Okay, I didn't reply to the other thread (that
Walmart v. Target thread), but...
I've just got to say,
in my neck of the woods, I have never shopped in a Target that wasn't clean, well organized, well stocked, well staffed or had weird customers. (i.e. scary looking people).
WalMart, on the other hand, was a disaster. Cluttered aisles, indifferent employees, out-of-stock items and CREEPY customers (as in I was keeping a close eye on my purse).
I am not a judgmental person when it comes to income of other folks, but my personal security is another matter.
If it offends other people to hear that I do not want to spend my time around shifty people, then either they're wearing rose colored glasses, or they aren't being honest.
Deciding to shop in a nicer store (whether that store is Target, or the "good Walmart" on the other side of town) is not much different than deciding that you would prefer to live in a safe neighborhood, or want for your kids to be enrolled in a good public school system.
I am not interested in shopping in a store that screams chaos and low class (and class is not dependent on income, btw) just to satisfy someone's idea that it doesn't matter where you shop, people are people, and people aren't dangerous, and judging them based on their appearance is wrong. "Someone else" (who seems to care so much about offending the "dregs of society," as one poster put it) won't care about how
I feel when I have been assaulted (either verbally or physically) or robbed by said dregs. And yes, you can tell things from people based on their appearance (ever see a crazy person's eyes? or the eyes of a predator? those eyes are often attached to an unkempt person).
Okay, stepping off my soapbox now.
