The star wars spoiler thread

Frozen singlehandedly disproves this theory. It was in theatres for like 5 months and was pretty strong for like 4 of them, gaining steam for like two straight months before leveling off.

Frozen is an animated movie which tend to have very different rules.

Avatar and Titanic are both over 6 years old now. A lot has changed in the market since then. Both were "surprise" successes that did not have the initial quick burn. Avatar was the first big 3D blockbuster, and the 3D blu-ray was released almost a year after the movie came out (in fact, it had a 3D only re-release in August 2010 - 4 months after the DVD came out!). Plus, you have international growth of at home viewing options...

On the flip side, you have overall growth of the market... so its a quicker, faster burn... then a flip to DVD quickly. Its just a very different market.

This is the crux of the whole argument.

The "prequels" felt nothing like the originals to many of us. I thought it was a poorly thought caricature of Star Wars in general. The original movies had action Heroes with a little bit of depth to the characters in a relatable way...

The prequels were almost an intentional attempt at the opposite. Taking the "serious" or "tragic" parts of the story and dumbing it down for child consumption.

So...Disney and Abrams made and had to contend with a movie that is a big part "damage control"

Which is ridiculous if you think about it...but that is EXACTLY what it is.

And I saw it the 2nd time yesterday and liked it ALOT more...it was an enjoyable movie without the prequel angst to contend with anymore.

Did you see where Lucas got all pissy hating Disney for the new movie, complaining about how they sold out to make the fans happy? He still thinks his prequels were works of art and the rest of us just didn't get it.

Anyway.... We watched the original trilogy again this week, ending with Jedi on Wednesday. I hadn't seen Jedi in awhile, as it's not my favorite. Then we saw TFA for a third time last night. I actually think TFA is a better movie than ROTJ.

I'm glad you enjoyed it more the second go round!

We haven't mentioned this, so just to keep numbers up to date:
$22.9 Million Domestically yesterday. Total is $651.9 putting it less than $1 Million behind Jurassic... so, by now its officially #2 domestically. How big of a weekend? Does it have a 3rd weekend in a row of $100 million?

Internationally, $1.3 Billion... potential to catch Jurassic this weekend putting it at #3 all time (bit of a stretch, but it might make it).

Edit: Adding projections. $104 Million is the weekend projection. $651.9 + $104 is $756 Million... besting Avatar's $749 domestic record.

Just got home from seeing it, after having spent the last week re-watching 1-6. I really really enjoyed it. And while I am one to re-watch movies I like, I have never gone to see a movie twice in the theater, but for this one, I just might. Saw it at the IMAX at World Golf Village, and it was SPECTACULAR!

Now the #2 North American movie of all time - so long, Titanic- after crushing the New Years record.

Will pass avatar by mid this week if not sooner.

1.4 billion and climbing. It will
Like pass 2...but 2.7 is a big longshot now.

yep
needs to do another billion internationally at least

The big difference here is longevity. While Avatar made a far larger % internationally it took much much longer (there was even a re-release boosting those numbers a little). If you look at the week by week numbers Avatar's total wasn't that impressive at this point in its run. If TFA stays on screens into March then it beats the record, otherwise I don't see it.

Geez heard an interesting story line rumor but prob old news.

Have to say we LOVED it. I say a huge kudos to Disney, for making the movie feel like the ORIGINAL Star Wars movies, instead of like what they did with Episodes I, II, III. We've watched it twice now in theatre, the second time taking the kids.

DH thinks that Rae is Luke's daughter - picking up on the symbolism of how she was dropped off just like Luke & Leia were.

Perhaps it was the fact that the lightsaber called her to it...and that yoda and Obiwan kenobi spoke to her during the flashback?

Doesn't seem to make her "somebody's" kid...

Maybe she's Jedi master sipha dyas's niece?

To me, the fact that the light saber called to her, makes it far more likely that she is Luke's daughter - considering that the light saber belonged to Darth and Luke. Only makes sense that it would call to her - a direct descendant.

I was never much of a Star Wars fan until I saw TFA on New Years Eve. I'm now infatuated with the series (took me long enough to get into it...).

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turned out she was Luke's daughter. Seems to me like that's where they're heading with her.

I saw it in 3D last weekend and really enjoyed it despite the fact that it walked a fine line between sequel and reboot. I loved all the new heros. Rey, Finn, and Poe were all awesome from the get go. I even really enjoyed BB-8 and Maz, despite being prepared not to. The only really sour note for me was Kylo. I'm glad to see there are others here who felt the same way (I was beginning to think I was the only one). For me it was not the idea of him being an unfinished villain, I just felt he was horribly miscast. When he first took off the mask, it threw me right out of the movie. I hadn't seen him before and all I could think was 'This is what the child of Han and Leia looks like? Um, no.' He unfortunately reminded me instantly of the whiny prince in Braveheart which did not help me take him seriously. I know other people felt he did a fabulous job of conveying being conflicted between dark and light but I just didn't feel it at all. To me it just came across as 'I'm mad at my dad for sending me to Jedi boarding school so now I'm going to the dark side.' I'm going to see it again and hopefully he'll grow on me. Whiny isn't a complete kiss of death (you can't get any whinier than 'But Uncle Owen, I wanted to go to Toshi station to pick up some power converters'). We'll see. It's interesting though that he seems to either really work or really not work for people.

I'm also finding all the attention paid to Carrie Fisher aging like a human being interesting. Especially given that Hamill does not look any less his age and even movie star Harrison is pretty 'scruffy looking' at this point. It seems like a total double standard. I wish the fanboys would leave her alone. She has been so funny and open in the interviews she's given and I think she made a credible General Leia despite being given pretty crappy lines. My fear is that given all the esteem issues she's had, she'll decide that all this isn't worth another million and sit the next movies out. Growing up in the 80's with few strong, interesting female characters, Leia is my Disney Princess. My kids play Elsa and Anna on the playground, I grew up playing Princess Leia. And Carrie Fisher is Leia. And she's still awesome - bikini ready or not.

Since we're sharing guesses, DS says Kylo needs to kill someone he loves (like Anikan killed his wife? I don't remember that even) in order to become a Sith and eventually become strong enough to kill Snoke. Not sure if that would be rule in his place or save the galaxy from him.

$34.4 million Friday.. Domestic take of $686 making it officially number 2.

Anakin didn't kill his wife. She died following child birth. Anakin had completely turned to the dark side before she died.
