llebrekniT, I went in the store looking for one of those, and left with a computer hookup. I decided I still wanted one, went back, and the sale had ended!!! Here is the deal...
there are several types of DVD's, but mainly there are + and -, and there are three versions of that...R / RW / RAM.
The Ram can onlyplay in special players. Most newer players can play the R and the RW. Some Players like the + (mostly older) and the newer players tend to like the -.
Most of the "Cheapy" players ($249+) will only do do + OR - disks. Most Sony's will do both ($700+)
For example, the Phillips player I Didn't buy started at $399, it went up to $429 on Sunday. It would play all of the formats, but would only record in the DVD+R, DVD+RV formats (If I remember). they originally told me it would record in all formats.
The Techie Sales Associate (The one person at the store that actually understood the technology, got a hold of me and said, Look, you can buy a video input card for your computer for $199, a DVD Writer (that will write in all formats) for $105. It comes with the software to edit and everything. Boughtit, got it home, hooked it up, and realised that it was too far from my VCR, and DW wouls kill me for running the cables. Yesterday morning (Before going to the Airport) I went comparison shopping... Ultimate had an Open Box for $499, Circuit City had it for $449. Went back to Best Buy, and it went "Off Sale" and was back at $429. What bothered me more was the Tag on Saturday said it would record in all of the formats, but on Sunday it said it would play in all formats.
All of them EXCEPT the (really expensive) Panasonic ones have Cam-Corder (1394) pluggies.
Did I answer your question without getting to Techie?
