The Running Thread --2025

i got rid of garmin after that worldwide crash a few years ago that turned out to be a huge security breach. when i started back in training last december, i broke down and got another one. turns out that was a mistake. this is the second worldwide outage from their stupidity since i put the damned thing back on my wrist.

garmin is straight up trash. they simply cannot hit the minimum standard of reliability with their products. sending this piece of junk back and finding something that isn't useless on a monthly basis.

Lol, sort of sounds like me years ago, even without the global outages. I had all sorts of issues with a Garmin and charging, and their support was completely useless.

Personally, I moved over to Coros (using the Pace 2 at the moment). They don't go as deep with the non-athletic type features, i.e. music/streaming apps, like a more smartwatch type device. But, for me, I just wanted something that was all about tracking, and the GPS signal acquiring seemed light years faster than any other watch I had tried.

i legitimately regret not trying Coros when i decided i needed a better device for training. like you, i really dont need the bells and whistles, just the basic data and delivered with reliability. garmin's devices might be solid but their operations are purely bush league.

Is anyone having trouble with their Garmin? It’s been crashing on me all morning and I’ve had to reset it like five times.
Yes, me too. I went out for a run at lunch and went to start my activity and it went to the blinking triangle. After doing a hard restart, I try to do activity again, and it goes back to the triangle. I was actually just coming here to see if anyone else is having issues. I believe you and I have the same model.

I was able to log my run, but it crashed when I tried to start a walk, and again when I tried to power it off. Haven't had any issues since mid-morning, but haven't tried to do any activities, either.

Garmin's response:

We are aware of an issue causing some devices to be stuck on the start up screen or a blue triangle. To resolve this, press and hold the power button until the device turns off, then power it back on, and sync with the Garmin Connect app or Garmin Express. If this does not resolve your issue, Please click here for more information.

QOTD for my fellow Masters: if you are an older runner, how have you changed your approach to training?
Define "masters" age group for me... north of mid 50's or more right?!?!?! Because at 41, I am not considering myself in the masters age group or near it. Based on my last half marathon, and how I ranked I am in the top 1/3 of my piers but I am a faw ways away from the top. I refuse to say I have peaked for now lol.

ATTQOTD: I didn’t start running until just before I turned 40. And then, the faster I tried to get, the more injured I became. Frustrating! In my fifties, I have found that I max out at three runs a week. Usually two hour long runs and one longer on the weekend. This is partially because I do NOT love running and also because I enjoy OTHER activities. There are only so many physical things this body can do!

I moved to run/walk a few years back and like it. I can tweak the intervals for variety. One upside I’ve discovered is that I absolutely CAN run continuous and be pretty successful if that is a goal. But, after being sidelined and not able to run at all, I decided it’s more important TO ME to keep running lighter and for longer. This has mostly worked. I’ve also found chiro and massage became much more necessary in the post 50 years. The same can be said for recovery time. More is better

Best advice for Masters and beyond.....if LIFE stress is high, body stress needs to be low. And vice versa.

I’ve got some good news and some bad news. First, the masters category is only reserved for the elderly and decrepit—so 40, but if you reach 50 or 60, you get to be a grand master. If you are the fastest in that category, you earn the title Grand Master Flash.

The bad news is that aging is not linear, but occurs in a series of rapid waves around age 44 and then age 60. So gather ye rosebuds while ye may, because the joys of middle age come hard and fast.

Grand master! I thought that was a joke when someone else mentioned it.
Also, DH will attest to a metaphorical cliff at 60. This is someone that does not enjoy running mind you, but he agrees with this article from experience.

Same here! I need more walking than running, but also need the running parts to be higher intensity: slow jogging kills my joints. So overall I’m doing less in terms of time and mileage, but at a higher intensity - and it feels so much better.

I’ve never wavered from doing ST regularly, but was getting bored with my routine lately, so I went on a YouTube search for inspiration - I stumbled onto a 20-minute Prehab for Runners from Run Better with Ash and I REALLY like it! Throwing it out there in case you want to take a look.
I got the same recommendation in YouTube.. this channel has good videos to follow along

Does anyone know how long a resort will hold a package for? I want to buy Crowned Athletics for this coming Princess and am wondering if I can order now or if I should wait a bit

(@flav I found your question from last year haha but no one replied?)

ATTQOD: uff I am 51 and not to be repetitive but knee issue went full force last year. I am still comparing myself to my past self, which I just need to stop. Prior to 50, occasional strength training and 5 days a week running, about 35 miles a week. Now I strength training 3 days a week and cut running to 3 days a week, about 15 miles a week. It sucks but the option is that or quickly it will be nothing.

I also have an insane amount of life stress. I am not the person or runner I want to be but it’s the best I got right now.

Twice I ordered items that were delivered more than a week before our arrival at a Disney resort. One was 2’x1’ but thin and arrived 11 days before us and the other was a small package that arrived 29 days before us. In both case the resort held them.
Is this what you found? I was answering someone else question. The resorts state one week but there is a bit of leeway.

ATTQOTD: I didn't start running until I was 45 and my training has been all over the place. When I did focus and really try to get faster, I got overuse injuries and backed off. Things generally went okay for someone who really doesn't LOVE running until I hit the perimenopause wall a few years ago (I just turned 54 last month). Now I'm finding my endurance really tanks if I slack off on strength training. I build in more rest after super long runs and hard workouts. I also am sure to do dynamic stretching warmups and static stretching after cooling down from every run. I'll add rolling and theragun late in a training cycle or after a particularly long run.

I've resolved I'm just not going to get much better at this running thing, but would rather do it and stay active than the alternative. My mom is my cautionary tale. She was never an active person and has had both knees replaced yet still relies on a scooter to get just about anywhere. If she has to walk more than 50 feet or take any stairs, it's out of the question. So many things she'd like to do are just off the table now. It is sad, and I don't ever want to be in that position.

DM was never particularly active but always thin. Then she quit smoking and put on about 150 extra pounds. She went on every fad diet under the sun but always gained everything back. I got her to sign up for a Disney 5K in 2017, which I hoped would be motivation to move. She did lightly train by walking her neighborhood a few times a week, which wasn't a ton but way more than she'd ever done. She finished in about 90 minutes, had a great time, and I thought maybe that was a turnaround. But she reverted right back to doing nothing and then had her first knee replacement. She felt good enough afterward to commit to another 5K, but then didn't train at all. She nearly didn't show up, but my aunt (her sister) and I convinced her to at least start and we walked it with her. She finished DFL after a golf cart assist, but it was a huge struggle. She hated it and basically stopped even trying after that. It's super sad and frustrating knowing she had the power to prevent a lot of her issues and just did not.

Use it or lose it, as they say. And I'm going to keep using it as best I can until I physically can't.

Attqotd- I started running at 45, and was beat up at the time. Not from being out of shape, but because I have used and abused every part of my body at work and play my whole life. I always had a physical job, a house to maintain and hobbies like skiing, hiking, hunting, racing off-road vehicles, and would generally function on a few hours of sleep to get it all in without sacrificing family time. Now at 53 I’m running 5/week for a minimum of 30 miles/week and am in some form of pain that I’m used to 24/7, but I’m still improving. When I start to get different pains I guess is when I’ll slow down. Hopefully that isn’t any time soon but you never know so for now I’ll keep pushing myself.
Have to enjoy whatever life we’re given.
