The Running Thread --2025

From the more experienced athletes on here, how bad of an idea would it be to sign up for a summer triathlon (my first even, so might end up being a sprint tri) when I'm planning on running the NYC marathon next year?
It’s a good idea. The swimming and cycling will give you additional fitness with less risk of injury over pure running. Go for it!

Who is running the Atlanta Half on Thanksgiving? please let me know your start time ish and pace ish.

tagging those i think might be doing it or i am sure are.

@Disney at Heart @princesspirateandrunner @BigEeyore @Mr. lncredible
We are not running it. The only time we did that one, it was 23 degrees and miserable (2013). We are leaving Friday for Cocoa Beach, because DH is running the Space Coast Marathon on Sunday.

I hope it’s a good event! Have you done that one before?

I have not done it as it did not line up well with Marathon weekend for me. Now with the knee it definitely does not line up well. I know @Disney at Heart and DH do it every year. We live close to Piedmont Park so i usually try and get out there with Whisky. Whisky likes this race better than PTRR, in the park you do not have all the loud noises.

There’s a Thanksgiving 8k in Athens that is fun to do, and we’ve done it multiple times. We won’t do it this year because of going to Space Coast the next day. We’re also trying to avoid crowds now to avoid catching anything before we go. This is the last race of the current Space Coast series, so maybe we’ll go back to the 8k next year. That’s a good distance on Thanksgiving morning, and DH does enough commuting to Midtown to not want to do it on a morning he doesn’t have to.

I’ll be interested to hear what the Atlanta one is like these days. I definitely understand why Whisky wouldn’t enjoy the screaming at P’tree. 🙂

Yes we will be there, starting in Wave C about 7:50 and will probably be in Piedmont Park somewhere around 9:00-9:10ish. We will look for you! It’s going to be COLD. I ran in shorts Saturday, but with a low on the 30’s, I be bundled up in fleece!

Anyone had the flu lately and kept feeling crappy after the fever and aches were gone? Got the flu about 9 days ago. Fever broke last Tuesday night. A week later and I am still feeling some lingering effects. My chest hurts in the mornings and still have a lingering cough with that lovely junk that comes up. Sometimes I feel a little achy, but then that comes and goes. But really just overall feeling lethargic. Running mileage has definitely taken a dive through this. I should be almost up to 20 miles for my Dopey training, but feel like I have taken some big steps backwards. I did a short 4 mile run last Friday. Sunday I got in 8 miles. I feel like I almost need to start putting in double days of running to try to get endurance back up. Looks like there may be no taper for me before MW. Going to be trying to increase mileage as much as possible up to New Years.

healthy and a little under-trained > run-down and fully-trained

With the usual caveat of I’m not a medical professional - I’ve had the flu three times in my life, and COVID once: every one of those developed secondary bronchitis, and twice pneumonia because I didn’t take time to rest and recover properly. I have permanent lung damage as a result, which is not fun. I’d be very, very cautious of pushing through with a wet cough plus chest pain.

I don't think there's any need to try and catch up especially if you're not aiming to PR. Better to rest until you're feeling better. The miles will come back quickly. I got up to 18 miles before getting covid over Thanksgiving before my first Dopey and barely ran after and it was fine. I think the longest I ran that December was 8 miles. I would probably just rest a few more days until you hopefully feel 100% and then ease back into your regular runs (maybe walk some of the miles if you need to). Two weeks won't lose you much fitness.
