The star wars spoiler thread

Yes, but at the time of Return of the Jedi, Leia was pretty much the only other human woman in the galaxy, at least that's how it seemed from the movies. ;)
She wore the most important piece of swimwear of the decade...

The 70's had Cheryl Tiegs...we had Carrie fisher.

I don't see this as a reboot at all. Yes, there are some similarities to Star Wars & TESB, but I believe that was done more to remind/reinforce that this is Star Wars and not Political Theatre anymore. And that is very import to all involved, to get away from complicated storylines and back to fast paced action.

The pacing and the acting in this movie is great, very easy to watch over and over again. Kylo Ren is a great character, very complex with his internal struggles and need to live up to his grandfather. I know everyone figured this was it for Han, but I thought that scene was great, and there was enough drama for there to be some doubt as to the outcome there.

Rey/Finn had a great dynamic between them, and Han was very good in this movie. I didn't really get much from Poe, but he's likely to be more involved going forward. I did really enjoy the stolen tie fighter scene and also the first scene with the falcon, great action.

The things that I was slightly disappointed in were pretty much only the small significance of Captain Phasma & the lack of new ships. I do think the focus on TIE's, X-Wings, Star Destroyers, & the Falcon were intentional though, again to put emphasis back on Star Wars and the originals. They didn't want to stray too much from what worked for this first one, for fear of being associated moreso on the prequels with all of their fancy ships and gadgets.

The only thing I wished for though, was that Starkiller Base was disabled and not destroyed. Would be interesting to see what would come of it with stored energy it couldn't use. Would it be abandoned by the First Order? Try to fix it? Fall into the hands of another set of baddies?

As for Rey, probably Luke's daughter but it was best to leave open ended... builds the anticipation for VIII.

It's technically a sequel the follows the pattern of a reboot almost exactly under a thin veil.

Because you have two minority and a female lead (in the US...at least)...doesn't make it not a reboot.

I went opening Friday and yesterday, both at the same time frame. last night was actually more crowded, which surprised me. When I went the opening Friday it was not sold out (close but not quite sold out). When I went yesterday it was sold out before I arrived (which was close to an hour before the show was to start). I get that there was less shows yesterday for Star Wars than that opening Friday, but it still surprised me to see it more crowded on Day 10 on a Tuesday than on day 1 on a Friday. To add to it, even though it was a 3:00 showing, there was still more older people there than kids that are out of school (seemed a great mix of men and women too...would be real interested to know if the percentage of men to woman has gotten more even than it was the first day when it was 58-42).

I think this movie will have legs. I am surprised how many people have seen it. I went with two people yesterday who had never seen any of the other star wars (both woman) and both loved it. I didn't know neither had never seen a star wars movie before last night. Certainly my small sample size isn't an indication of the whole population, but it sure seems like it is pointing to this movie having a marathon ahead of it. I don't think typical projection analysis will work on this movie, it is creating a new curve for movies to want to follow (but then again I didn't follow the numbers that close when Avatar and Titantic came out as I am now).

I went past two theaters at 6:30
Last night and they were absolutely PACKED.

I doubt people were taking in Road Chip on a Tuesday...

Did we get numbers for yesterday yet?

I just checked mojo and it isn't up yet.

The takes are likely going to grow throughout the week/weekend.

It was estimated yesterday that Disney feels that the US record will fall this weekend. That's a stretch but possible.

The projection is for it to hit $600 million off Tuesday's box office. At which point it needs $161 million to take the record, with a holiday weekend ahead. Yeah it's doable.

I have to admit I'm one of those (46 yo) who hadn't seen many of the previous Star Wars movies but I really enjoyed this one! It was really good and it seemed that time just flew by. I love the female heroine too!

We are on a DCL cruise in February that is a Star Wars cruise. I'm not dressing up or anything but I am looking forward to seeing the movie again

Again, I don't believe thats the case. I think the similarities are to project a sense of this is Star Wars, not the prequels. I'm not denying the similarities, but there was a ton of new that makes this story stand on its own. The similarities serve to connect this movie to the original trilogy and distance itself from the prequels more than to reboot the originals.

If the story didn't stand on its own, the movie wouldn't be bringing in the volume that it has. The public was thirsting for more good Star Wars, but a reboot of the originals wouldn't have played this well.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your comments or their motives.

But the "built in" excuse that they HAD to do a reintroduction due to flaming prequels or the 40 year timeframe is simply not accurate. They could have gone more original but were afraid or made a calculated decision not to.

The originals were so great that they just put a new theme on top of it using current popular cultural themes, and kept the rest the same. You Know, kinda like Maelstrom changing to Frozen. (hahaha... just poking the bear now...) :D

Doable? I think the domestic record is a foregone conclusion. Its still making $30m on weekdays, these psst two days. Its probably gonna add over $50m between Wednesday & Thursday, then most likely a $75m+ weekend before school starts back up in many places Monday. The movie will like be run through February at least. The domestic record is theirs for the taking, probably before MLK day.

I'm putting my money on the Rey is Luke's daughter theory.

They could pull a swerve, but that's definitely what I thought the movie wanted me to think and the other scenarios just seem too much like hard work.

This is also what I am going with. One of the interesting things that I haven't seen talked about is after Kylo tried to read Rey's mind he says he sees an island, which we find out is where Luke is. How would Rey know this? Clearly shows some connection to Luke.

I have to admit though the final Rey finding Luke on the island ending was a bit of an anti climax for me. That scene was filmed on a real island called Skellig Michael off the south west coast of Ireland, near where my dad is from. It was huge local news when they were filming as that island is a nature preserve. There was lots of media reports of Mark Hamill having fun with the locals, even pulling pints in the local bar but there was no sightings of any other famous person and they were not there for long.

I was responding to the idea they could hit that record by the end of this weekend though...

That was one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie. The beauty of that island took my breath away.

3D versus normal 2D. Has anyone viewed both? A few of my relatives saw the 3d version and said that the 3d element was disappointing, but thought it could have been an issue with that particular theater. They enjoyed the story/movie, just not the format.

I saw both, enjoyed both. I didn't have any issues with the 3D version at our theater.

Well I saw it for the second time last night.
It's official, add me to the camp who enjoyed it even more the second time and I've moved away from it's a total reboot to wow there's a lot to the story with great potential for future episodes.
By the way, the show was sold out and the guy sitting next to me, who I don't know, turned to me at the end and said I don't want it to end. I would also guess the range of ages was 10-70, give or take.
