The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: I am running the 10k for Women Run the Cities in May and then jumping into marathon training for my first non-Disney marathon 😳 I said in the past I was done with the marathon but I badly want to complete one outside of Disney. So I’m signing up for the Twin Cities Marathon in October and am equally excited and scared about it!

Oooh, you're going to take the long way to the Capitol, while I take the shortcut. I hope we get nice weather!

ATTQOTD: Next up for me is the Princess Half, which I'm racing. (Yes, I know it's weird, but I actually like racing at Disney. Stopping for photos is fun too, but you get really good action shots when there's hardly anyone else around.)

After that, I'm looking at a local 5K in May where I might actually have a chance to "podium" depending on who shows up. (Last year only about 100 people ran it, and I'm pretty sure there aren't any actual prizes, but it would still be cool!)

In the fall I have the Marine Corps Marathon again, with the DC Half and Army Ten-Miler as training runs.

ATTQOTD:
We are signed up for Princess and Springtime Challenges. We are planning on signing up for W&D and I am very much looking forward to conquering the Dopey in January! We have a couple of small races we do locally, 5k and 10k, which are usually in October. Half tempted to try for the Broad Street run to see if I can get a good time. Depends on how the next two Disney race weekends, healing and training go. All in all, I am very much itching for the weather to not be so frigid so I can run more!

We are doing what?!?!? Who’s WE?!?!

ATTQOTD: my race calendar is looking pretty sparse this year. I have a local aquathon and sprint tri in Feb and a 70.3 in Mallorca in Oct. I’m sure I’ll do an Oceanman somewhere in between, but for now those are my only races. I do have a tri camp in Portugal in May and our annual European cycling trip in June giving me a few reasons to keep training, though.

If you're looking for a relatively big field, I can see three events near Montreal:

1) As @marty3d mentioned, the Tamarack Ottawa weekend at the end of May probably has the best ambiance and is the most inclusive. The city really comes out and encourages runners all along the course. To give you an idea, these are their HM pacers:
Continuous: 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 2:00, 2:05, 2:10, 2:15, 2:20, 2:30
Run Walk: 1:50, 2:00, 2:05, 2:10, 2:15, 2:30, 2:45
Walk: 3:15
It would be my #1 recommendation as well. It always occurs on a weekend where I'm unavailable, otherwise I would run it every year.

2) The Montreal Marathon weekend in mid September has the biggest field. Last year the weekend had over 20k runners. They have "combos" similar to runDisney where you can combine races but no challenge medal ;) It will probably sell out before the summer.

3) The Laval Firefighters Race in the first weekend of June. I've done it twice before since it's local to me. I won't do it again though: the course is difficult (net uphill) and it's competitive. I finished the half in 2:18 last year and was 1047 out of 1352 runners 😮 Very different to runDisney... There's no time limit though, the last runners finished in almost 4 hours.
Thank you!

So I registered for the Niagara 50K in June, which brings up a question (or two) of the day.
How’s everyone’s calendar this year?
I'm chopped up with the marathon early, (done check have a PR to beat now) and now training for a backpacking trip with DS16

I have halloween Half and Califorinia International Marathon (Full) later in the year
Doing any new to you races or distances?
Not after Marathon weekend which was my first full
Racing them or just for fun?
definitely Halloween half and CIM I'm trying to get closer to my 10 year old PR in half and set a new PR for full

@The Expert you’ve got a perfect answer from @azrivest

If you were looking at smaller races, these are well organized too.

And there is the one I was hoping to run but the half is already full for 2025 https://couronsmtl.com/21k/accueil/

I have DL next weekend; then Princess and then W&D… with a nice solid - base building in the summer :)

2025 goals: finishing the races without being swept LOL; and get a PR in the HM in W&D

Most importantly.. long term goals.. I want to do at least 5 Dopey s in the next 20yrs, one of those when I hit 70yrs old… so, keeping me healthy all along :)

ATTQOTD: My racing schedule for this year is completely up in the air at this point. Two weeks of rest has not improved my hamstring at all. I've got a PT appointment this week to put together a plan, but it's hard to see a rapid return to running this spring. My normal March ultra is out of the question, so I'll play it by ear and see when I can get back on the road and maybe target a May/June half, if possible.

ATTQOTD: I'm kind of in the same boat. After not running at all since the marathon, I tried an easy 20 minute run this week and could really feel it in my lower right hamstring. The earliest I could meet my PT is next Monday, and I'm going back to Orlando in 25 days for Princess Weekend 😬

ATTQOTD: full focus for this year is trying to get a sub 2:00 half, looks like that will start with a local half in April, possibly Brooklyn later that month (NYCRUNS version, not NYRR). Staten Island is a possibility, that would likely be the first fall race that makes sense for me and it's where I got my current best time.

On that note I might be in the market for a carbon plate sneaker, I know we’ve occasionally had this discussion here in the past but I might ask for opinions!

For the rest of the year, we are looking at a local Bunny Hop 5k, Peachtree Road Race 10K, and W&D all three. Any others are up in the air.
We still haven’t received our medals for the Atlanta Triple Peach for 2024, and this year the Atlanta 10 miler is the Sunday before Wine and Dine, so with timing and the mess last year we may not do the 10 miler or the Thanksgiving half in Atlanta for the first time in 10+ years. And after 47-48? years the Lake Hartwell Dam Run is still pending Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to replace turbines in the dam.

So DIS meetup at Ottawa Race Weekend? :)

Also - just put down my deposit on an international travel package for the NYC Marathon - I am more excited about this than any race since my first Dopey in 2022.

Seeing the dam turbines getting replaced would be cool (says the engineer....)

Goals for this year? Return to running, for starters. I've been doing 2.5-2.6 mile walks for the past week, at 18-19 min/mile paces, with no pain. The only "running" I've done is scooting across a busy road to get to the walking path. I think a few more weeks of walks, increasing to ~3.5 miles and longer strides and then towards the end of Feb I'll try some easy run/jogging. Ideally, I'd like to do a 10-miler in Columbus Ga in April as a POT for the 2026 Goofy, but hard to say at this time if I'll be sufficiently trained back up yet. After that comes the fall race season which will include a work 5K and my church's 5K, and hopefully a Thanksgiving half.

ATTQOTD: I've got Princess 10K coming up quickly! I'm running that with DH so that's a nice change of pace for me for a Disney race. Then I have NYC Half on March 16. I'm looking forward to actually trying to race a half for the first time in several years. I'll still be slow as molasses, but I'm interested to see how fast I can go.

After that, I'll probably do the NY State Parks Summer Series and maybe some small local races. Perhaps Cow Harbor 10K in September. Probably won't race in the fall if I sign up for Dopey.

>>. Probably won't race in the fall if I sign up for Dopey.
IMHO, having a fall half, 10-miler, or 10K makes for a good training target prior to MW, plus it acts as a measuring stick to see how your training is going.I
I agree. I know it’s different for everyone but the fact that I have a marathon in November is the only reason I’m considering running the marathon again in January next year.
