The Running Thread --2025

Excited to see this thread make it another year!! Started off the year with a 10 mile race on the 4th called the Wilderness 10 Miler in Saint Francisville. It is a "hilly" area for south Louisiana. I did not do well with training in December so my goals were not high for the race. Aimed for a 9:15 pace and it went like this:
Mile 1 9:19
Mile 2 9:32
Mile 3 8:56
Mile 4 8:46
Mile 5 9:08
Mile 6 8:53
Mile 7 9:25
Mile 8 9:14
Mile 9 9:24
Mile 10 8:42
Ave Pace 9:08 and finish time of 1:31:30 which was 15 seconds slower than a much flatter course ran about 3 weeks prior. Happy with the days effort.
Up next is the Louisiana Half Marathon on 1-19 with a goal of 2:00:00 and Zydeco Half in mid March where I hope to improve my half time a decent amount for a POT for 2026 WDW Marathon. (Hoping I will get to run it)

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and has a great 2025!

in my experience, this means running up and down the levee.

Per my garmin I had a total of 360' of elevation gain with a min elevation of 71' and max of 215'. Again, no Mt Everest, but within a hour of Baton Rouge... thats hilly lol.
I hate running on top the levee lol. Its either the hottest place on earth with zero shade in the summer or much colder in the winter with nothing to stop the wind.

I think all of them might be about a month earlier, taking a quick glance between the two infographics. So we have significantly earlier POT deadlines and now earlier registration dates.

I did not get these emails, but whats the POT deadline now? Earlier than last years of July 1?

ATTQOTD: My 2024 running highlight definitely came early in the year. Like some others, it was the 2024 Dopey-to-Dumbo. I finished the Disneyland Half with a PR (not that hard, since I'd only run 2 previous official halfs (halves?) that went the full 13.1, but still :)).

Couldn't pick just one, so here are a couple of photos.

Would yall happen to know if the weekly resort fun runs have returned to WDW resorts? I have a trip in June and was curious if they have returned and how are they? We are staying at the Boardwalk for this trip, so hopefully there is one in the area.

I have spent a lot of time at WDW this fall and haven’t seen mention of them being back. I’ve been at SSR and RIV mostly but am going to BRV tomorrow followed by AKV after MW and will keep my eyes peeled.

Not really the same as the fun runs, but the Boardwalk has a "Crescent Lake Wellness Challenge". Not sure what the prize is.

Question for the Garmin experts. My last 2 runs my Garmin has been doing a weird thing, where for the first 20 minutes of my runs it reads my heart rate really low. I know for a fact that my heart rate was not that low, because it literally never is. Has anyone had that happen before? Or know what I can do to fix it? I tried tightening and loosening the watch band, with no difference. I have an Epix Pro if that matters.

I have Epix gen 2. I haven't had this happen. But I haven been wearing Garmins with wrist HRMs for many years, so I can speculate.

Possibly your watch band was too loose - it wasn't tight enough to properly read your HR at first, but then something changed and it did. You said you played with the tightness, so probably this isn't it.

If you were running in the cold, possibly your wrist was too cold at first and the watch wasn't able to read the HR properly. (I think of it as the veins being a bit contracted from the cold, so the blood flow isn't at the same level to read.) Then as you went along and warmed up, the watch was able to read your HR properly. I have this happen to me in the winter, depending on the temperature. I don't have a fix for this except wearing more clothes to keep you warm, but I like to run cold, so I don't do that.

An all-year problem: were you extra sweaty under your watch or got wetness under it (i.e., rain)? I've had both of these happen occasionally. But they wouldn't necessarily be at the START of a run - I've had it just happen at times when the wetness is too much. In those cases, I will stop (pause the activity), take off the watch, and dry off the back of the watch and the HR LED on my clothes. This will often but not always fix the issue - depends on how wet I continue to be.

I'm not sure any of these are causing the problem for you, but who knows.

I tried tightening and loosening it, originally thinking it was that. I was running inside, so I don't think it was from being cold or wet. I'll try wiping the back of it before my next run and see if that does anything.

Have you checked what your cadence was compared to each section. It’s possible your watch was in cadence lock. I have found this happen - and it’s usually at the higher side, but I don’t think I’ve seen it since my Forerunner 220 and I wouldn’t think the Epix would be as prone to it.

Cadence was in the 170s, so I don't think it would've been that?
