The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Kathy- I am so sorry that you have an ea infection. I have only had one and I was miserable. The pain went away but I was a mess and lost hearing in one ear. Has your Dr given you a decongestant? Donny had a sever case of vertigo and was given an antivert drug. It went on for some time so the Dr gave him a decongestant and the vertigo cleared up. I hope that you ae better soon

Yes, I have an antibiotic, a decongestant and a new vertigo drug because the antivert didn't work on me. I am like a horse when it comes to meds, what works on normal people takes a triple dose to have any affect on me.:sad2:

Right now, I'm still in my PJs watching House on DVD.

I just love lazy days like that!:thumbsup2

Laura--LOL on tapping her inner diva--that must be what Emma is doing now. :sad2: She was making some awful noise and I asked her to stop b/c she was being annoying. She looked at me and said "Mom you're annoying too" Really? At 5? The teenage years should be fun at our house. Good luck to Liam's team! Can't believe he's still playing baseball!

Kathy--I'll have to go back and look at the menu to see what sushi platter I had. It was enough for a meal. Everything was super yummy, except the octopus--but I think it was the herb/spice that made it taste odd. Not bad, just odd flavor.

Yeah, I can't believe I was out running in this weather either. It was miserable. But I lost my mind in January and registered for Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge this January (13.1 miles Sat, and 26.2 miles Sunday) So I gotta get out and get some miles in. I probably lost 2 lbs in sweat this morning--and I was done before 8:30am. I'm so ready for fall!

I think we've decided to grill some burgers tonight. Maybe something else on the grill too. We'll see!

Wow! That is impressive!

I've been tossing around the idea of attempting the half marathon in March; my friend is trying to get me to do it. You have to maintain a 16 minute mile - that's a quick walk. It's the stamina I don't have, but would have enough time to get my butt in gear if I was motivated. Therein lies the problem. :rotfl2:

I don't know what my problem is today. I'm exhausted. I have slept almost literally all day. I went to bed around 11 last night, woke up around 11 today, then went down for a nap around 1 or 2 and got up at 4:30. :confused3

When he takes Kady to school he won't drop her off at the door. No. He parks and walks her all the way to her room and then watches her go to the play yard. He is positive that if something happened in teh hallway not on teacher would go to her rescue :confused3

My brother was badly bullied when he was in school, but I think attitudes have changed a lot. The schools take bullying a lot more seriously. The bus, however, seems like a free-for-all, so I try to keep my ears open about what is happening there.

You are a better woman than I am. I am a horrible runner. Unfortunately, Liam has inherited my lack of running skills. You would think looking at him that he is fast because he is thin and tall, but he runs like he is running through mud.

Welcome to the Little Diva Club, Emma! I don't think the teenage years are fun for anyone.

Bethany -- I hope you are feeling better. That doesn't sound like you to have so little energy.

Dinner tonight was pan-fried flounder, green beans and wild rice. I served my flounder with peach salsa and over a bed of fresh spinach. I took a picture, but I haven't loaded it yet.

I'm not that into octopus myself.

That's an awful lot of sleeping my friend, are you feeling well otherwise?

That sounds so good!:goodvibes

Okay, here's the dinner photo:

I probably won't get the chance to check in until late tomorrow. Liam has his game (thanks for wishing him luck! I would love to see him get the chance to pitch since he was supposed to pitch the championship game for his spring team, but I am not getting my hopes...or nerves...up) and then my parents are coming here for dinner. They are bringing lobster rolls. Have a great Sunday!

Totally O/T here but weren't you the one who suggested sushi at CG? If so we need to talk as we're on the DxDP and I would like to have sushi appetizer and entree that night, might need your suggestions. I've never had the sushi there!:goodvibes

I went there two years ago and it was soooo good, here are some of our pictures. In looking at the menu on all ears they don't seem to be serving what I ate that night. I had a sushi that had a fried octopus on it and a buffalo steak. I had the cheese board for dessert, they still serve that. :cloud9:

How have you been sleeping lately? I find that if I don't sleep well for a while my body takes over and I will sleep like that.

Those pics of CG make me wish I could eat there. We still haven't tried it!!

I scoured the house for something to eat for dinner, since I didn't want to get dressed, and came up with nothing. I ate the only can of soup we had for lunch  So, I decided to get Mickey Ds and an iced coffee and wouldn't you know their CC machine was down. I don't carry cash so I went to Sonic instead. It's not the same :sad2:

I did make peach iced tea today (see! Something productive!). 1 cup chopped peaches mashed with a fork, 1 cup hot simple syrup poured over it, let sit 30 minutes and then strain it. Tomorrow I'm making the mint-lime as well and taking both to a party.

I so want to go there again! I am hoping that I will be able to go to WDW for my birthday this year, that will be where I go for my B-day dinner.

Had a very long day, went to see Aliens in the Attic and went to the fair. The movie was cute and we had a good time at the fair.

Went through the bunny, chicken, cow, sheep and kids petting barn. Watched the pig and duck races. Had WAY to much food, some of it I did share though. We shared fries and deep fried Oreos :cloud9:, I had a pit turkey sandwich and ended the night by eating a grilled cheese sandwich.

Grilled cheese at a fair? This was a little gourmet. It was a sweet version and had Brie, Mascarpone cheese, dark chocolate, and Raspberry preserves. :cloud9::love:

Luckily I hadn't eaten much earlier in the day. For breakfast I had a chicken sausage patty and a slice of low fat cheese on a sandwich round. For lunch I had a double cheeseburger and popcorn at the movies.

Marilyn - Thanks for posting the CG pics, everything looks great! I'm really excited to try the sushi!!!

WFD - Spaghetti with a Bolognese sauce, eggplant sticks, salad and cheesy bread.

Good Morning!

Kat- I am so sorry that your meds are not working. Take it easy my friend

Bethany- are you feeling well otherwise and when did the sleepy feeling start? It is okay to have a lazy day like that but if it is how you feel chronically then we need to start asking more questions. ;)

Marilyn- your fair food was way better then my fair food!

Aimee- I love CG, it is one of my favorite restaurants in Disney. I love to have our last dinner there and time it with Wishes. It is not that I need to see the fireworks but for me there is something so Disney watching the show over the castle from that vantage point. Also, Buddy took me there when it was the Top of the World when I was 25. I had never been away from home, had never been on a plane and goodness knows never been to Disney anything. We stayed at the CR and he insisted on a Lake view room. At that time there were no daily fireworks displays so he wanted me to be able to see the Electric Parade from our room. We had a wonderful romantic meal at the Top. There was nothing left to do after that....everything was closed and I remember remarking from teh observation deck that I thought that Disney had missed out on a huge market. Well one of the Pixies must have heard because hey started on Pleasure Island right after that :lmao:

Laura- I want a lobster roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoy one once in a while but Iike it on a hot dog roll, warm and topped with butter. YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fill us in on the game!!!!!!!!

Last night's food at the Park was awful!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE got the Papa John family meal because I had a coupon and chicken strips for Kady's BFF. YUCH! on all of it. WIth teh coupon it was $42, tasted yucky and even the kids gave up on it. Buddy trudged through as much as he could, neither one of us like to throw away that much money on food but :headache:

I think I will just make burgers and fries tonight. Buddy is really not feeling well and I think I need to make an appointment with the Dr tomorrow. He told me he just wants a sandwich. We'll see later.

I miss Maria!

How have you been sleeping lately? I find that if I don't sleep well for a while my body takes over and I will sleep like that.

I've been sleeping fine, but you know me and my dreams! OMG so many lately.

Good Morning!
Bethany- are you feeling well otherwise and when did the sleepy feeling start? It is okay to have a lazy day like that but if it is how you feel chronically then we need to start asking more questions. ;)

I think I just wore myself out after last week. I was out running around most days and it's been a little on the warm side. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I got up at 7 today. Still a bit tired but nothing like yesterday, Ms. Winky Winky. ;)

Morning Y'all,

I have to go get ready for church, so I'll try to be quick! DBob surprised me with a ressie at Emeril's tonight!! They're having summer specials at all of his rests. Cuisine's of the World. So I'll be going out this evening for Indian Food at Emeril's! :confused3:laughing:

Sheryl The theather we went to had a french cooking demo going before the show. We had appitizers before the show :thumbsup2

Oh I am jealous! We don't have any really nice theaters that do things like that! Sounds fun. I'm with you on the frizzies this week. Our weather has been crazy, bad thundershowers on & off all day, with spurts of bright sunshine. Step outside & it's just like stepping into a steam room.

So guess what? Liam's team won again! They are playing for the championship tomorrow morning.

Oh don't feel too badly for Caili. She completely over-reacted. I like to say she was tapping her inner diva.

I hope Liam & the team are having a great winning game!!! :wizard:

Her tapping her inner diva! That's too funny! Alexis has no INNER Diva! It's all on the OUTSIDE!!! We either call her the drama queen or THE DIVA! She never keeps it hidden or under control.

Seriously she would be upset by that also.

Drive to Rouse's and buy it, it's Zea's and we LOVE it!!!!:rotfl:
:

:rotfl: Oh thanks, that was easy! :lmao:

I hope you start feeling better very soon!

Sheryl- I'm glad we are on the same Nana page. Poor little sweetie, I know you will make it all up to her this week. I cannot tell Buddy she was sad, he automatically thinks that kids bully so he will have a battle plan in place.''Your Bob is such a good guy!

Steph- a run in this weather??????????:worship::worship:

Laura- I am so glad for Liam! And I understand Caili.....Kady would be upset as well. She probably would not cry...she would ask to go home and that would be the end of that. I am totally with Greg. When Donny ws in school he was bullied and lets just say that the Principal was a jerk about it. Buddy would take Donny to school, get out of his truck and glare. He watched Donny walk into school every day. If he could not take him he had his nephew take him. I don;t know if it helped but short of murder...which he considered...actually he wanted to stuff the ringleader down a sewer ...he could not think of any other way to help him. When he takes Kady to school he won't drop her off at the door. No. He parks and walks her all the way to her room and then watches her go to the play yard. He is positive that if something happened in teh hallway not on teacher would go to her rescue :confused3

We are going to Six Flags tonight with Kady and her friend. YUCH! I had a late lunch so I don't need to eat too much there, the food is awful! The girls will eat a lot though. Last night they declared they only wanted popcorn Then one agreed to eat a hot dog and they split an order of the worst fries I have ever had. Then they split a fried dough with butter and sugar, ate the center and gave me the rest. They refused ice cream, played a few games and declared they were bored. So we tried to take them miniature golfing but the place was closed. So we were treated to a Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concert for the entire drive home :woohoo:WHen they did not know the words they just made them up :rotfl:

Nancy, Buddy is just great! Your kids & Kady & probably all the neighbor's children too, are very lucky to have him!:lovestruc I just love this big man but who's so sensitive to children's feelings! It's very nice.

I'd love for us to meet, and for our girls to hang together too! Alexis makes up the words & sings louder than anything!

I don't know what my problem is today. I'm exhausted. I have slept almost literally all day. I went to bed around 11 last night, woke up around 11 today, then went down for a nap around 1 or 2 and got up at 4:30. :confused3

It's called moving to the BIG EASY! I think it's the weather, it makes us all move slower!

Talked to long gotta run! Have a good Sunday Y'all!:goodvibes

Laura, I forgot to say you're dinner looked yummy!

Kat, I want pictures next time you make that salad.

When is Maria coming home? I miss her too! I also want to check with her & Lauren to make sure they don't want to do the Blue Zoo Signature dinner with us on Friday 16th. They/Y'all have dinner booked there anyway!
Oh Lauren???

Good morning all!

I almost painted myself in the room with no way out. :rotfl2: I finished the walls yesterday. I wanted to put a primer down on the floors since the previous people had pets :rolleyes1. I don't want to smell anything or give my guys anymore hints. Boy that stuff is smelly primer.

Tonight I have no idea. Last night I sauted some chicken breast and fried up my zucchini. I didn't want to stand outside in the hot air. Today is worse.

Kathy If you don't feel any better by tommorow call the doctor.

Just got home from the farm. Picked tomatoes, beets, red and yellow raspberries, peaches and some leaks and a few onions.

Have to take my DN home today and spend the rest of the day resting!

Going to make something with chicken tonight.

Hey all, i am here but trying to reclaim the house and laundry. andrew came home friday and then left again to go by his dad.

tom surprised me yesterday with a trip up to north jersey and we went to lunch at Houlihans and then went to Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken...home of the Cake Boss!!! That is Buddy from the TLC show and from some of the cakee challenges from food network.

Sheryl, i have not talked to Maria but i think we may keep our regular ADR at Blue Zoo...I really want to try his menu...funny story...I have been wearing lip liner on my eyes and eye liner on my lips! :scared1::rotfl: Have fun tonight!!!

OK, baby is fussing in the saucer...gotta go get him. he is not 100% steady in the things so he bops around...

Have a great day all!

Hi Everyone!

We're back from a great week!
Cruised back into NY this morning & now wishing I could call room service:goodvibes

The ship was by far not my favorite but the company, water & beaches certainly made up for it!

Wanted to share my new favorite drink (the official drink of Bermuda):

Dark & Stormy:

  • 2 oz Gosling's Black Seal rum
  • 3 oz Barrit's ginger beer
  • lime wedge for garnish if desired
I purchased some of the Gosling's Black Seal Rum for drinks at home.

Going to read back, hope everyone is having a great day.

Kathy--I looked at the CG menu and I had Yoshie's Deluxe Sushi Platter. I think it depends on the day what's on the platter.

Yum on Blue Zoo! It was one of my faves from back in January!

Maria--welcome home! Sounds like a yummy island drink!

Not sure WFD tonight. Went to the store yesterday so just need to decide which recipe I want to try. Will update when I decide. Now time for a lazy Sunday nap!

Aw, what a great memory!!! Maybe we should have Christmas dinner there :rolleyes1 if I can even get a reservation! It'd be two credits, or we could just pay OOP.

How fun!!! I've never dine at one of his spots - be sure and review it when you get back!

Glad you're back!!! With booze in hand!!

I made this for lunch today and it was really tasty!

Cuban Ropa Vieja
Serves 4

2 cubanelle peppers, seeded and sliced
1 cup sliced onion
1 can tomato sauce (8 oz)
1/4 cup tomato paste
1 tbsp each EVOO, cider vinegar, and minced garlic
1 tsp ground cumin
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp salt
1 boneless chuck steak (1.5 lb)
1/3 cup coarsely chopped alcaparrado or 1/3 cup pimiento stuffed olives plus 2 tbsp chopped capers
1/3 cup chopped cilantro

1. Mix all ingredients except steak, alcaparrado and cilantro in a 3.5 qt or larger slow cooker. Top with steak, turn steak over to coat with mixture.

2. Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours until steak is very tender.

3. Remove and discard bay leaf. Shred steak with two forks, stir in alcaparrado and chopped cilantro.

I didn't really measure anything, and made a few substitutions, and it turned out really tasty. I also did it on high for 4 hours since we were at church. I served it over rice. It reminded me a little of swiss steak but with a kick.

Tonight is a SS party - I am making peach tea and lime/mint tea to take with us. They are serving fajitas. Yum!
