The Vatican Has Updated the Seven Deadly Sins

Don't worry JoeEpcotRocks. The Holy Father in Rome loves you. And JPII looks down from Heaven and smiles on you. :cool1:

Because the goal is not to sin in the first place, but sin happens.

That doesn't seem to be what Joe is saying, but I may still not be understanding him correctly.

Our goal is not to sin as well, and the listing of things that are sinful is designed to help us know how to stay way from those behaviors.

Too bad the Vatican doesn't have understanding. Meekness is submitting to the Word of God, not changing it.

The Catholic Church isn't changing the word of God. Peter, the disciple, was the first Bishop of Rome (Pope).
Do you have some sort of direct line to God to know that for 1500 years until the Reformation the Catholics were completely wrong?

For our benefit (and the world's benefit).

The same reason we give our own children behavior guidelines, and we love them whether they follow them or not -- just like God does.

Well, that's what the "sin list" is for Catholics-additional behavior guidelines. Baptists have guidelines for their members that aren't specifically Biblical-like the ban on dancing and card playing. Gambling is a sin to some denominations, drinking is a sin in some denominations. Churches do this sort of thing all the time. I don't understand the problem with a Church trying to assist it's members in avoiding sin. :confused3

Well, I am not answering for Joe, but I do believe that all sin can be forgiven through grace, but we (and by we, I mean those who believe) should try our best not to sin in the first place. And if we are truly believers we move away from sin as Jesus (the spirit) lives within us. But still, sin happens. I don't think I helped. :rotfl:

I follow the Bible. I have no interest in religion or denominations.

My biggest concern is when people proclaim from the pulpit anything contrary to what Jesus did on the cross re salvation and our direct access to God.

Well said.

Joe,
So once I accept Jesus I am good to go and there are not other things I need to do?

A child whose parents have no consequences and bails them out of all bad deeds does not walk the straight and narrow path. They do whatever pleases them at that moment and let the parents deal with fixing it. If I am good to go by accepting Jesus, then I might as well act like the kid above, since all sins past and future have already been forgiven.:cool1: :cool1:

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

That's a part of our Creed-and I don't see how it reduces the defining aspect of Jesus's death on the cross and it's relation to salvation. I've also never been told that I don't have direct access to God. :confused3

I respect you for going it alone, I don't think I could do that. I like the community aspect of belonging to a Church. I feel that I can do more to serve others as part of a group than alone.

Catholics are not Sola scriptura, but there is Biblical back up for the Catholic belief.

I guess were close in agreement. :goodvibes Sorry, I get my dander up so much re the Vatican.

Actually I do belong to a church, but it's non-denominational.

I'm certainly not an apologist for the Vatican. They're men and subject to the same temptations that every other human being-greed, ego, lust...and sometimes it is VERY hard to take them seriously when they start preaching.

However, my own experience with the Catholic Church from my school days to today has been overwhelmingly positive. I've been fortunate to encounter good and holy Priests and Sisters whose commitment to serving others puts me to shame. I've worked side by side with them at soup kitchens and pantries and studied the Bible with them. I can honestly say that I've never seen a shred of hypocrisy from these folks.

I think for many Catholics the local experience with their own parish is what matters most to them.

Doesn't anyone it just a little "amazing" that an individual can do this? I just shake my head at the blind following ...

Kathee, yup an atheist, thank gawd, lol

Blind followers? Gosh, that's a really profound and thought provoking statement.

You poor Catholics...no more polluting for you. ;) And if you don't buy Girl Scout cookies, is that a social injustice?

Just kidding. I do find this quite interesting after all this time the list got updated.

I haven't read the thread (just the OP), but I think this is really stupid. Seriously...people have to be told that pedophilia is a "deadly" sin??? And that pollution is on the same level??? Cuckoo!!!

If you steal $1 or $1,000,000, isn't it still theft.

A sin is a sin.

What do you mean by I wasn't paying attention? I used the term audience in quotes for those who are not familiar with the players in a Catholic mass.

:flower3:

Sorry. Without knowing your background, it didnt READ as that.
