The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

It's a wild time in our city tonight! Monday Night Football, our undefeated Saints take on rival Atlanta Falcons. The fans have been tailgating since 7 AM! Vicki even posted "Who dat" on her facebook page, gotta love that!:rotfl:
GEAUX SAINTS!!!!!!!!!:cheer2:

Gretchen, prayers for you my friend......Hold on to us we're here:grouphug:

Sheryl, please feel better.

Ann, so glad everything turned out so weel. I was thinking of you all day.

Thank you for all your birthday wishes for my Mom, I'll be sure to pass them on. I'm going to wait up for her tonight to give her our gifts.

Kat, Kyle will get it. Some much new going on in his life.

I roasted a pumpkin today and made soup, it's simmering on the stove. We'll have it tomorrow night.

bbl..

Ann - I'm so glad to hear the christening went well. Moms are amazing, sure sounds like you have an awesome one!

I am known as the lady with the best Halloween decorated yard.

That is really cool. I'm sure the kids love it. I'm sorry the football games didn't turn out better.

Sheryl -- Feel better! I have heard that most doctors aren't even testing for the flu anymore because the test is inaccurate. It sounds like you have all the right medicines though.

Kathy -- Thanks for letting us know about Sheryl. Have fun watching the game tonight!

Ann -- I'm so glad the baptism went well. Your mom is really great.

I'm planning on the baked pastina with sausage tonight but the kitchen is a disaster I refuse to cook in a dirty kitchen.

I'm like that too. Good luck with your busy week!

I wanted to accidentally of course run that menance over with my car:rolleyes1
 I have felt that way about a few dogs, but really it is the owners who should be getting run over!

Lauri -- I can send you some of my leaves too.

So dinner was broccoli cheddar soup (pretty tasty!) and mac and cheese for the kids. We had some salad left from the other day, so we also had that and some rolls from a bakery we stopped at yesterday after skating.

Caili is having a tough time adjusting to the time change this weekend. She was so tired this afternoon. Both kids are already in bed. I really hope it is just that, and she isn't getting sick. There is a lot of flu in our area. Liam said there were 8 kids absent (out of 20) from the 5th grade class next to his today. :sad2:

LEAVES....We are surrounded by oaks. Poor Ron raked all day Saturday to prepare for the party and by Sunday morning the yard was completed covered again.

Sheryl - I'm so sorry that you are not feeling well. Take care of yourself, my friend!

Kat - Thanks for passing the news along. It's nice to know that you are close enough if Sheryl needs you!

Election day tomorrow! I have to remember to get out and vote early! Timothy and I have a lot of errands to run, so I need to vote first and get that done! Jacob is turning 10 on Sunday, so I need to finalize his birthday presents. Alan and I will be taking him out for dinner on Saturday night, and he's requesting Joe's Crab Shack. He is positive that he loves crab (he's never tasted it!), so it should be an interesting night! After that, we'll probably take him to see a movie, the new Christmas Carol will be open, so maybe that will be the one!

I've already decided on dinner tomorrow: tuna melt sandwiches and soup of some kind! It just sounds good to me!

Night, friends!

/
:surfweb: Morning!!

WFD- I have chicken defrosting again. I am probably going to grill it with some of Tyler Florence's leftover Asian rib marinade. DM made them for the party and she had a ton of extra sauce. Most likely butternut squash and spanish rice on the side.

Gretchen- :hug::hug:

Hey y'all, sounds like Sheryl could use some good thoughts and prayers, she just sent me this:

Hugs and Prayers for Sheryl on the way!

Baptism was beautiful.

I knew that it would be! Glad that you all had a wonderful day celebrating this Blessed event

I read somewhere that the time change wreaks havoc on us but I cannot remember why :confused3

I bet the kids are fighting the stuff going around. It takes a lot out of them. There are a lot of kids missing school here too, Marisa kept Kady home not long ago, she was not running a fever but she felt awful. Marisa said she was in her jammies all day, took a long bath, slept, slept and slept.

Election day tomorrow! I have to remember to get out and vote early!

Here too! There is this guy, I have no idea what his name is. He takes his kids to school with Kady's class and is in our Church. He is a JERK! I guess he is running for something, I know this because Marisa said he was hassling the Librarian because the library is open today. "Hello! It's election Day!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are the folks working in the Library going to vote if you are open???? What if I rent a movie and cannot return it because I am standing in front of the school all day....I am running you know!!!!!!":headache:

The gal was actually pretty funny, she told him that in that case.......he would pay a late fee :lmao::lmao:

Our town is pretty small, very rural and we really don't have major differences here often. I am usually an even keeled voter on town issues, I don't vote party line, if I like how things are running I vote to keep them in, if not I vote to fire them. This is one of the first times I am voting against a person because he is a jerk in life so I think he will be a real skunk in politics!

I need to cook tonight. Probably chicken something. I have no sandwich meat and I hate giving that to Buddy for lunch. I always cook something that he can have on sandwiches for lunch. He has given me this nonsense that he never knows where he is going to be for lunch so he cannot use the microwave at work. His buddies threw him under the bus, he can be just about wherever he wants to be whenever he wants to be there but if I knew that he would not be able to have sandwiches...he would get a hot lunch ;) who who would want that :confused3:rotfl::confused3

Here's last night's cider braised chicken with buttered egg noodles and sauteed spinach.

Have not had a chance to read back yet but I did see that Sheryl is sick. Feel better soon, Sheryl! There is so much stuff going around right now.

I am in agreement with you! We face a similar situation with our mayoral race. One of our candidates tried to put a charter school in my neighborhood without any consideration to what the increase in traffic would do to us. It's not that I'm against charter schools, but the people who use this particular charter school come from a community 20-30 minutes away. No one in our neighborhood (except this man's daughter) wanted their kids in the charter school. He tried some pretty underhanded things, and it got real ugly. I don't even want to think what he would do to our town as mayor.

So, I'll go vote, and let my opinion be known. At least then, I know that I've done my best. As I used to tell my seniors, if you don't vote, then you don't have the right to complain!

Good morning everyone.

Sheryl- Hope your feeling better soon!

Nancy- I'm just glad my husband won't be anywhere near me when he opens his lunch and sees a meager amount of peanut butter. His lunch is always a suprise and I can just picture his sad little face. I need to do some cooking too. (Of course he's welcome to make his own lunch.)

Ann- I'm glad the baptism went so well, and provided you with yummy leftovers.

Laura- That's alot of kids out. We haven't been hit yet, and I'm hoping being somewhat isolated helps. I feel kind of selfish, I don't want her to miss any school so I can justify pulling her out for disney. That said, if she's sick I'll still let her stay home. So far, so good.

Has anyone heard from Vickie? She was so excited about her trip I wanted to hear about it.

Don't know what's for dinner, but something soft. I have a teeth cleaning this morning and I think I get xrays too. Going to the dentist kills my jaw keeping it open for so long. I guess that means I might have to have ice cream for dinner!

Have a great day everyone!

I guess that means I might have to have ice cream for dinner!!

Shhhhhhh, every once and a while that is okay!

-----
So proud of myself...I finally figured how to add a pic to my signature!! I am not as big of a computer idiot as I thought. Maria & Kathy, thanks for sending my the holiday decorations.
---------

So are we doing our holiday card exchange again??? Christmas will be here before we all know it.

Hey y'all, sounds like Sheryl could use some good thoughts and prayers, she just sent me this:

"I wanted you to know that I haven't checked in on our threads cause I'm really sick. Hit me yesterday afternoon like a ton of bricks. I went to the dr., I have a bad sinus infection & he thinks ( although he didn't test me?) swine flu. He gave me lots of meds, a steroid injection, antibiotics, tamiflu, steroids & a cough medicine and told me to take mucinex dm. He said I should feel better quickly. I hope he's right."

Lots of good thoughts, hugs and prayers for you my friend, call if you need me!

Kat, thanks for keeping us posted! And Sheryl, I hope you kick this quickly.

Baptism was beautiful. My girl was the only baby out of the five that slept the whole service. She opened her eyes once the water hit her head then right back out again. :goodvibes Party was turned out well, fun chaos...wine helped. DM really was a huge help.

I'm so glad it went well. At my nephew's christening, once he realized there was water in the baptismal font, he tried to leap out of the minister's arms to jump in.

I'm planning on the baked pastina with sausage tonight but the kitchen is a disaster I refuse to cook in a dirty kitchen. If DH opts to not clean it when he gets home, we'll do something else. ;)

That's my philosphy too Aimee. My deal with Kenny is that I cook and he cleans. If I get home to a dirty kitchen, he is guaranteed to get takeout (usually something he doesn't like ;) ).

Ellen We had way less than 50 kids. Mostly really young kids. I have soo much leftover candy.

We didn't get any. Not one. We live on a road that dead ends at the river, so I guess the kids figure there aren't enough houses to justify the long walk. My mom's neighborhood usually gets lots of kids so maybe I'll have some next year.

Thank you for all your birthday wishes for my Mom, I'll be sure to pass them on. I'm going to wait up for her tonight to give her our gifts.

I don't know how I missed this, but I hope she had a wonderful birthday.

Our school district has started vaccinating the children in the schools hoping to keep from having an epidemic. The elementary schools are this week, followed by the middle schools and finally the high school.

Robin I hope they are able to work quickly and keep your discomfort to a minimum.

I ended up making meatloaf and parslied potatoes last night. We had a bunch leftover so that's what we're having tonight too.

As I used to tell my seniors, if you don't vote, then you don't have the right to complain!
:thumbsup2

We haven't been hit yet, and I'm hoping being somewhat isolated helps.

I hope you remain germ-free. It is spreading so fast. It was only two weeks ago that I first heard about it being in the elementary school across town, and now it is widespread. I really hope my two can avoid it. Caili already missed six days, and I am taking her out for another six for Disney.

Our school district has started vaccinating the children in the schools hoping to keep from having an epidemic. The elementary schools are this week, followed by the middle schools and finally the high school.

My neighbor and I were just talking this morning about how we wished they had done something like that here. At this point, I think it is too late. They are saying kids under 9 need two doses, and with the way things are going, all the kids are going to be exposed before the vaccine would be effective.

Nancy -- That is funny about Buddy and his sandwiches.

Caili did wake up feeling much better today. She was alert and she said she wasn't tired, so that is good. Today is our busy day...skating and ballet, so we'll eat in between.

Maria - Sorry that I missed this yesterday, but I hope your Mom had a great birthday!

Kathy - Kyle will get the hang of it. That first year is always the hardest.

Ann - I'm so glad the christening went well.

Gretchen, sorry that you are now having to deal with vertigo. Could it be connected to the flu somehow; maybe there's still congestion somewhere causing it? In any case, I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I bought our plane tickets for next month's Disney trip last night! It looks like Greg is not going to be able to join us (he can't get leave), but we booked our ADRs for 6 people anyway, just in case something changes. We have adrs at Ohana (breakfast), Jiko, BlueZoo, Kona Cafe (lunch), Rose and Crown, Raglan Road (lunch), California Grill, Artist Point, and Coral Reef. Now I just have to finalize which house to book. I think we are going to stay in Windsor Hills this time. The house we've rented for the past few years in Emerald Isle seems to be off the rental market.

:cool1::yay:

Laura - I'm sad that Greg will not be able to get leave and join ya'll in Disney. I hope ya'll still have a great time.

Lauri I would gladly ship you some leaves I have plenty to share;)

Zip ~ I could send you some of my leaves if you are feeling left out. ;)

Lauri -- I can send you some of my leaves too.

I can just see the look on my husband's face when boxes of leaves start arriving at my door!!! :rotfl::lmao:

This is a crazy busy week - Sunday is Children's Sabbath and I'm doing that dance between making the service what it's been, or what I want it to be, and working with a fairly new pastor who may or may not have strong opinions on it... so far, so good, but a lot of work.

Good luck planning the service. I hope it turns out beautifully. I'm having one of those weeks myself.

I'm a bit tired from being up so late watching the Saints beat the dirty birds. I watched the last 3 minutes from behind a pillow, but am greatful my screams didn't wake up Bob or Erin. The dogs had even deserted me for the bed, although I expected that from Fish who is skittish and hates football season in my house!! I try really hard not to get too carried away, because I hate that it upsets her, but sometimes I just can't help it. ;)
Tonight's dinner will be leftovers from Sunday, turkey sandwiches with the rest of the stuffing.

Sorry if I missed someone. Have a great day ya'll!

Fly by - busy day. We are planning on sour cream chicken enchiladas for dinner, but it is Taco Tuesday and he made noises about that. fine with me!

Hey y'all,

Big thanks & hugs to my dear friend Kathy for keeping everyone updated! :lovestruc

Thanks & hugs to all of you good people for the warm wishes & prayers!!! :grouphug: I'm amazed everyday with the wonderful friends I've found here!

I'm feeling a lot better. But I think it's the steroid "high". My throat still hurts, still choked up, super tired, but somewhere in there is better. :confused3:laughing: My stomach got messed up yesterday too, but feels better today. (The dr said that was the only syptom I didn't have for the swine flu, so I'm assuming it is flu.)
My daughter has been a Godsend, she called around & got me into a dr yesterday, took over Alexis duty yesterday & today! DH his dinner & all I had to do this morning was get him off to work. Then back to sleep until noon! I'm sad about not having Alexis today, it's her birthday & she was student of the week. So DD got to bring the cupcakes to school & the poster and other stuff. Silly that I'm sad about it, cause it would have been way too hard to do.

I was able to lay on the couch & watch our Saints win! Being sick saved me from a stress stomachache & the screaming I usually do. Actually allowed me to have an appreciation for how well the Falcons played. That's not me, I usually want them stomped, tarred & de-feathered!

Becky, I think you have given me my appetite back!! Oh my does that look like comfort food right now!

Ann, I'm so glad the christening went so well! What an angel for her to have slept through it! :lovestruc

I don't know where I picked up the swine flu, it's probably too long to have been from DW. :confused3 and I am nutty about handwashing & wiping down grocery cart handles, etc, etc. :confused3
The dr said my surgery probably still has affected my immune system. No one else in the family has had it & Please God don't let Alexis get it!!! :flower3: We sat with them in church on Sunday & with Alexis sitting right next to me.:sad2:

Laura, I hope your kids aren't getting sick! Prayers that they don't!

Nancy, When does Buddy go back for the next test? How is Marisa doing with her knee?

I've started thinking about the holidays. Too tired to do much else. We will be having Thanksgiving here. Last year family allowed & was so happy with my shake up of Christmas dinner with the aged prime rib roast we did, that they have already requested it for dinner. So I'm thinking about shaking up Thanksgiving with some new side dishes. Mom will never let go of the turkey & dressing, so I need to be creative somewhere right?

I hope I didn't miss anything big. Gotta go cough & rest now. I'd eat if I had Becky's dinner! :goodvibes

Love all of you!:grouphug:

Robin – I miss Vickie here too! I sent her a message on facebook, asking her to please come home!:goodvibes

Ann – Conquering something new on the computer is a big deal to me, good for you!!!:thumbsup2

Lauri – I’m chuckling picturing you hiding behind the pillow. I had to do the same thing with Sammie, she hated football season because I’m a screamer.

Sheryl – I was thinking about you last night, hoping you were feeling well enough to watch the game, glad to hear you were! Take it easy and get well soon my friend!

Gretchen - Are you feeling better?
