The Running Thread--2024

ATTQOTD: I'm running Fort2Base in suburban Chicago for the fifth time this weekend. It starts at the historic Fort Sheridan Army Post (now an Army reserve center) and finishes at the Naval Station Great Lakes (the largest Navy training station). The race is 10 nautical miles long.

10 nautical miles = 11.5 miles

Although I have never served, I enjoy the atmosphere, the swag, and the cause.

I've done a 10NM race before but it was in Millington, TN. Race was on a navy base in early June to honor the battle of Midway. If I recall correctly 10NM is also the distance from the ship to the horizon line. Cool race and awesome medal for that one. Total distance is something like 11.5 miles. Have fun and enjoy!

ATTQOTD:
I’m running Nebraska State Fair Marathon on Saturday. It’s a catered training run for me. I had 23 miles on the plan, so why not run a marathon in a new state! Of course the weather is going to be one of the hottest days of the week (high of 93 - but that’s like at 4 or 5). Thankfully the race starts at 6:30, so I should be done before it is tooooo terrible (still not great since it los long run pace). The race director just sent an email offering to switch marathoners to the half, or to switch to the half when they get to the split point at 11.something, or to defer to next year! But it looks like the red zone won’t happen until after the time limit.
I remember a training run a few weeks ago that was pretty uncomfortable, and I switched my run interval to 45 seconds (from 60s) and that helped a lot. So, I’ll roll with it and try not to overheat! Glad I’m not running for time!

ATTQOTD: This weekend is just the final long run capping out at 10 miles for Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon Weekend in just over 2 weeks.

I am happy to report that this training season is pretty close to normal. After I was in the hospital with pneumonia for a week last October in the middle of Dopey training, I obviously had to modify my training from be fully ready to managing the runs so that undertrained will hopefully not be racing while injured.

During that time, I often wondered if I would ever able to run normally again. Looking back, I was very blessed to be "fast enough to finish" despite being undertrained. This time around, I can do hard runs at faster paces instead of always being conservative.

This is true, but there is a hack. I've added a drawstring to the waist on some of my older ones (or those that ran strangely sized. It's really easy to cut a slit in the inside waistband and add a toggle.
Yeah, I tried that, but it’s not just the waistband for me - the entirety of the shorts are too roomy, all the way around.

ATTQOTD: I don't have anything on the schedule until my mid-October 24 hour race. This past weekend I started the portion of my training plan with dual long runs on the weekends. Training has gone very well this summer, but I'm not really all that excited about it eating so much of my weekends for the next 8 weeks. It's better than the alternative, though...

ATTQOTD: I have the Philly 10k this weekend! Anybody else doing it? I was hoping to use this race as a target to motivate me to start training more seriously over the summer, which I guess I did, but I got sick on vacation last week and I'm still recovering. It's also blown my last week and a half of training a little. Anyway I'll give it my best and it will give me a fitness benchmark for when I start my recycled DopeyBadger marathon plan for January.

Best of luck! Hopefully you'll be better by race day. The last 2 weeks of your training won't matter too much so don't sweat those missing miles.

Attqotd: my big challenge this weekend is not running and allowing my hip to heal in hopes I can pull off my peak week next week. I’ve been abusing my psoas with a percussive massager and it feels immensely better, but I don’t want to re-hurt it.

I’ll also be volunteering at a 100 mile adaptive cycle race on Saturday for The National Ability Center, so that should provide me with some enthusiasm for next week

Do any of you have a Garmin watch that has the option to notify an emergency contact in case of an incident? One of the people I follow on IG, who is training for a triathlon, crashed while out riding his bike and immediately it notified his wife that he had crashed and also sent his location. I am now very interested in this as when I do my bike training, I rode alone. Just wondering how well it works and if you have to also have your phone on you for the notification to work.

I understand you specified Garmin, and I don't know that answer. If it's possible it was an Apple Watch, the cellular-enabled ones will do this, even without a phone nearby, and can also work even if you haven't activated cellular service. The wi-fi-only models will also do this, but they require that your phone be within bluetooth range. After a fall, it will ask if you're okay, and if you don't respond it will message whomever you've set as your emergency contact(s), as well as 911, with your location.

I do have this feature. I don’t think it has ever activated. I have a Forerunner 965. Looking through the ‘Safety Features’ section in Garmin Connect, it looks like you do need your phone on you.
I have a friend who I run with who has had hers set off a couple times (once because of a fall, not sure what caused it the other time). It does give you time to cancel the notification if you are okay. The time she fell, we were with her, but she did not get to cancel the notification before it was sent, so she texted everyone that she was okay. I don’t know that she carries her phone on her, but I’m guessing yes because of the info listed in Garmin Connect. She has a more basic Garmin.

Yes, I’ve had it attempt to notify while trail running when jumping out of the way of mountain bikers, but it gives a set amount of time to disable it so it doesn’t contact if it was an error. I assume it needs my phone to actually do the notification

I have both LiveTrack and Incident Detection setup for my Garmin. I've never had an incident while running, so can't comment on exactly how that works, but for LiveTrack, everytime I start a run my husband gets a text message saying I started my run, which lets him track me the whole time. I do need to bring my phone with me, which I don't mind doing for the peace of mind it gives me.

👍 One of the reasons I've continued to pay for the upgraded RunKeeper all of these years is its live tracking feature. Tracking my runs gives my wife some peace of mind. 😊
