The star wars spoiler thread

They may be setting Finn up to be a larger presence, but I kept feeling like he was the simple storm trooper that happen to have a conscience and is now naive to everything. Kind of like the kid in a candy store.
That may be exactly what Abrams wanted me to think... And then, WHAM!, he's the next Jedi master.

Sounds like I need to see the movie again to sort it all out. :-)

I heard someone make the interesting suggestion that Finn could turn out to be a Spartacus like character, helping to turn other Stormtroopers against the First Order.

Shall we just goahead and pre-post this:

Star Wars breaks Wednesday record
Star Wars breaks Thursday record
Star Wars breaks Christmas day record

It will save time. :D
we should start placing bets on these things ;)

At this point I think the only real question is how quickly it hits $1 billion international and $500 million domestic. I'm saying this weekend.

It's at 325 at end of Tuesday.

Assuming it keeps 35 a day through Friday that's another 105... 430 after Friday. Safe bet $500 this weekend. Can it do $500 before Saturday? Doubtful but in the realm of possible. It'd need to do a little over $50 day. Not sure it can.

So Saturday or Sunday for $500? I say Sunday.

Cultural differences. Christmas is a bigger deal as a family holiday in the UK compared to in the US where they have Thanksgiving for that.
While Christmas Day is a big movie day in the US, Christmas Eve is one of the worst Days of the year according to Deadline Hollywood News. So bad that the norm for theaters has been to close early for the day. According to Deadline, there were no plans as of now to change that this year with Star Wars. So, expect Christmas Eve to be light and Christmas Day to have monster numbers.

I'm just gonna drop this in here for discussion, because I can't come up with any nifty theories about it - but Maz Kanata's name immediately reminded me of the great Samba tune "Mas que nada" which is a near homophone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mas_que_Nada

Reading the wikipedia entry, I lean toward the Spanish translation ("more than anything") rather than the Brazilian equivalent of "Whatever".

Help me out here...

^ I ran out with a buddy to see Phantom Menace opening night. I left completely in a daze. Unable to determine if I liked it because it was Star Wars on the big screen again, or if it was a good story. Went back three days later to watch it again, and decided I did not like it. My fondness of the prequels did grow through Episodes II and III, not to the level of the originals, but I found the last two episodes tolerable.

When I left the theater this past Sunday, there was a lack luster round of applause (theater was 1/3 full for an 8:15 showing), when the credits rolled. Kind of how I felt too. Yay, it's a new Star Wars, but it was missing something. I can't put my finger on it yet. And I saw the big spoiler coming five miles out, so that didn't do anything for me. I will say the emotions portrayed by Adam Driver in that scene were excellent. Overall I thought this cast surpassed the prequel cast by leaps and bounds.

We had a full theater Sunday morning and many people stood up and cheered. Quite a bit of applause. I guess it's all about the mix. The movie was great and it did the best thing it could. It left me wanting more.

What was "missing" was a lack of originality at really any part of the story.

That was my first take..."did they have to steal everything?" Rey is really the only original take...but she's a Jedi kid - which has been done enough.

The other thing missing was new cool
Toys...as in it was stormtroopers, tie fighters and xwings...

No fleets, vehicles, new wrinkles to like really...
All old hat.

BUT...I wanted to see what's next. That is the natural advantage over prequels...you knew what was coming and instead harped on all the story mistakes and terrible acting.

There were no mistakes and most acting was great. But it was the same story so there really couldn't be a mistake.

I mean...trench runs?

If they hadn't already eliminated that for much cooler in Jedi that would be one thing...but...

It still does its job overall.

Other then the new Imperial Shuttle, and Rey's speeder, yeah.....nothing new. I kept waiting to see a new A, B or Y wing. Maybe the Resistance doesn't bomb. LOL.

I'd agree with you on the ending. I was very, we've already done this twice (three times if you want to count Episode I's ending too), really J.J.????

I will say that after Episode I, I did want to see the next Episode ASAP, and the same after Episode II. Then again, I felt the same way after Jurassic Park - give me more!!!
