Dr. Anthony Fauci (Dir. of the National Allergy and Infectious Diseases Inst.) says senior citizens should not travel by plane or by cruise even without any underlying health condition. Should all the old folks now be denied boarding at the port? Someone will need to take care of all the grandchildren.

The US State Dept. has advised US citizens not to cruise for now. So, not just the elderly at this point.

I imagine they might have to cancel cruises now.

Passengers on Cruise Ships

U.S. citizens, particularly travelers with underlying health conditions, should not travel by cruise ship. CDC notes increased risk of infection of COVID-19 in a cruise ship environment. In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, many countries have implemented strict screening procedures that have denied port entry rights to ships and prevented passengers from disembarking. In some cases, local authorities have permitted disembarkation but subjected passengers to local quarantine procedures. While the U.S. government has evacuated some cruise ship passengers in recent weeks, repatriation flights should not be relied upon as an option for U.S. citizens under the potential risk of quarantine by local authorities.

This is a fluid situation. CDC notes that older adults and travelers with underlying health issues should avoid situations that put them at increased risk for more severe disease. This entails avoiding crowded places, avoiding non-essential travel such as long plane trips, and especially avoiding embarking on cruise ships. Passengers with plans to travel by cruise ship should contact their cruise line companies directly for further information and continue to monitor the Travel.state.gov website and see the latest information from the CDC

The State Department posted this on March 5th...before Disney's announcement. Not sure what that even means. The State Department is "recommending" not "banning". I guess I still just wait and see.

It's more travel at your own risk, mostly for the cruises that have gotten stuck in quarantine for days or denied docking at the ports. (Which is a risk right now, particularly for one way repositioning cruises)

Unfortunately the US govt has not been very consistent with their public statements or the approach on how to address this crisis. Personally I think the response has further endangered us and especially on cruise ships. By quarantining ships they have made them Petri dishes put all passengers and crew in greater danger. Being quarantined with sick people is not the way to keep people safe.

Any good business has insurance to help mitigate losses in these situations. The people who will be hurt the most are the employees who will be furloughed while cruises are shut down.
Most insurance policies exclude this kind of thing. I agree the employees will be hurt most, but the companies won’t fare well either.

And companies like Disney, do not get "most insurance policies." Anything is insurable (if you are big enough, and have enough $$$, Disney falling well into that category), and I would be very surprised to find out that DCL (and every other major cruise line for that matter) doesn't have a policy that covers interruption of business due to a pandemic. (Note- said policy probably wouldn't cover all losses, and would likely have a limited time-frame, but it would definitely soften the blow).

Agree 100%. I am so disappointed with how the response is being executed - its like we had a practice drill with H1N1 & should have been so prepared for this. I hope when the dust settles, major process improvements are implemented & taken out of the political realm. The CDC, Surgeon General etc should be APOLITICAL.

Also - the cruise ships need to own some of this too - perhaps their "home port" or whatever they call it - should have a dedicated clinic\hospital-like that could house a certain percentage of sick crew & passengers? Perhaps it could double as a community clinic when there are no outbreaks - but go into full medical mode (like an old MASH unit) when an outbreak occurs?

I’m generally not a worrier, but with that CDC recommendation I would probably cancel our summer cruise.

I’d hope For a refund not a credit. We’ve got all our vacation money tied up in the cruise. I don’t have another summer vacation budget.

I dont but cancel for any reason insurance as I generally don’t cancel for “any reasons”.

We're cruising on the Magic in April. We're not in the vulnerable category, so not worried about it. Plus, we're just going to Key West and the Bahamas, and Key West is our first port. I won't be too disappointed if we have to skip Nassau.

I very much doubt the cruise industry can continue operations, another one has now been refused docking. Other governments may give the same advice as the US government. Customer bookings will be falling off a cliff now, and cancellations through the roof. Th cruise lines will I would guess cut their losses and dock the ships until summer.

I felt the same way as you......
until just Sunday morning -

that will cause people like you and I to have to be quarantined for 14 days ish to prove we our negative in test results.....

Got up to 300 more hours in your work "Vacation bank" to use up if you are quarantined ??
or worse?
GET READY for this risk as I know of at least two smart people making poor DCL and or travel decisions that is just going to make this virus continue - even into next year.

and the USA begins Corona virus testing this week -

Common sense should prevail here and yet people are making light of this subject -
Believe me you -
I love all things Disney....
but not to the point of being quarantined due to others making poor travel decisions.
and its Children of Grace who run the risk of missing work because of this (just because they got a "cool deal" of a free DCL veranda upgrade) who really need to rethink their motives / rationale.

Again, just my .02 worth
