The SUPER GOOFS are gearing up for the fall racing season in SEPTEMBER!

Well, I did my second 10-miler today. I managed to shave off almost 5 minutes as compared to last week's run. I've been doing my long runs on trails (actually I've been doing pretty much anything 5 miles and over on trails), so I'm hoping that it will translate over for a road race.

Do you think this is an okay plan (although it's a little late in the game for me to change things!)? I hope I'm not setting myself up for injury by not running more long runs on the road.

Shan Congrats on the 12 miles. Try not to think of when you ran faster--try to think about when you couldn't run at all. (Ok, easier said than done!) I have total confidence you'll make it safely through the marathon with no fear of the sweepers.

Kim Sending positive thoughts your way for you and your brother. Sometimes the best races happen when you don't have a goal. Try not to put any pressure on yourself for a specific result. (Advice I will not be taking for myself in my marathon!)

Nicky I think you'll be fine. I train doing 2/3 runs on a treadmill (not my long run) and I have also done some trail races. MY DH always says that trails take less of a toll on your legs (good for training) and can also be harder to run. So I think you'll be fine.

Today I'm going to help a not-so-local running store with some race prep. For that, I will get $30 towards one of their races. I actually told them I'd help for the next several Wednesdays.

And I get to book my DD and my trip to WDW in December-yeah!

Maura

Kim, sorry to hear about your brother. I hope he is doing better.

Got in 22 miles this week. I think I'm nearing the end of my shoes, arch is starting to get a tad sore. It seems I can't go much further than 300 miles. I'll have to look for a different style this time and I'm kinda dreading that.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend. My oldest has a swim meet tomorrow. Somehow I lucked out serving sack lunches instead of timing! My girls are actually off next week thanks to our new year round calendar. We're not doing anything, just gymnastics and swim practices. Gonna try to get them to the aquarium Monday.

Go Goofs! :cheer2:

Shan I have been doing my long runs in the Nike Vomero 5 and they have lots of run and are comfy. The drawback:$130! But I got this pair on sale at Nordstrom, of all places, for $87.

Did 10 today at "marathon pace" which means I , of course, ran somewhat faster. It went okay-not stellar, but no worries.

Have a good weekend.

Hi everyone, just dropping in to give my August mileage. Sorry it's so late but we have been in LA for the Disneyland Half Marathon and spent the next week there at the parks and visiting family. My miles were 135.7 for the month.

We had a great time at the race. This was my wife's first half marathon and had a lot of fun. My wife was pretty beat up for several days afterward and I was pretty sure this race was a one-time only thing for her. Just last night she said she is thinking about doing another half to try to better her time. Good for her! :thumbsup2

Running through the parks was fun although they were a blur to me for some reason. Maybe I was just too focused on coaching my wife. My favorite part of the race was Angels Stadium. I don't even like baseball but thought it was such a neat experience being down there on the field.

The rest of Anaheim...let's just say they could have made the world's best 10K by cutting out most of that. Start at the stadium and finish at the parks.

I was so happy to finally get my Coast to Coast medal. It's easily the nicest looking medal I've ever seen. It looks GREAT on my wall!

I'll catch up on the thread this weekend but I hope you are all having a great September!

At Disney right now. I got up early before work on Friday to run 10 because I knew I wouldn't run at all that day since we were flying out that evening. Yesterday ran a little over 4, but waited until around 9pm. We are at the BWV so I ran between Epcot and DHS a couple of times with a lap around the Boardwalk for good measure. I won't add the Boardwalk again unless I'm running in the morning. Too many people to weave around. So two days down and still staying committed. Now I just need to keep the focus for the rest of the week.

Question for all you experts!

I'm running my first race ever at the Wine and Dine :) Doing the 4.8mile portion of the relay.

I hear everyone talk about tapering prior to a race. Could someone please explain to me how/when this is done??:confused3 Should I start now? Wait until next week?

Thanks.
~Bettina

Steve Sounds like you had a good trip and race. Sorry I didn't get to meet you. I like the medals--they are hefty!

Jason Hope your Disney trip is fun. I get my own chance to run the boardwalk in December--aslo staying at BWV (well at least for part of it. The rates jump astronomically right before Christmas!)

Bettina Tapering usually applies to longer distance races. All it means is reducing the amount of mileage the 2 weeks or so before the race to give your body time to incorporate your training and slightly recover. If you are following a training plan, it likely has a taper built in. Typically the last few long runs reduce in mileage and the last week before the race also has reduced mileage. The 10k plan I followed earlier this year had the last 3 weekly long runs at 10, 8, 7, Race. And slightly shorter tempo run the week before the race.

Just take it easy the week before your race. Run--but keep the runs slightly less mileage than you would normally do. And take it easy the 1-2 days before the race. Don't forget that if you are at Disney, the tendency is to walk a ton! Take it easy the day of the race.

As for me.....did 15 miles yesterday. I'm ready for the training to be over, I think. The weather is cooling off nicely for runs, and that feels nice.

Hi Goofs! Hope everyone is doing well! I am gearing up for another 5K this weekend. I was able to find 4 non-Saturday races between now and the Princess 1/2 at the end of February that I am planning on doing. The 5K this Sunday and another on Halloween, our local 10K Turkey Trot, and then a 5 miler on New Years Day. I am excited to finally put my training into some events! My goal for Sunday is to cut about 2 minutes from my last 5K in August. I am hoping to be able to do that because I will be running on a paved road during the day instead of at night on a trail, which I had to slow down on.
I have been a bit inconsistent in getting my runs in since school started again, but I got 3 in tonight and felt great! For my fellow northerners: this will be my first winter running and I was just wondering what you typically wear as the weather gets colder? TIA!

Ashleigh Good luck on your race. As for winter training (do I have to think about that now?) I am one of those that gets really warm when I run. My typical winter running outfit for any run above 20 degrees or so--with minimal wind or precipitation--is a pair of loose running tights and a long sleeve tech shirt. Also a headband and running gloves (which I always store after 2 miles). I do own a wind jacket, which I have worn a couple of times, but I always get warm and end up taking it off.

Maura

Sorry, Maura, to make you think of that cold weather coming!! I was chilly as I started my run yesterday, so that got me thinking about it...although I am ready for all the road construction to be finished around here! Thanks for the advise!

:yay: Hi all! So far, this week has been pretty decent to me! I went out for a trail run on Monday. About a mile in, I crossed paths with a woman out for a leisurely stroll. She never even glanced at me, so I didn't go out of my way to acknowledge her either. I just continued on my way. I ended up passing her again on my second lap. She had gone approximately 1/2 mile, while I had run about 2.5 since I had passed her. On this passing, she saw me and exclaimed, "Wow, you're really fast!" To which I thought a couple of things:

1) that was the nicest thing I have heard while running, and
2) she was completely lying :rotfl2:

Now, I know I will never, EVER, be confused with a fast runner, but I must admit that this simple comment was the best motivator I could have possibly had that day. It's amazing how far a little pixie dust can go pixiedust:

Today I completed my last long run before my W&D 1/2 next Saturday. I decided that if I thought I could make it the entire 13.1 miles that I would try it, but I wasn't going to push past 10 or 11 miles. Well, I ended up going the entire half marathon distance! Plus, I was running on a trail, so it was much more hilly than I'm expecting the W&D to be...AND I ended up finishing in less time than I was allotting for my race pace! So I am hoping that this is a good sign and that I will be a little quicker come race night. But even if I'm not, well, at least I know I won't have much of a problem covering the actual mileage.

Tapering has never sounded any better!

Hey Goofs, I hope everyone doing the Wine & Dine is excited about their trip and race and has a great time. Enjoy your week of tapering!

I realize how much I've fallen out of shape the last couple of months. I was primarily working with my wife leading up to the Disneyland Half Marathon as it was her first. I did all the distances with her but not at a speed I needed to be doing. I also haven't done any hill or speed work in a long time. I've been really feeling it since the race. Even just a few miles seems like a killer to me now. It's really frustrating but I have no one to blame but me.

I've been doing a lot of work at the gym lately trying to shed a few pounds that have somehow snuck onto my body  but I really need to get outside more to get in the quality runs.

The Disneyland Half was my only race in September but I have a really busy October with two half marathons, three 5K's (including a trail race), and a 5-mile beach run. :faint:

I can't wait to read all the reviews of the Wine & Dine Half as we are planning a trip next October and want to do it. Have fun!

Hi Goofs,

Ran my final 20-miler on Sunday and it went pretty well, although I was trying to decide whether the twinges I was feeling in my legs were running-related or yoga-related. I think lately they have been yoga-related, but I want to make sure that 3 weeks out, I don't develop the dreaded IT band issue.

So I'm supposed to be tapeing, but today have 8x800 speed workout. I'm tired just thinking about it!

Nicky Revel in the compliment that woman gave you. I'm sure she was sincere, and everyone can use a little ego stroking now and then! And congrats on your longest run! You sound all set to have a great W&D.

Good luck and have dun to everyone running the Wine & Dine this weekend . Tell us all about it. I need to decide whether to add it to my list for next year. I still have 3 WDW races to do--Goofy, Princess, and now Wine and Dine. And W&D seems like the first one to consider.

Suzanne Congrats on your 15k! Another medal to add to your collection, which must be huge by now.

Hiya Goofs. Sorry I've been MIA for a bit. I've been enjoying the weather and prepping for the Wine and Dine this weekend. I don't have much to compare it to, but I will be more than happy to share my experience with you. If I don't pop in again before I leave, have a great one.

Miles for Sept.--115. (and feeling great about it)

Finally adding up my August miles. Sorry for the delay! 69.67 miles. September mileage will be even lower, thanks to the family distractions. The good news is that my brother is out of intensive care and is now in a rehab center to get his strength back.

I hope to see some of you who are running the Wine and Dine. I can't believe it's at the end of this week!

Good evening Goofs! Sorry I haven't posted in a while, its been a crazy month and now its almost over!! Hoping to see some of you at the Wine and Dine 1/2, I'll be wearing my Wish green! I am going to try and make it to the AKL meet on Friday also. Thankfully, the rain seems to be pulling away from Florida and it looks like a clear night on Saturday, keeping my fingers crossed!!

From my 15K this past Saturday, after a shower and laundry!

Congrats on your race, Suzanne! I LOVE the little feet on the medal. Think they'll have the same design next year? My husband is a podiatrist, so I'm thinking we *need* to do this race for the bling. Wouldn't that look terrific hanging up in his office? Hmm, I wonder what other races are out there that have foot images on their medals. Any recommendations?

I recently filled up my last Runners' World paper training log and started using an online version instead, so I actually have my September mileage handy. Wow, that was much easier than getting out my calculator! 45.6 miles for the month. Oh, wait, are we still doubling race day miles? I haven't done a race since March, so I can't recall. If we're doubling, please add an extra 3.1 for my small town's 5K last week. (Got a PR, by the way, so I was thrilled!)

With such low mileage behind me and the Wine and Dine half tomorrow night, I have to admit that I feel like I'm about to take a final exam without having studied. Here's hoping the "test" is easy (low temps and low humidity, please) and I do better than I deserve!

Suzanne Neat medal. Another good race for you!

Kim & Suzanne & Todd& Nicky &who else? Have a great time at the race tomorrow night. The Goofs will represent! Come back with stories and pictures. Maybe I'll do it next year.

I am taking a few days off to see if I can get rid of a nagging claf strain that I have. It hasn't killed my running, but it won't go away. Problem is--even walking I can feel it. So I'm going to take ibuprofen and not do anything (other than the required dog-walking) for the next few days.

In the meantime, I have given in and started a Facebook account. Seems like I may only ever know what's going on with assorted family and friends if I have one. I am a total novice!
