The Running Thread --2025

How’s everyone’s calendar this year?
Doing any new to you races or distances?
Racing them or just for fun?
I'm trying to fall back in love with running this year, so lots of runs with my club and racing for fun (and time). I'm signed up for the BAA Medley, which will be goal races. I might also add the Boston 10k for Women and some local small 5ks.
Edit to add: I signed up to volunteer at the Boston Marathon, so we'll see if that comes through. I won't be running but thought it would be a fun way to get involved with the event. I'll likely go down and spectate for it even if I don't get a shift.
Good luck! I hope you get in for volunteering. It's so much fun.

January Totals:
Running - 104.7 Miles or 26.2 avg weekly. Its a sign I tell you!
Two races: 1-4-25 Wilderness 10 Miler - 1:31:30 and 1-19-25 Louisiana Half Marathon - 1:54:38.
Overall a good month leading into what will be a challenging February of training.

Happy running everyone!

January- 89 miles

My weight is firmly in the mid-250s, and feeling confident about getting back into the 240s in February. I have not been in the 240s since 2018. So, pretty stoked on that and the possibility of being in the 220s by my September half.

Psoas still has some occasional warmth to it, but I’m picking my speed up. It does persist in being very tight in double pigeon, but I’ll keep trying to limber it back up

I'm a grand master?! Soon to be a Senior Master?! I feel like I'm too young for either.
Denial, it's more than just a river....

January - 52.9 miles, which will likely have 2-3 more miles added this afternoon.
All of this has been 1 and 2 mile walks at a ~20 min/mile pace as part of ramping back up to running.
Wed afternoon, I did 3.57 miles on my neighborhood training course. Saw some of the other regular walkers/runners that I haven't seen in months. So I can do a 5K in terms of distance, but this was at an 18:45 pace, so it'll still be some months before I try a timed event. Progress.

As for ancestry and aging: My mom's dad died of lung cancer (chain smoker) at age 42, and I remember her being acutely aware of crossing that age milestone. Then she dies of colon cancer at age of 53, and in turn I was very aware of living past that age. FWIW, my dad made it to almost 82 before a series of strokes got him; hard to say how much of that can be attributed to a lot of sitting and watching TV during Covid.
The ex and I had our kids late, with my younger one about to 20 in a couple of months, and I was determined to be able to do things with my kids. That and wanting to outlive and be more active than my ancestors is part of what has me back to regular exercise and running. So far, so good....

January: A good month. Won the WDW "10k Marathon" in a world record time of 28:53..... (IYKYK)

But seriously, I have been out running 4 days/week following Coach Garmin in cold, snow, rain and everything else. Guess I should probably face my fear and sign up for the half that I told it I was doing. And wouldn't you know, it would be 2 days before MW registration, which I am most definitely not doing. Good thing I just booked us flights to FL on registration day to take in some spring training.

And on that note, it’s interesting that we were just discussing displaying medals and the quality of medals.
I have 40+ on display in my finished basement and the remainder of in a box…
In the closet…
With the water heater

Long story short, I’ve got a pile of ribbons for the dryer and a pile of medals to match up after. Everything 2024 and newer with the paint - don’t let them get wet, they are literally bubbling up and peeling. Oh well, I’ll dry em and put them in a new box, not under the heater.

Here we go again…

January Miles = 105

The majority of this month's miles came on or before Jan 12 (Dopey). I have done only a handful of slow short runs the rest of the month as it still feels like I am recovering. Mileage year over year has been decreasing and this may be the year I break my 100 miles per month streak which currently stands at 83 months. February would get me to 84 = 7 years but I always struggle getting to 100 in February due to lack of races to train for, awful weather and a short month.

2025 Total = 105

January running: 59.7

Took two weeks off after the Disney Marathon and just started running again this week. I have the Princess Challenge next month, then I plan to take another week off before figuring out what I want to focus on through Spring and Summer. I'm leaning towards focusing on speed work, because long runs + Florida summer do not mix, and I want to get faster before the next marathon.

January walking: 30-ish

I'm going to do another walk this afternoon to get at least 30 miles for the Garmin badge. I had planned to do a lot more walking during my two weeks off running, but Florida decided to have awful weather during that period of time, both cold and rainy.

January strength: 2hr 30 min (ish)

I need to do my arm workout this afternoon, but after that it should be about that total. I started strength training the week after the marathon, and so far, I've stuck to it! I'm doing legs on Monday, core on Wednesday, and arms on Friday. I have a list of exercises on my notes app and just follow those while listening to a podcast or watching TV. I found that just following a static list is easiest for me and I picked exercises targeted to runners.

>> Oh boy, on demand heater decided to give up so I get to play plumber for a couple days

Not so on demand then. (said with sympathies. I've had to do an emergency replacement before, and more recently had to replace an expansion tank that decided to start leaking)

So our medals are like gremlins: don't let them get wet....

January 2025

Running: 33h 26m, 213.9 miles
Strength/mobility: 7h 41m
Total: 41h 8m

And one (unofficial) mile PR! 🥳

I was planning to do a core workout this afternoon, but I am still super worn out from yesterday's workout (which included but was not limited to that mile PR). I think I will skip it and just hang out on the couch with my dog. So that's probably it for the month.

Edit: Oops, wrong year 😂

My half is the weekend after marathon weekend registration. I will be in crazy taper week mode and overly confident in my plan to run the WDW full marathon, without yet having to experience the pain of a hard race effort half the following Sunday. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

January Totals (including Dopey): 118km / 71 miles

Also took 2 weeks off after Dopey - got 3 runs in this week with today being both my longest (5 miles) since the marathon and first one outdoors as the cold seems to have taken a break and its sunny and just above freezing here.

1 month until training starts again....

January Miles

Just Dopey--49.64 miles in 12:40:57 (moving time) and 14:16:03 (overall time)

I was supposed to start a 10 week training plan this week that would take me into Springtime Surprise, but I got a wicked cold (but somehow not the influenza A my grandpa has), so I'm hoping I can start training next week.

January 2025 Running Total: Activities: 7 Distance: 42.34 mi Time: 7:26:44
This includes my first Marathon! and one 5k treadmill run 12 days post-marathon. The secret to making a 5k treadmill run seem super speedy is to preceed it with a marathon! 🤣

A look back at marathon training and the race.....
I completed a sixteen week training plan which included 4 or 5 weekly runs. I got a bad cold during the peak training weeks and I never recovered back up to the speed I had on my long runs before the illness. My longest run was 16.6 miles in week 11. (I had goals of that being 18 miles)
The intensity of the training plan made me want to eat a lot more carbs than usual and made me feel like i needed to cut back on strength training to have some more recovery time. I gained weight during training.
By race day I was very confident I could finish the marathon, but a bit unsure about what my time would be. In corral B I decided to start with the 4:30 pacing group. I knew their run Pace would be too fast for me so I didn't use intervals, I ran straight thru and leap frogged around them. I was happy to keep with them thru the half, then I took a potty break around mile 14, started fueling at that point too, and slowed down during the hydration stations to take Powerade & water. During the second half of the race when the course double backed, out of AK, and out of BB I slowed my pace looking at every person trying to see DH who stated in corral D. (I never saw him). After BB, my feet were hurting and I started 90/30 intervals. At the Boardwalk I started ditching every little piece of extra weight I was carrying to try to get me to that finish line easier.... gloves, un-eaten gels, headband. I was so happy to not run World Showcase at the end! Once I got backstage again I kept thinking, where is the choir? Then after then, where is the finish line? Finally in the chute, I saw my family and started crying again, swerved over to the far right side to high five Jeff Galloway and then to the finish!
I'm happy with the race and my time 4:43, thankful to DH for letting my join in on his bucket list idea. I think the training involved for this distance is more than I want to put my body thru again.

Looking forward.....
February includes a 4 week bench press focused strength program. So excited for that! I'm planning to run on at least two weekends for Garmin Badges and anything else will be weather/ health dependent.
I currently have no other races planned, but a Disney 10k is what is likely to catch my eye in the future.
