The Running Thread --2025

7 weeks out from Princess and I’ve had to reach out to a PT place. Thankfully it’s not for anything major, but my calves are giving my Achilles’ issues even after the strength training I’ve been doing. It’s time to check with a pro to see exactly what I need to be doing.

I have some gift cards I received during the Christmas season and I would like to buy myself some gloves for running. I live in PA and my hands are always cold. I can never find gloves that keep my hands warm. I've added some rechargeable hand warmers to my options this year, but I'm still looking for warmer gloves/mittens.

Any suggestions? For me, it's more important for them to be warm than to be streamlined.

@dobball23 Consider getting a glove/overmitt combo. I have some (at home, so don't know who) that are a fingerless glove with an overmitt.Use them when the real feel is near zero and they work well. Can pull a flap back and velcro if my hands get warm. The mitten feature of the fingers being together makes a big difference.

Recommend the Arcteryx Rho Glove to keep your hands toasty.

Thanks for the suggestion. If you remember when you get home, I'd love to know the specifics of the kind you have.

I have a pair of Saucony Run Mitts, that frankly, get too warm to wear when it's above 15-20 degrees. They don't make the model I have any more, but it looks like the ones they have now are similar. The Brooks Lobster Gloves are good too. Mittens (or even the lobster type) do a better job of staying warm than normal gloves.

I have a pair of Brooks mittens. They are OK, but my hands still get plenty cold. I'm not sure if they are the Lobster Gloves or another version.

I'll check out the current version of the Saucony Run Mitts.

Question for the Garmin experts. My last 2 runs my Garmin has been doing a weird thing, where for the first 20 minutes of my runs it reads my heart rate really low. I know for a fact that my heart rate was not that low, because it literally never is. Has anyone had that happen before? Or know what I can do to fix it? I tried tightening and loosening the watch band, with no difference. I have an Epix Pro if that matters.

I've had this happen before on my vivoactive 3 but sorry I don't have a fix per se. Garmin will think I have a really low HR (which I don't). To solve it, I pause my watch and start it again, seems to wake it up to register my HR correctly.

I'll try that next time. I wiped it on my shorts yesterday before starting my run and it didn't do it. Not sure if it was coincidence or what 🤷‍♀️

@dobball23 I agree with @jmasgat

In the picture, the first is Decathlon and the second is a bit warmer but four times the price. I wear these when the temperature is between 0°C (32F) and roughly -15°C (5F). If it is really cold, I wear the same as for downhill skiing and shown last: Gloves plus mittens over (it comes as a combo). I choose mittens that do not have finger shapes inside. That was, I can put my entire gloved hand in that “chamber” and even throw in a hand warmer, although I never had to for running.

Is Decathlon the brand of the first one? I am looking for something similar and can't find it. I found some similar versions to the Auclair that you have in the middle. And you're right, they're a bit pricier.

I have the same ones and have worn them the last 3 days. With the mitten overlay they are toasty!
Great to know! I don't know if I can wear gloves/mittens three straight days without washing them. Too many times I may wipe my nose or they get sweat-logged (even if my hands are cold).

Agree with @The Expert - with the mittens they are significantly warmer. However I don't really ever run in temps below freezing, so make of that what you will 😅
With as much as you run, how do you avoid running in freezing weather? I've had to do 17 and 20 degrees in Central PA the last two mornings.
