The star wars spoiler thread

So I'm lucky enough to have a theater that shows the film in the 70 mm I Max. I'm planning on seeing it there, (it is sold out till Jan 1st) Is it just the definition of the film that is improved? I have never seen an I Max movie.

Screen size and format as well as resolution. It's an experience. You have to move your head to take in all the action.

She IS the awakening of the Force, .

I was kind of thinking the awakening was with Finn, when Kylo walks by him at the slaughter and stops and stares at him. Which would also explain why he was somewhat good with a light saber. I'm pretty sure they did not train storm troopers on how to handle light sabers

And the records keep falling. Biggest domestic Monday at $40.1 million vs. the previous record holder Spider-Man 2 at $27.6 million.

More importantly Box Office Mojo says the movie is tracking like Avatar in terms of drop off. In which case they project $500 million domestic by Saturday making it the fastest to $500 million (about have the time it took Jurassic World to do that). I'd say it's just a matter of time now before Avatar falls to number 2.
domestically i agree
internationally it will be much harder

Went to get tickets. Everything tonight sold out at 3 theaters. Everything after 4 tomorrow sold out. Everything Thursday sold out. Some availability on Friday afternoon.

That's word of mouth business...not advertising effect now.
Nothing like what you saw with the prequels.

Flaws aside...the masses are embracing this thing as one of the best Star Wars.

And this is also a template...because a movie hatched right in the biggest western holiday has never been seen like this and will be very tough to top.

Do you think some people held out on seeing it until they received feedback on how good/bad the movie was, since the prequels were so awful?

I think most people (or at least the ones I know going later) planned to wait out the opening weekend crazyness. I was originally in that camp until I heard the reviews. I had to go Sunday... Couldn't wait it out.

Honestly...I thought about it. Even though I had first showing tickets...

I wasn't sure I'd go until the rotten tomatoes score came up.

Was $46 worth avoiding mass disappointment if it was awful?

Hell yes.

But $40 mil on Monday, dec 21 is just massive. People made a conscious effort to alter their lifestyle to go to the movies that day.

If you have to pick a scene of the "awakening"...it's the last one.

But you'll never convince me that the title isn't a backhanded slight at Lucas meant for the original fans

We sure did.... My husband worked from home and we sent our 4 year old to Grandma's Monday so we could have a long lunch date at the movies! Saw it the first time Friday night. Enjoyed the movie even more the second time! It will never be the original trilogy, but it was what I needed after the embarrassment of 1-3.

I just kept thinking, George Lucas did not write or direct this film. There is no way it's going to be as terrible as the prequels.

I am thinking the same. I feel Finn has more to do with the force than we have been lead at this point.

They may be setting Finn up to be a larger presence, but I kept feeling like he was the simple storm trooper that happen to have a conscience and is now naive to everything. Kind of like the kid in a candy store.
That may be exactly what Abrams wanted me to think... And then, WHAM!, he's the next Jedi master.

Sounds like I need to see the movie again to sort it all out. :-)

I agree about Luke... JJ Abrams said he kept trying to figure out how to insert Luke into the movie, and it just never worked. No matter what he tried. I'm hoping there's room for him in the next film.

I actually think that it was a good thing that Luke was not in this movie. Having the complete original cast in this movie would have taken too much screen time from the new cast, unless they tried to pull a Lord of the Rings move by making a movie that was almost 3 hours long. For this particular movie, Han was a large focal point. In the next movie, I can totally see Luke having a very large role with Leia having a reduced role again. What I will be curious to see is if Luke makes it into the 3rd film in this new trilogy. How much would anyone bet that he is a force ghost by the time the 3rd film roles around. That way, they can focus completely on the new cast for the final film.

I did. After running out to see Phantom Menace, I decided I would never do that again.

This time around, I made til Sunday night!

I agree completely... There really wasn't room for Luke in TFA. Plus it was great for Han to have a prominent role considering what happens.

I just told my husband I'd be shocked if Luke doesn't end up as a force ghost. I hope I'm wrong though.

Not getting the same vibe with that character...I think they will mirror yoda more than kenobi with him through these next 3 movies...wizard master somewhere on his own once the story arc ends.

But we'll see. Luke really can't "die" even if he is dead...as we have seen.

Just like Alec Guiness called star wars "rubbish" in 1978...he had some of the key scenes in 1980 and 1983...actually did a better job at the prequel stories in about 90 seconds than corporate George 15 years later...

So as long as the money was green, right?
I guess...
