The Running Thread--2024

I'm pretty shocked I'm NOT sick after traveling for two solid weeks. I had hoped to get my flu and Covid booster shots before we went, but it was just a bit too early for pharmacies here to have them. I did that two days after I got back and so far, so good. I chalk it up to a ton of hand-washing and incredible luck. Hoping you all feel better soon and don't stress too much about taking time to let yourself heal.
I got both of mine Saturday, despite knowing I had this crud. I scheduled it last weekend for a reason, and I certainly wasn't going to let this cold stop me. If I was going to feel like 💩 I was going to keep it contained in one period. I've always been fine after each of my Covid vaccines, and the flu one never bothered me. My mom has this junk and got sick two days before me. So far I'm following the exact same pattern as her, just two days behind. I finally slept through the night and am feeling just a little bit better. I'll use this week as a reset.

No sickness for me. Did get an allergic reaction because I went to do food delivery in something I thought I could handle. Only to find out I am way past the point of this being able to be around that particular thing in most capacities. Fun.

Had the follow up phone call with Rocket City to get things squared away. The person I was speaking with could only remember one other wheels doing it and it was a pushrim. Which kudos to whoever that was. This is a course that's going to be challenging in the cycle at points. I can only imagine the difficulty of the ungeared pushrim on it. (there's a reason I'm taking the cycle over my pushrim).

Main concern was pace and if that was going to be an issue with a police car. Which no. I'm fast. And this is the same city I set my PR in for the 5k with no training on a rolling course. But it should be a non issue regardless.

Main thing is going to be finding hills to train on. Because while they aren't long climbs there are some sharp ascents on it.

Sunday check-in on my fellow sickies! I haven't run since my aborted run on Tuesday. One thing that I love/hate about wearing a Garmin watch all the time is that it gives me information about my illness that I wouldn't otherwise have, for better or worse. My watch always seems to know when I'm sick, before I do: the "stress" measurement usually shoots up for a day at the beginning of an illness for me. This time, it stayed elevated (as well as my resting HR) for the rest of the week. Yesterday was the first day my resting HR dropped back into the 40's and my "stress" measurement went back into the 20s. On the one hand, I feel like I would have subjectively felt like I was getting better, earlier in the week, but I was compulsively checking my HR and it kind of freaked me out that it stayed so high (for me). On the other hand, I probably would have tried to jump back into training too early if I hadn't had that HR info.

In any case, if my HR stays low today, I'm hoping to ease back into the training plan tomorrow. This was a rough one.

How is everybody else doing?

I also haven't run in a week and a half now. Could I try today? Maybe, but we have a lot going on because it's DD's birthday. I can definitely tell when my mucinex wears off, and I've spent a few nights in the recliner instead of the bed. I've been getting pretty gnarly sinus headaches for the last 3 days as well. Nothing that Tylenol can't handle, but it's not fun. DS2 is through all his antibiotics, and his coaches finally pulled the plug on him running in practice on Wednesday when he couldn't even get through the warmup with out coughing so hard he was throwing up. So he biked for the rest of the week and they scratched him from the Saturday meet. He's going to try to run today because we have a conference meet on Tuesday, and there are only 3 of those (and to be "all conference" they add together your best 2 finishing places, and he's been all conference freshman and sophomore years...it would suck to miss it junior year!) so he's pretty determined to run.

That poor kid. I hope he improves and gets his shot at all conference. And poor you! Everybody around me is really sick this go-around, like I haven't seen in years, personally.
Happy Birthday to your baby!

I should add, I did wind up testing positive for covid. I've been using these. published guidelines from 2022 to help me decide when to go back:

This chart is a pretty accurate representation of what I went through for the better part of two years, trying to figure it out on my own. Sadly, the “Assessment by medical professional” yielded no answers at all, other than a lot of shrugging of shoulders, a bunch of “probably menopause”, and side of “most women your age exercise less.” Most of my issues, other than the COPD that seems permanent but is thankfully handled well with an inhaler, did finally resolve over the past year+. But had I known back then what we know now, I would not have kept pushing to get back to normal training - I’m so glad we have better information like this now! Take it easy and recover well.

That's infuriating.

Got a six miler in yesterday. First time I've felt confident enough with the trail I've been using to go past the point I've been turning around (around 2.25-2.3 miles in so its generally a 4.5-4.6 mile ride round trip). Since the climb out of that section is steep. But we had bike guides with us yesterday (not always a guarantee with how many volunteers they get). And i knew one of the two was out in front and they had to eventually turn around. I figured even if I couldn't make the climb out and couldn't rope another trail user into helping me over it. They would eventually come back and give me the final push to get out.

Turns out I can now make the climb out. Definitely wouldn't have made it in my pushrim because its steep incline. But the handcycle on the lowest gear can absolutely make the climb. With a bit of difficulty because like I said steep. But it can make it. Which means a whole section of the trail I had been avoiding is now an option to use on my rides.

I’m definitely doing better. Last Saturday and Sunday were the worst days. Each day after I’ve been doing better. I fully rested Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, then started back slowly. I walked two miles Tuesday, did some barre Wednesday, and walked another two miles on Thursday. Friday is a full rest day no matter what. Yesterday I did my usual run/walk for three miles yesterday, just slower than normal pace, and I’ll do the same later this morning. I also did easy yoga yesterday where I made sure I didn’t do any inverted poses.

I’m feeling mostly better, but my sinuses are all messed up still. I haven’t run since last Sunday. I might make myself go to urgent care tomorrow because my right ear is completely clogged and I’m worried I have an ear infection. I took the dog for a walk yesterday and today and am going to attempt an easy treadmill run/walk tomorrow.

Happy first day of fall y'all! It's nearly time for all those warm summer miles to pay off at your fall races. What is on your fall racing calendar? Any big goals?

Officially I have no fall races on my schedule. My employer has a fall 5K that I usually run but I'm just not feeling it this year for multiple reasons. There is a 10 mile race the last weekend of November that I'm eyeing but haven't registered yet. It's a flat out and back course so could be great for a rD PoT. It'd also be a nice training checkpoint for me 6 weeks before the WDW marathon.

I hope those that are sick recover quickly and that everyone else's training is going well.

Castaway key 5k in November is it. Gonna try running again tomorrow and see how my psoas feels

I've got the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend 10 Miler on Oct 6--which is going to be a catered long run, The Spooky Sprint 5K on Oct 12--which will be raced but I'm not expecting any PRs, and Wine & Dine weekend--which is just fun 😄

Running the TC 10 Mile in 2 weeks, no big goals for that one other than to enjoy the day! I’m registered for the Madison 10k but not sure that my schedule is going to allow for a weekend road trip so maybe?

I’m enjoying the lack of races on my schedule, I feel like I put a lot of pressure on myself earlier this year with race goals and I’m back to just enjoying the running now. Feels really good!

I've got two events coming up this fall. First up is the Cape Fear 24 hour Challenge on October 12th. Just you and a 0.59 mile loop being best friends for 24 hours. Really hoping for better weather this year after it poured rain for the first 8:45 of the race last year. After that, it's all 3 races at Wine & Dine race weekend. We'll see how quickly the legs recover for that.

My cold moved into my chest just in time for my half marathon on Saturday, but I'm stubborn and ran it anyway. Paid for it yesterday. Forcing myself to take a couple days off and hoping I'll be well enough to do my long run this weekend, because my anxiety can't take missing long runs in the second half of a training cycle. Only "two" more races planned for this year:
Nov- Wine & Dine (all 3)
Nov- Every Women's Marathon
