The Running Thread--2024

THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A POLITICAL POST.

I saw this Tim Walz running challenge on instagram and I know a lot of you all have already succeeded. Me, on the other hand, am thinking “I still have a few years until I reach the age he set his PRs! Yeah!” 🤣

Heck I'm still trying to get under "The Oprah Line" in the marathon: 4:29:20

These are all very close to my PRs so I had to double-check 😆. I have him beat in the 10m & HM but not the 5 or 10K. Reminds me of when Paul Ryan lied about his marathon PR 🙄 https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo...ct-check-paul-ryan-exaggerates-marathon-claim

Omg, that’s hilarious. I’m not sure how accurate all of Walz’s times are because people found them online. 🕵️

I think George W. Bush’s might be the most impressive: Houston Marathon at age 46 in 1993, finishing with a time of 3 hours, 44 minutes, 52 seconds. 😳

That 10-mile time does seem like an outlier 🧐 Like @GollyGadget, I've run faster in the 10M and HM but just a bit slower in the 5K/10K. However I'm also like 15 years younger than he was running these, so... 😂

Curious how many of these races @Naomeri has run!
Only the Medtronic 10 Miler, the others require too much driving.

My governor is pretty dang fast, so I have no illusions that I could ever beat his PRs 😄😄

My governor is the richest elected politician in the United States, but I don't think he could even walk a mile. He did break his leg just standing in 2019 so that would be kind of a reverse PR we should work to avoid.

Walz's PRs are pretty impressive if he carried the weight he does now when he set them 10 years ago.

I have both LiveTrack and Incident Detection setup for my Garmin. I've never had an incident while running, so can't comment on exactly how that works, but for LiveTrack, everytime I start a run my husband gets a text message saying I started my run, which lets him track me the whole time. I do need to bring my phone with me, which I don't mind doing for the peace of mind it gives me.
I also have both of these while running with my Garmin. Yes, you need your phone.

I trail run, so I've had numerous trip-and-falls. I'd say it only successfully detects this as an "incident" about 25% of the time. Conversely, I've jumped over a log and had it trigger, and even washed my hands and shook them to flick off the excess water, and that triggered it. So YMMV. I would suspect that the detection would be more accurate with cycling accidents since the acceleration/deceleration would be more extreme.

Gotta be Illinois, right?

Even Walz’s 10 miler from 2021 is a little over an hour faster than my 10 miler from this past Saturday, and 40 minutes faster than my PR.

It’s finally cooling down a teeny bit here on the West-Central FL coast! And by “cooling down,” I mean that it’s still near 100º with Feels Likes over 100º as highs, but the overnights have gotten semi-consistently into the 70s, and it was only 88º at 11am yesterday. My sunrise run yesterday hovered between 75º and 78º. It’s certainly not Fall, but it’s an improvement. I’ve lived here 30+ years and it still amazes me how much difference just little less daylight (read: sun baking) each day makes.

ATTQOTD: I have the Philly 10k this weekend! Anybody else doing it? I was hoping to use this race as a target to motivate me to start training more seriously over the summer, which I guess I did, but I got sick on vacation last week and I'm still recovering. It's also blown my last week and a half of training a little. Anyway I'll give it my best and it will give me a fitness benchmark for when I start my recycled DopeyBadger marathon plan for January.
Just to follow up I ran this race and finished in a crazy-making 1:00:05. This is like the third race in a row I have missed a round number cutoff by a few seconds. I went out way too hot the first 2 miles, at a pace I should do only if I’m not only not getting over being sick, but really at the best running fitness I’ve ever been. Neither of those conditions were met today, And I just sputtered out after that. But the day was great, weather great if a little hot, and the after-race “festival” was lively. They gave out a free beer and a free frozen treat of some kind at the end of the race and I wondered who would want either of those things at 8:30am. Turns out, a lot of people! The finishers skewed younger than many of the other races I’ve done around here. Recommend if you don’t mind the iffiness of weather the last weekend of August.
