This is the first time I have made it. I just put a little olive oil in the frying pan, added frozen corn, salt and pepper and cooked it until it was a little browned. It was really good!

Just quickly checking in. My MIL was admitted to the hospital yesterday because her hemoglobin was so low they couldn't figure out how she was walking. They gave her 4 pints of blood and were going to keep her overnight.

My FIL called us before 5 this morning and said she has been diagnosed with leukemia. They are going to transfer her to Vanderbuilt sometime today. We are in the process of getting ready and going to the hospital. She is currently in ICU.

 I'm so sorry...

I've flown with an ear infection - NOT a pleasant exp. Hope you can get something fixed up soon!

NO, it's NOT. The pressure was building up in my head so bad that I had pain shooting down my neck into my shoulder. I was pulling on my ears and trying not to scream from when the time announced the "initial descent" until we landed. It took a few days for my ears to finally "pop" and the pain to fully subside. :scared:

We seem to be in between snow squalls right now. It was near white out conditions earlier. Alan called to tell me that the satellite news truck that his station uses was doing a story up one of the canyons, and slid off an embankment. If there hadn't been a guard rail, the driver would probably have been killed. As it was, the rail slowed the fall, and Dave was able to walk away with only bumps and bruises. Alan had to pick him up at the hospital. Hopefully, things won't get worse, but we are supposed to have snow for the rest of the day.

SNOW? That is sick. I agree with the others - Dave had somebody looking out for him today! Stuff like that is why I HATE driving in the snow.

Sheryl - Great news on the iphone! :cool1:

Somebody else posted they couldn't tell if it was fall or spring...I just said the same thing earlier this week! :lmao:

So I got home about 6:30, at dinner, and fell asleep just before 7. Now I'm up trying to get a few papers taken care of so I can go back to sleep - I just got up at 11:30. :sad2:

Quick update on Dr. visit. He said my ear looked fine. I could be just sleeping on it wrong, since that is usually the side I sleep on. I am still getting a cracking in my ear occasionally but it could be I wrenched my jaw or something sleeping. Good news at least I do not have to worry about flying with an earache.

He did do my baby exam while I was there too. My BP was 120/73 and since getting pregnant I have gained 3 lbs. I am now 27 weeks and just began my 7th month. The baby's heartbeat was 135 which was her lowest yet but she could have been resting. So all was well...two more days till I am waddling around WDW.

I missed alot yesterday, and have only caught up on the last page. Stephanie, Kris was great! Nancy good luck to your DN, what an exciting time for everyone.

Ann

I'm making Parmesan pork chops, baked potatoes, and a green veggie for dinner tonight.

Some updates:
MIL is now in a room. She was in ICU until after 9 last night. They did a bone marrow biopsy and will have the results hopefully tomorrow. They will know better what they are dealing with then. They aren't sending her to Vanderbuilt now. While it's a MUCH better place for her to be, it's 3 hours away and I know they'd rather be closer to home.

I am going to go see her today. She was in good spirits when we saw her yesterday. It's so funny, you guys. I was doing really good yesterday until I went to church last night (choir practice). The news had been circulating through the church so when we did prayer requests I told everyone what was going on. I opened my mouth and just went into a thousand pieces. It's so strange. I think my subconscience knows I'm going ot be hugged soon and that I will fall apart then, so why not get it over with, lol.

Thanks for all of your prayers and well wishes. We appreciate them.

Ann - You've only gained 3 lbs????? SO glad you don't have an ear infection.

Lindsay - Continued prayers for you and your family.

WFD - Chicken Sausalito, rice and corn.

Good Morning!

Nancy, Any baby news??? :goodvibes

Ann, So glad that you do not have an ear infection and that all is going well with the pregnancy. 3#s??? I must have gained all of your weight! :rotfl: Have a great vacation, relax and enjoy! I have used ear planes and I would take them with you to use. My ears cannot take landing and these things really work.

Lindsay, Continued prayers!

I will be making the dinner that I did not make yesterday. Sausage, peppers and onions over pasta with italian bread and salad. I found a jar of trader joe's bruscetta (sp) in the closet and I am going to use that to make the sauce for the pasta. Can't wait!

Andrew has bb practice tonight if it does not rain. He seems to be doing a bit better...he was hitting the ball into the outfield on Tues...the coach was pitching.

Have a great day all!

Ann, ... 3#s??? I must have gained all of your weight! :rotfl:

3lbs sooooooooooo far! I know it is going to creep up in the end, that is what happened with DS. Besides I am bigger than most to begin with. With both pregnancies my weight has been maintained in the beginning because of so much morning sickness. With DS I was actually down a pound from my starting weight after I delivered, I wouldn't mind if that happened again.
If not Kathy will be my weight loss inspiration! It is all worth it in the long run no matter what happens weight wise.

Lindsay, prayers to your family at this hard time.

Morning everyone!

Ann- See what good friends we all are, we gained all the weight so you don't have to. When I was pregnant, I didn't really gain much weight until the last month or so. I was in college and people in my class didn't know. A couple weeks after she was born, I was back to a size 6. I don't know what happened (actually I do, I got lazy) because I'm far from a 6 now.

There is a position I really want at work, but alot of people really want it so it's not a given. Anyway, it starts a month earlier that my regular job so I better get moving if I have any plans of fitting into my work clothes. I'm working on my application for it today, wish me luck. Even if I don't get it, at least I love the job I have there.

Lindsay- I was the same way when my husband was in the hospital. I could hold it together okay, but when I went to school to pick up my daughter and she also had a little concert while he was in the hospital, people would ask how he was doing and everything I worked so hard to hold in would come out. Even if she isn't at the "better" place I'm sure they work together. Instead of sending my husband to Boston, they discussed what to do with surgeons there- you get to stay near home, but the doctors still can work together.

Becky- Have you posted the recipe for the chicken, it looks like something even the critics in my house would like.

Last night for dinner we ended up having french toast, egg rolls, and strawberry shakes. Yes, I was desparate.

Tonight we are having turkey, mashed potatoes, and a veg. It's our late night so I'm going to cook the turkey this morning and everyone can deal with heating it up.

Good Morning!

Ann- 3 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW! I'm glad to hear that you do not have an infection

Lindsay- continued prayers for your MIL. As others have said, you hold it together until you know that you do not need to.

No baby yet. My DSIL will call her Mom from Chicago and they will update us if she has delivered. I called at 6 this morning and my brother could barely contain himself. This little one is really a miracle baby :cloud9:

Dinner will be turkey hot dogs and something. For some reason Kady has been asking for them after months of saying she does not eat them. She and Buddy will be happy, I'm not sure I want them though.

Robin, good luck with the job!pixiedust: Lots of luck coming your way!

I have never in my life seen a size 6. I don't think one of my thighs could fit in a size 6:rotfl:. I know it is going to come as the baby grows rapidly these last months. But any excess my dare WFD friends are willing to take for the cause would be appreciated!:lmao: Just hoping to keep my total gain between 15-20lbs.

Good Morning!

Ann- 3 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW! I'm glad to hear that you do not have an infection
.

Thanks :goodvibes...it maybe only three pounds but boy does my body look like it is more. Amazing how the body can change and mold during pregnancy.

Can wait to hear about the new baby, keep us posted.

Okay, all you American Idol watchers...did you think Adam looked like Chris Isaac last night or was it just me? What a transformation in his appearance.

Ann

Ann--yes, he did look a bit like Chris Issac. DD says "Mommy they gave him a haircut!":rotfl2: I'm not a huge Adam fan, but he did really good last night too. DH also said that Scott (the blind guy) could do a mean impersonation of the guy from "Greatest American Hero". Congrats on only gaining 3lbs. I didn't gain any weight early in my pregnancy with DS--unfortunately somehow 40lbs creeped up on me at the end :rolleyes1

Lindsay--continued prayers going out to your MIL

Tonight will be Glynis pot roast with fingerling potatoes and baby carrots. Got it in the crockpot already. I thought I would help my mom out with dinner tonight.

Time to hit the gym for the first time this week. Have a great Thursday all!

Ann - I'm so glad that you don't have an ear infection. Congrats on all looking well with the pregnancy. Just remember not to overdo it at WDW. Listen to your body. I had to give up some sightseeing in London because my poor pregnant body just couldn't handle all the walking. So, watch for signs that you need to take a rest.

Nancy - Continued prayers for your niece! I love miracle babies!!!!!

Lindsay - I know this is hard for you! You are in my prayers! I'm like you. Fine when I'm by myself, but when I know I'm about to be surrounded by sympathy, I fall to pieces. Nothing wrong with that! Just let people love you!

Dinner tonight will be Poor man's stroganoff with green beans and brown rice instead of noodles. With our weather, we need some comfort food!

Timothy started rice cereal last night! The kids were so excited that he got to sit in the high chair and have "dinner" with the family. We got some cute pictures that I'll try to get posted for you. He actually did quite well with it. It seemed like he enjoyed the taste, but couldn't really figure out what to do with his tongue. I'm sure with just a bit of practice, he'll be a champ at this "real people" eating thing! He ate all that I mixed up and didn't spit any of it up. And the best part????? He slept from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. without waking up once!!!! I nursed him at 4:30 and he fell asleep again and he's still down (it's 7:45 now). Maybe that extra fiber is helping!!! We'll see. Jacob hopes so, because as soon as he sleeps through the night, he gets to move into Jacob's room. I don't know why he's so excited about that, but there you are!

Make it a great day, everyone!

Yeah Timothy! I was one of those Moms that gave A a little cereal in the bottle. He was a big eater. Glynis, I have to admit, I am having a hard time nursing...I am doing both that and formula. Thomas is already up to 4 - 5 ounces every 3 hours and I cannot keep up...:confused3 Do you think that is OK? I have been pumping so I know how much he is getting...I should think its OK since he is still getting some of the benefits from nursing.

Sorry if that is TMI...I am just confused.

Timothy has been nursing and getting formula since he was about 1 week old. I am just a good milk producer. I nurse as much as I can, but there are times when he's just not getting anything from me. I talked to my doctor about it, and we both agreed that some women just don't make enough to feed their babies. It's been that way for me with all the kids. It is PERFECTLY FINE to supplement your nursing with formula! Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you are inferior for doing that. The important this is that Thomas is growing and is healthy! You are accomplishing that!

When Katie was born, I was determined to only nurse her. We did fine until we got home from the hospital, and then she wanted to nurse all the time. We did that, but she lost weight dramatically. She was 7 pounds 14 oz. when she was born and at one week was down to almost 5 pounds. She was literally starving to death! Once we got her on formula, she did just fine. I would nurse during the day, but at around 5:00, we would begin bottles.

That's what we are doing with Timothy, as well. He's doing just fine, as is Thomas! The important thing is that he's growing. You are doing everything right!!!

Thanks for the advice. I DH does not think I am a whiner!!!
What a big boy, already time for cereal...awesome. That should mean more sleep for mommy!!!
