The Strange Facts You Know thread....

I learned this on the Dis.

If you feed your dog really high quality dog food, his poop will be smaller.

(Please do not give me a tag that says this)

This is true because the volume of food they eat can be less.

The first U.S. president to have his photo taken was John Quincy Adams.

Speaking of early photographs..
I think one of my favorite early photographs is the 1848 one of Albert Gallatin (as found on Wikimedia at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AlbertGallatin.jpeg):

I think the earliest First Lady to have been photographed probably was Dolley Madison in this ca.1848 photograph:

I am awestruck that photographs exists of these people who helped found the United States, a photo of the man who served as Jefferson's Secretary of the Treasury, of the woman who served as Thomas Jefferson's hostess and who knew Washington, Hamilton, Burr, Monroe...

Now back to your regularly-scheduled strange facts,
agnes!

The guy who assassinated Pres. McKinley was named William Czolgosz. No, I didn't have to check the spelling. Why? Because his great-nephew was one of my teachers in HS.

Also, supposedly it's impossible for people to have freckles on the palms of their hands, but I have 3 on my left hand. :)

The Yorkshire Terrier breed standard calls for a dog to have a "pure silk coat." A pure silk coat is the kind of hair you see on human hair models . You can often tell if a yorkie has a pure silk coat because when you shine a light into their eyes (or take their picture without a flash), the glow that comes back is green or blue. Dogs who have an incorrect coat texture (a cottony coat) will shine red or show up red in their pictures.

The word POSH is an acronym derived from when Victorian ERA ocean liners would travel to and from Britain/India.... Only the wealthy and elite were able to obtain these rooms.

First class rooms would be assigned as follows:

PO - Port (side) Out going to India
SH - Starboard (side) Home when returning to England

A saltine cracker has 13 holes. Bucky Dent, the baseball player, taught me that.

Hmm, my useless fact is not Dis friendly. :rotfl2:

So since I can't use my first fact I will give you another.

The plural of platypus is platypi. Only the uneducated say platypusses (per my Aussie co-worker).

Did you know, rubber bands last longer when they are refrigerated? :)

South African penguins are also known as jack *** (think donkey) penguins, because their braying sounds like donkeys. They are also temperate weather penguins, and their climate is roughly 35-80 degrees.

(useless info from a former zookeeper...:goodvibes )

The distance between our wrist and elbow on the inside of our arm is the same size as our feet.

Spanish moss is neither Spanish, nor moss; but is actually a member of the pineapple family. :teeth:
So interesting!

Also, the left side of our faces is more representative of our true emotions.
This is interesting, because you know how people raise one eyebrow... well, I can ONLY raise my left!

Okay boring but true...

In 1896, Buffalo became the first city with electrically lit streets.

Thus leading to this fact...

Buffalo’s Nightlife doesn’t call it quits until 4 a.m., rather than 2 a.m. like most
other cities in the U.S.

And for those who like to read...

Buffalo is known as the City of Light due to the Hydropower generated from
Niagara Falls.

I can only wink my right eye - my left I cannot be closed independently of the right. I wonder if there is some connection with your eyebrow raising oddity.

I hope I am allowed to post this, given that I'm not trying to advertise the site. Anyway, if you go down below the submit details there are some great "things we didn't know". There's a whole lot of baloney in there too, but I have spent many a happy hour reading the submissions.

A saltine cracker has 13 holes. Bucky Dent, the baseball player, taught me that.
---------------

Did you have to post this? :headache:

Now I'm tempted to get out one of my saltine crackers and count the holes..:rotfl::rotfl:

My useless facts: Penguins have knees, you absolutely can not put your elbow in your ear, and Grape-nuts are made of wheat, yeast and flour. They are neither grapes nor nuts.

111, 111, 111 times 111, 111, 111 = 12, 345, 678, 987, 654, 321...6th grade facts from my son.

Also, there are no words in the English language that rhyme with purple, orange, silver and month.
