I don't normally run in the mornings. If I do run in the morning and my run is less than about 75 minutes, then I don't worry about eating anything before.I'm going to start getting up earlier so I can run before sending my son to school. I see so many running influencers talk about their fuel before long runs, and what they eat 60-90 minutes before a run. I'm like...okay, do you really wake up 90 minutes before a long run that starts at before 7 am? Because I'll be lucky to drag myself out of bed and get dressed/brush my teeth before getting out the door by 6:30. At most, I'll have an applesauce pouch or something. For long runs on the weekend I'll be able to start later, but even then, there's no way I'm awake/functional enough to eat 60-90 minutes before a normal long run. How do people do that??? LOL!
If my run is going to be longer than that, then I will in fact get up early enough to eat breakfast and give it maybe 45 - 60 min to digest before I run. Sometimes I'll use that extra time to go back to sleep for a nap, even. When I was training for my first marathon, 2017 MCM, it was summer and to avoid the horrible heat for long runs, I would get up at 5am on Sundays, eat a bit as soon as possible and then get out the door at about 6:30am.
I think you need to have an idea if you're prone to bonking or not. Everyone has different digestive and metabolic systems, so some folks are more prone to bonking. It also depends on your conditions - i.e., hot and humid? nice? chilly? Because getting up early just for a long run and then bonking on it would SUCK, LOL.
