The What's for Dinner Thread - August 2014 (recipe index in OP)

Before I got sick I had a ham and a turkey on the dinner menu. By the time they thawed I was well into the sick. So I persevered and made the ham Friday and the Turkey last night. With MY stuffing and green bean casserole and Fran made plenty of gravy. And the turkey was cooked to perfection. Even when I was sick as a dog, I was able to make up for what I didnt get at Thanksgiving!

Tonight we are seeing a play starring Angela Lansbury so we'll grab something on our way to the show.

Ellen - I hope you got all your Christmas shopping done.

PIO - hang in there with all those family events.

Brandi - welcome back!

Kim - I think I'm all up to date on your TR.

WFDT? Grilled chicken breast, spare ribs, garlic cauliflower with brussel sprouts, and white corn....

Monday night here and I'm planning on burgers for dinner.

My arms are so sore today. Yesterday, we went to a place that offered tree surfing. The kids loved it! 3 of the adults went tree surfing. 2 of the adults stayed on the ground. I really need to build up some upper body strength!

I'm probably going make the trifle, the fruit kebabs and the strawberry tower for Christmas eve. I'm starting to stress about food preparation/shopping and that's not good. It's meant to be fun, right?
I made a pre-packaged gingerbread house today and I think that will be something I will take on Christmas Eve as well.

I might do the pavlova for Christmas day instead.

Yes, it's supposed to be fun. My Dad threw a curve at me. With our Prime Rib we always have what we all refer to as "Roberta Potatoes" because our cousin/aunt Roberta introduced us to them, however, we had them at my sister's over Thanksgiving and they work so well that I've made them almost every time we have Prime Rib. I proposed Scalloped Potatoes and my Dad threw back Latkes. Gelson's down the street is a pretty Jewish style deli and I picked up a couple last week to try and they were good. They told me that they would have them through the 23rd, the end of Hannukah. Well I went today and yesterday was the last day they were serving them.

What????????? :confused3

My Dad had said Frozen ones would be fine, so I bought a box. Now Fran wants me to make them from scratch, plus she wants to go see "Into the Woods" on Christmas Day. Well how am I going to cook a roast, make Latkes from scratch and see a movie all in one day without getting stressed out?

Yours sounds like a bigger deal than mine since you have such a big family, but for four of us, can't we just use something from the freezer? :faint:

They arrive tomorrow and the house is a mess. I'm going to rely on Darcy to remedy that. I'm still feeling somewhat sick.

Alison - Cooking Christmas would throw me in a loop....and you're going to see Into the Woods as well????? Maybe you could suggest seeing it on Boxing Day instead. If not, serve the frozen Latkes. Did you ask if Gelson would make you a batch?

Hope Darcy works her magic!

last night for dinner I had sweet potato and roasted broccoli, David added a pork chop to his

Alison, that is just too much to do in one day, I say go for frozen or move the movie to another day.

PIO- Tree surfing sounds amazing...

The thing is that Into The Woods opens on the 25th. We have plan at Disneyland on the 26th and my parents return hone on the 27th. I was all set for scalloped potatoes because I could make thise the day before. Tomorrow and the next day will be pretty chill. Our only plans are to go out for dinner tomorrow, and Wednesday we're going to have Dungeness Crab for dinner. I do have a turkey and a ham to slice and freeze tomorrow.

We'll have to take a look at the movie schedule and see how it works with dinner. At least we aren't spending any time on presents, we forgoed that with my parents this year.

Tonight is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and steamed zucchini.

HI all, happy day before Christmas Eve!!

I was so busy yesterday that I didn't know if I was coming or going. I tried several times to get in here and finally just gave up.'

PIO ~ Tree surfing - I have never heard of it - looks like fun.

Brandi ~ Welcome home. I bet you have enough memories to last a lifetime. You visited some of my very favorite places. Would love to sit and listen to your stories.

Kimmar ~ I am proud of you and I am thoroughly enjoying your trip report.

Alison ~ Oh sweetie, I hope you are feeling better. There is nothing worse than being sick at Christmas.
I know your parents are there and I hope you are enjoying them.
What have you decided about the scalloped potatoes? Since you would be the one cooking, I would say you can decide the menu. At least that is what I do - if they don't like it then they can cook next year. Not to be mean, but really this is your Christmas too, you don't feel good and I hate to see you stressing. Just enjoy!!

Well I can honestly say I am ready (was Saturday) - TOTALLY. Now all I have to do is sit back and enjoy!! Matthew will be home tomorrow. We will go to Elizabeth and Jay's for an early dinner then head to church. Jay and Elizabeth and the boys are lighting the Advent candle and Doug, I and Matthew are helping to serve communion. Then back to their house for presents. Marty, Stephanie and Lilly are going to his Dad's and family for Christmas Eve. We will all be together for Christmas dinner at Elizabeth's. Bless her heart she is doing both this year. But she is loving it!!

WFDT ~ Meatloaf, baked potatoes and roasted brussel sprouts.

Make it a great day all.

I don't mind the dilemma with the potatoes, it's not so much that it's MY house and I'm cooking since whoever doesn't host has to travel we are all somewhat put out. Fran is the one who is insisting on homemade latkes, I have a box in the freezer. ;)

I've told her that she is the point person on them and she will need to do most of the work and supervise. If not out come the frozen ones! We'll see how that goes. Her arthritis drug is working somewhat and she is doing a lot better than a week or two ago.

Tonight we went out to dinner to one of my favorite Fish restaurants. Everyone but Fran had raw oysters (they're bad for her depressed immune system and I think she doesn't like the skirmy suckers). I had mahi mahi with mac and cheese and spinach, my dad had grilled yellowtail with mac and cheese and wok'd veggies. Mom had yellowtail sashimi with a salad and Fran had a Tempura Crunchy roll. We brought along a couple bottles of wine and the waitress didn't even charge us a corkage fee! :cool1:

Tomorrow night we're having lobster (cooked and cleaned by the local grocery store) along with Caesar Salad and Garlic toast. Another easy night! The cold seems to be lifting slowly, and I had more of an appetite tonight than I have in days. I just hope by the night we eat Prime Rib, I'm back in business!

Happy Holidays to all, and enjoy your festivities!

Ellen - congrats on having everything done.
Alison - So happy to hear you are feeling better

We had Christmas done before we left on the trip, except the presents for his mom and my dad, we were picking those up in Germany.

Well I had my Dad's shipped from Germany, it is a beautiful handmade nutcracker. to me it was the one that you always think it should like, a solider in a beautiful dress uniform. I wished I had a photo of it.

David's mom wanted a tea cup, well we could only find Russian tea cup, now they were gorgeous, and fragile and beautiful and all that, but they were not German, so we keep looking and then the vacation was over. So we came home without one.

We looked on the internet and no German tea cups that are pretty, we found plenty that were everyday use, but not the kind you display. So Amazon helped me find a pretty tea cup from Russia that ended up being sent to here for Christmas.

So David and I gave each other the trip, so we are not exchanging gifts this year. We decided since it was just us at home that there was no reason to really cook anything so we are just doing normal dinner. even thought I keep toying with making lasagna (vegetarian) .

Merry Christmas Eve

Merry Christmas Eve!!

I am so excited for tonight. As Doug and I were having our coffee this morning we were saying how it is so neat as things change. When you are little you can't wait to see what is in the presents and what Santa will bring. Now as we are older I am just as excited to have everyone open their presents from us and enjoy their excitement.

May you all feel the excitement of the season. And don't forget the "Reason for the Season"

May God Bless you all my dear friends!!

David and I are all alone this year, so no package openings for us to view, but I do agree it is much better to give than to receive.

We will get to talk to everyone later in the day and hopefully the kids will still be playing with everything.

Ellen - YAY for getting everything done and ready. That's a great feeling. Tree surfing was a lot of fun. I need to get the pictures off DH's camera and post some.

Alison - Hope that you have a stress-free day. And I wanna know what you thought of Into the Wood. I love some of Sondheim music and that's one that I love. I really want to go see it.

Brandi - That teacup sounds beautiful. I hope she loves it. Did you make the lasagne in the end?

Merry Christmas everyone. Christmas Day is nearly over here and everything went pretty well. I was in charge of desserts this year for my mother's Christmas Eve Dinner and I think it went well.

I didn't make the gingerbread but I did construct it.

One in the family is allergic to eggs. So I found an egg-free butter cookie recipe. I didn't like it and will be reverting to the traditional recipe next year......and the one with allergy will just have to avoid them next year.

Trifle. It was a special request by another in the family. I don't know if I want to make this again next year.

These fruit grinches were surprisingly good. The marshmallow really set off the strawbs and grapes. I will be looking to substitute with pineapple next year.

This was fun to make! Sadly, the family didn't eat any of it. I think they thought it was too pretty to break up.

I still have food porn to download.

What was for Christmas lunch?

It was the standard turkey and salmon lunch here. I didn't grab pictures of the main course but I did make a pavlova from scratch. I really need to download pictures!

Merry Christmas everyone!

The lasagna will be made today... Hopefully I will get a picture of it.

Merry Christmas everyone

PIO - your desserts look wonderful and I can understand why they did not want to break the strawberries, it is almost too pretty.

Christmas Food

Dinner at my mother's place on Christmas Eve and we all ate too much food. I've already posted the desserts.....here's what my mother cooked.

Stir Fry vegies.

Chicken Curry.

Beef Rendang.

One of my cousin's is vegetarian. Mum made the sambal and kept some aside to use with eggs.

But she really made the sambal to have as sambal shrimp.

Chicken ribs in soya.

Pickled vegetables. I really need this recipe!

Tamarind based curry with okra. It was supposed to have eggplant as well; but mum forgot to put it in. :rotfl:

Mushroom medley.

One of my cousin's brought this green chicken curry.

My younger brother made roast beef with salsa verde. It really didn't fit in the Asian theme; but the roast beef was delicious!

My dinner!

WFDT? Prime rib, roasted potatoes, broccoli, grilled tomatoes with parmesan cheese, and silence.
