The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi Girls,
Just quick check in & to give you a brief update & what's been going on.
Besides Lily who is not doing as well as she was the start of the week, my DMs work issues & Leona who is doing much better & thank you all for your thoughts & prayers something else happened~

Greg & I have been "involved" with an adoption scandal.

Oh my dear Maria and Greg. I am so so sorry. All I can say is, I promise, every person does have their day. I understand how your heart hurts. Mine hurts for you.

Prayers for Lily, Leona and your DM. Enough is enough. You so need a good break. I will be holding you very close my dear friend.

Today is DH's birthday.

Those of you on FB saw our ordeal this morning - three of the dogs dug out of the yard and escaped.
were both wet and sad looking.

Happy birthday to your DH. I hope his day gets better.

So sorry to hear about the escapees. Those little buggers, what were they thinking. :confused3 I so hope Lucy has learned her lesson. ;) Good luck!!

Well we were going to go for breakfast but Matthew is still sleeping - Good grief it is 10:30. I guess that won't be happening.

I just have to share -
When I got home from work on Thursday, Doug had another Birthday present for me. He had ordered it and it had just came in. He got me a new Kindle. I am so excited. I have wanted one, but could just never justify spending the money on myself. Do any of you have one? If so could you give me a few hints. I printed off the users guide - all 124 pages. I have ordered a cover and already 2 books. It is so cool. Can you tell I am excited. I am a true lover of reading and this baby is great.

WFDT ~ Grilled BBQ chicken, Sauted squash, fresh peaches and cantaloupe.

Well, guess who just came out of his room. I'd better go - now I have to cook breakfast-as it is to late now to go out. Gotta love 'em.

Make it great day my friends.

Yum yum is right....I sooo hoped you would see my post !!

Im ok for the pancake mixture but Im not sure what to do with the berries...I would like them in the pancakes and also with a berry sauce.

We are not big with having meats.

I'm just making a quick stop in to give some hugs; I don't have any words for this stuff...

I just got some horrible news. Jonny's sister's husband who has been ill for a very long time passed away a short time ago. He was just released from the hospital a few days ago and seemed to be doing fairly well. SIL found him and called Johnny. Prayers for Shelly please.:sad1:

 I'm sorry to hear that. We missed you last night, by the way.

Hi Girls,
Greg & I have been "involved" with an adoption scandal. We had been in contact with a Christian based private adoption agency many months ago & to make a long story short it was all a scam & we had to cancel all our credit cards, put all the credit rating companies on alert & report it to the FBI because it is over state lines as well as international.
It's been a painful emotional roller coaster but we will get through.

 I am so sorry.

I thew a wonderful dinner party tonight , please however can come to my house please come tomorrow, I have really good food. My heart hurts........

Maria - If I lived closer I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Today is the 4th anniversary of Katrina, it feels like a lifetime ago.

I would be there too Maria.

Hey y'all,

Maria, My heart is hurting for you. I don't know what to say. I am praying for you & Greg to get through this. I just wish there was more I could do.

Becky, Those pancakes sure look yummy!

Laura, I'm glad Liam is feeling better.

Kathy, I'm praying for your family.

Stephanie, Glad that the carpool is working out, one less trip for you.

Vickie, To make a syrup with the blueberries, just put them in a pot with sugar and cook them slowly stirring & keep a close eye on it , until it gets thick & syrupy. Yum!

Sorry if I missed someone, my brain is mush today. I stayed out late painting (for fun painting on canvas not walls!) with some of my Nola thread gals. Then we went out for coffee & beignets, which I guess kept me from sleeping well. But it was worth it, lots of fun!

Dinner last night was take-out roast beef poboy.
Tonight's dinner will be smoked brisket sandwiches. DH & I went to the farmer's market this morning & picked up the brisket, some tamales & of course some veggies.

 :sad1: I am so sorry I did not see this yesterday. Prayers for Shelley and your family. How is Johnny doing?

4 years already for Katrina? It seems like it was yesterday

Today is DH's birthday. Those of you on FB saw our ordeal this morning - three of the dogs dug out of the yard and escaped. It was the longest hour of my life as we searched for them. We eventually found Ace, standing at the door of a house down the street asking to be let in. He looked normal and was just a little wet from the damp yards.

Happy birthday to your DH!
Your poor little puppies! :sad1: I saw this on Fb and felt so badly for all of you. I have had my kitties get out and it is so scary.

Well, carpool worked out much better this morning. Both boys jumped in the car all smiles, and everyone arrived home in one piece. So nice not having to make that drive twice a day!

Thank goodness for that!

Im hittin the hay lassies...Ive had a weird day and Im cream crackered.

I love the way you talk :thumbsup2

:lmao::lmao:

I saw Becky's pancakes but I wonder if you have seen Gretchen's French toast and BB syrup. Gail made the French Toast and said it was THE BOMB! She was sorry that she did not make the syrup.

Ellen- you must be so proud of Mathew! What a great guy you raised. I see you married a good guy as well!

Sheryl- I hope the Alexis finds her special friend this year. She is such a sweetie so it hurts to think that she does not have a special BBF this year.

Last night I had popcorn for dinner. I went with Marisa and the girls to the movies.

I think we will have burgers tonight. It is cold and clammy and I would be happy with pancakes but after Buddy spent all day painting in Kady's new room I think I better not push it ;)

Hi, everyone! We're back from our quick trip!

Maria - I'm so angry on your behalf! What a horrible thing! A former student of mine and her husband have also been involved in something similar, and it makes me so angry. I wish that there was something that I could do!

Kathy - Prayers are being said for Shelly and for Johnny, too. What a tragic situation.

Aimee - I'm sorry that your pets got away! Sounds like a shave is in order! Good luck with that.

Sheryl - I'm glad that the meeting with Alexis's teacher went so well. Sounds like it could be a very good year, indeed!

Vickie - Your son is so darling! I love the pictures you post of him. He's very expressive! As to the blueberries, just add a handful to your pancake batter before you put them on the griddle. Or you can pour the batter onto the griddle and then sprinkle the blueberries on top. Cook the first side, and carefully flip.

Things at my dad's were great! His play was wonderful (I may be biased, but even the people who paid to watch the reading said the same thing!). This was a staged reading with professional actors. After the play, they did a talk back with the actors and the audience, and dad took notes. They gave him some really helpful critiques, and he's back at work on the play now. I asked him what's next, and he told me that some theaters have expressed an interest in mounting a full production of it, as a workshop. Most likely venues are a theater in Las Vegas or the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. It was so hard to watch my dad watching his play. It really made him so nervous. We also got to see "The Secret Garden" yesterday afternoon, and it was really good!

I need to get to the store, as we don't have any milk or bread in the house, so I'll decide on dinner as soon as I get there.

I had a great time! :goodvibes

I didn't sleep well last night either. If you want to know why, ask Anabelle. She might know something about it....:rolleyes1

Where did you get your dinner from?

I have been sick all day. :sad2: I'm pretty sure it's just a migraine; its a headache and stomachache but now I'm getting achy too so I'm hoping it's nothing more than the migraine. :scared:

I had to go across town this morning. Getting there was not an issue. Getting home was. It took about 30 minutes to get there but 90 to get back. The radio said an 18 wheeler tipped over on its side and was blocking all 3 lanes of EB I-10. :headache: We were able to get off and take a different way home. The strange thing is that I didn't see anything on the news about it aside from the comment on an AM radio station. :confused3

I loooooooooooooove blueberries - just munching on them straight from the container! My dogs love them too :goodvibes

I do have to laugh at the bread and milk comment - I guess it'll be different when we have kids in the house but those are two things that are rarely in our house, certainly not staples, but it always seems to be the two things people have to run to the store for midweek. :confused3 I don't "do" sandwiches unless it's a fancy one at some deli and we only use milk for recipes and the occasional iced coffee.

Anyone have a suggestion/thought for me? A week or two ago, I got this really bad toothache/mouthache. I took some pain meds and it went away. A few days later, did it again so I just took meds for it. Over the last few days, I've gotten is several times and it's horrible pain. It's in my top and bottom gums on one side - like my whole jaw plus the top teeth. Is that normal for a tooth issue, like an absess? :confused3 Now I'm taking Vicodin for my teeth and gut as the Ibuprofen isn't even touching it :sad2:

Does that sound dental? Or could it be something else? I don't have dental insurance, don't even have a dentist, so I'm scared to go see one for fear of the bill but this pain today has been so bad it's put a damper on my day. Should I make an appt and face the music or see if it improves this week?

Also - in the midst of the pain, would applying heat or ice to my mouth help any?

Thanks for any thoughts :goodvibes

Good morning! BRRRR it is cold here it is only 54. My calendar says August :rolleyes1

Aimee If it was just your top teeth I would think maybe sinus. My siinus sit right on my top teeth. Also do you grind and clench your teeth it could be because of that. If is the grinding and clenching you can go to a sports store and get a mouth guard that you boil and it molds to your teeth. It is cheaper than getting a mouth guard made at the dentist. I hope it is not a abcess they are so not fun. I had one a couple of years ago and couldn't open my mouth for over a week. It made eating and brushing teeth very fun, not.

Bethany Achy body sound flu like. Rest up.

We ended up getting chinese last night cause I got lazy after cleaning.

Tonight will be the chicken last is sitting in the frig.

Good Morning!

Quick check in...we went to Charlene's yesterday for my Nephew's bday. She had lots of great food!

Today I am doing laundry and packing for the shore. We are going to Wildwood NJ.

Maria, My heart breaks for you and Greg. Please call if you need to talk or just vent.

Aimee, I hope your DH had a wonderful bday! I am so glad your babies were found.

Glynis, So glad your Dad's play was a hit!

I will be back later if time allows. Dinner will probably be left over chicken marsala over pasta and salad.

Have a great day!

Haven't had time to read back and catch up here.:hug: to all who need them.

Maria - Still holding you close in my heart.

Gotta get in the kitchen soon, Kyle's coming in for the day and I'm making a chicken gumbo and potato salad.

Good morning...

Just wanna pop in to say that the migraine is gone! :woohoo: I feel like myself again!

Have a great day everybody!

Just stopping by to say thank you for the calls, notes & postings.

Greg & I are okay.

Hope everyone is well & enjoying some sun.

Much love to all:grouphug:

Tonight is fried chicken on the grill.

How do you make fried chicken on the grill?

Buddy spent all day painting in Kady's new room I think I better not push it ;)

What color did she end up choosing?

Things at my dad's were great!

I'm so glad his play was well-received and there is more interest! I love The Secret Garden.

I do have to laugh at the bread and milk comment - I guess it'll be different when we have kids in the house but those are two things that are rarely in our house

Those things are rarely in our house because as soon as I buy them, they are gone, and I have to go get them again!

I don't know what could be causing your pain, but I would call your primary care doctor first. You don't want to pay for the dental visit if it is not a dental problem.

We are going to Wildwood NJ.

Have a great time!

Just wanna pop in to say that the migraine is gone!

I'm glad you're feeling better.

We had a nice weekend with Becky and John and my parents. John's brother and one of our friends also joined us. Yesterday, we had cod pomodoro, and today we had chicken stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon served over a fresh corn risotto and topped with a tomato salsa. It was really good. Today's dish was very pretty. Becky took a picture.

Maria, from Laura and also from me....

Yum yum is right....I sooo hoped you would see my post !!

I know this is late, sorry. Laura and the kids came over for the weekend and I never went on the computer. For me, I just mix in the berries once the wet and dry ingredients are combined. For syrup, I just heat maple syrup and put blueberries in it and heat it until the berries pop and give up their juice. This would only work with real maple syrup though. Can you get that in Scotland?

PS: re meats, I was a vegetarian for 15 years! I still eat very small amounts of meat, abd some kinds I don't eat at all.

I don't think you'd have upper and lower pain from an abcess. My thought is that you might be grinding your teeth in your sleep, especially since you were/are having pain from your condition. You could be mashing your jaw and not even know it. You need to watch this, you can crack your molars if you keep grinding. If you are taking vicodin for the pain you really should go get looked at, even if you don't have insurance.

Laura It is the "baked chicken on the grill" posted on the previous thread. Really easy and tasty :thumbsup2 I've been messing around with the spices. So far I really like some added spice,ie cayenne for extra flavor or Sheryl's cajun dust.

I made a fig cake today with fresh figs WOW that stuff is good. It tastes something like a fig newton only better.

I am glad to hear that Your dad's play was a hit!

I have been sick all day. :sad2:

I see that you are feeling better! Good!

You need to make an appointment with either your Dr or the dentist. You are taking vicodin...that is major pain. I would start with the dentist, but the Dr would be a good appointment to make as well. Either one will point you in the right direction.

I did not cook today. We had burgers and chips last night and they wer so good!

Buddy painted again today and I ran errands. I wanted to use the food in the fridge, I have got yo learn to cook for two!

Welby baked up a storm yesterday and today and Brian does not eat baked goods so someone needed to take some off her hands. It was a tough job to have to eat some berry crisp, two kinds of brownies and two different kinds of cookies but I took one or two or maybe more for the team!

Kady's room is "clear water" blue. Very pretty. She wants a "sea" theme and the bedding I ordered was discontinued. I found a set in Domestications. Wish me luck!
