The Running Thread--2024

I'm going to start getting up earlier so I can run before sending my son to school. I see so many running influencers talk about their fuel before long runs, and what they eat 60-90 minutes before a run. I'm like...okay, do you really wake up 90 minutes before a long run that starts at before 7 am? Because I'll be lucky to drag myself out of bed and get dressed/brush my teeth before getting out the door by 6:30. At most, I'll have an applesauce pouch or something. For long runs on the weekend I'll be able to start later, but even then, there's no way I'm awake/functional enough to eat 60-90 minutes before a normal long run. How do people do that??? LOL!
I don't normally run in the mornings. If I do run in the morning and my run is less than about 75 minutes, then I don't worry about eating anything before.

If my run is going to be longer than that, then I will in fact get up early enough to eat breakfast and give it maybe 45 - 60 min to digest before I run. Sometimes I'll use that extra time to go back to sleep for a nap, even. When I was training for my first marathon, 2017 MCM, it was summer and to avoid the horrible heat for long runs, I would get up at 5am on Sundays, eat a bit as soon as possible and then get out the door at about 6:30am.

I think you need to have an idea if you're prone to bonking or not. Everyone has different digestive and metabolic systems, so some folks are more prone to bonking. It also depends on your conditions - i.e., hot and humid? nice? chilly? Because getting up early just for a long run and then bonking on it would SUCK, LOL.

I cannot emphasize and agree with this enough! My last early run was SO hot, SO humid, SO early, and felt SO awful, I’m taking to the treadmill today. And anyone who’s seen me around here long enough knows… that’s really saying something. :rotfl:

I definitely don't mind eating before a run, it's the eating 60-90 minutes beforehand that makes me go "no thank you," LOL. I've eaten bagels and bananas not long before leaving the house and didn't have any ill effects, so hopefully that continues. I'm also on medicine where I'm not supposed to eat anything for an hour afterward, but I haven't followed that rule in my entire life I've been taking it, LOL.

Shoe question for you Brooks runners! I've been dealing with some platar fasciitis since switching to Topos about 6 weeks ago. Not sure if coincidence or related, so I'm doing some things to try and figure that out. But I'm looking at other shoe alternatives in case it turns out to be these shoes.

I see the Brooks Ghost Max 2 is about to come out and specifically says it relieves PF pressure. I did try on the Ghost Max when I picked up my current shoes and nearly went with them. Anybody know if there's a huge jump in design between the two? Because the Max are on sale all over right now with the 2 coming out.
Not a shoe answer but the Strassburg sock does wonders if I start to have issues. It’s like a miracle fix. Easiest darn fix after fussing with it

Thank you! I've looked at those but wasn't sure if it was snakeoil or if it actually works. I'm honestly not sure if I could tolerate that while I sleep but it's worth a shot.

It definitely works for me. Lots of good reviews to back it up. Mildly uncomfortable at times in the night. However, those first few steps that are so painful in the morning will start to fade away. The science is that the foot heals at night with your toes pointed down. As soon as you put weight on your foot and start to walk you tear all the healing. With the sock keeping your toes pulled up it heals and doesn't tear again in the morning. I no longer wear orthotics that I hated anyways. No shots, no PT. Took two weeks and I had total relief.

QOTD: It's Olympics time!!! 🥳 What events or match-ups are you most looking forward to - running or otherwise?

ATTQOTD:
  • Marathons, obvs 😝
  • The men's 1500 is going to be 🔥🔥🔥
  • Also I think Faith Kipyegon is running both the 1500 and 5000, and she is always spectacular to watch
  • Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Femke Bol go head to head for the first time in a while 👀
  • Can Noah double again??
  • Aaalllllllll the women's gymnastics, please 🤸‍♀️
  • Whatever random events are on when I happen to turn on the TV. Breaking? Sure! Rock climbing? Why not?
Let's go, team USA!!!! 🇺🇸

Yes. I'm still grappling with how they do the coverage and what you can/cannot watch (because of what they choose to broadcast) but all of the things, please. I love it all; from table tennis and badminton, to the equestrian stuff, 10m platform diving (those people are craaaaaazy), rugby, it's just fun. And it's pretty cool to see sports that have a pretty low profile in the US played at an elite level (squash, handball, or jaiali as examples.) I've already let my husband know to not expect much out of me for the next couple of weeks while I binge on all of it. Swimming, T&F, and gymnastics get the lion's share of prime time programming (which I HATE because I don't want to stay up until 11 or 12 watching it!) so I'm glad we have the whole internet/streaming thing now where we can watch the replays, OR live coverage if we want to get up at 3am.

On a side note, I'm still salty about how they changed the medal ceremonies/how they are broadcast because I LOVED seeing medal ceremonies where other countries won and you'd get to hear all of the different national anthems.

ATTQOTD: I plotted out my viewing for the next two days and, well… it’s a LOT lol! Like, no way will I have time for all this viewing AND the rest of my life. I’m not sure how I’ll manage it, but I’ll do my best to push through and dig deep to get it done! Peacock may have created a monster with its incredibly vast coverage via streaming.

What am I most excited for? All the running, of course. I think the 800, 400H, 1500, and sprints will be epic.
Also high on my priority list:
Soccer
Gymnastics
Equestrian
Cycling time trials and road races
Triathlons
Skateboarding
Surfing
Swimming

I tuned in to some of the Olympic trials/qualifying/whatever it was for climbing and it was way more interesting as a spectator than I expected, so I’ll try to fit that in! I’d like to make time for tennis, but that one’s a huge commitment on its own, so it probably won’t happen. I always enjoyed rowing and fencing when I stumbled onto it in the past. And surprisingly to me, weightlifting is a fun watch. With the replays, in theory I could take the next two months to watch stuff… :rotfl:

I’m also Team I Want to See More Than Just US Competitors, so I’m really hoping the expanded streaming coverage will give some of that - it looks like the gymnastics subdivision coverage might? We’ll see, I guess. If nothing else, I can get my fix via soccer and T&F.

ATTQOTD: my family has never been big Olympics people, and I don't like gymnastics. I really got into the London Olympics because it seemed all NBC-owned channels were showing events which made it really easy to watch. I loved archery the most. The marathon could be fun, though commercials during the broadcast annoy me to no end. I'm not sure what else, but I'm trying to find which events Snoop Dogg will be on the team for because that for sure will be entertaining.

Yes. I'm still grappling with how they do the coverage and what you can/cannot watch (because of what they choose to broadcast) but all of the things, please.

Peacock will have all events and full replay, as well as Multiview--4 live screens at once! And CBC will have coverage. (Mostly less annoying than NBC). Get a VPN and then go for free coverage from Australia, BBC.

I'm all in for T&F, cycling (road, track), triathlon. Have already watched some soccer. Honestly, I love watching sports and will watch just about anything.

ETA: And yet, I am already pissed at NBC for the commercials cutting out entire performances in the opening ceremony.

I’m still figuring out all of the options with Peacock, but a few things I learned watching Tour de France with it that may be helpful…

1. It usually takes a couple hours after an event ends for the Replay option to show up.
2. On my iPad, Roku TV, and Roku device, the app allows me to rewind within a live event if I start viewing after it’s already started - but the app through my Vizio TV does not. It took me a while to figure that out and now the Roku device will be connected to the TV in my living room instead of the office TV.
3. The app can be finicky - make a note of where you left off if you pause partway through something because it doesn’t always remember correctly or from device to device.
4. You can look at the schedule from the main Olympics Hub and start saving events to My Stuff ahead of time - makes it a bit easier to find them when you’re ready.

I haven’t figured out where the MultiView lives - I know I’ve seen it, but can’t remember on which device. It’s not showing up on my iPad, but maybe it was on the Roku or TV app??

Interesting. When I had PF problems last summer/fall, I just did the full-out night braces for sleeping. They are the same idea as the Strassburg sock, but in L-shaped braces. I thought they would be really annoying to sleep in, but actually after one or two nights, I got used to them and it wasn't a problem. I put a thin pillow between my knees and calves so the braces wouldn't dig into the other leg. Probably the part that stayed most annoying was just changing sides while sleeping - just awkward.

I do think they made a big difference in the healing (heeling? LOL), so assuming the Strassburg sock really does keep your foot and leg in the same position, it should be helpful.

Peacock is probably my most-used streaming service. I follow English Premier League soccer closely and it has the vast majority of matches.
Same here! It used to have skiing as well, but skiing created their own streaming service, which I did not buy. Now I only use Peacock for PL games, so I haven't been on it since May.
