The Running Thread - 2021

That is cool! I didn't even know that existed, although DH probably did lol. I will look into that! Thank you!
As @FFigawi suggested and @DopeyBadger provided the tool for, in the pre-GPS days, I used a measuring wheel to mark our road at 200 meter intervals, all the way up to 1600 meters. I used an analog wheel with a 12 inch lugged tire. Not my exact model, but more like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lufkin-12-in-Professional-Measuring-Wheel-PSMW48N/302692350 A measuring wheel is pretty handy to have living in the country, even if you're not a runner. Laying out gardens, spacing trees, measuring garden hoses, etc.

Just a thought, a bigger wheel might work better for measuring rough terrain. Have fun laying out your steeplechase course!

FYI, Olympic Track and Field events start tonight (well tonight local to me, but morning locally to Japan). I found this website useful for finding local timing of specific events (link). Tomorrow morning (local to me) is a fun one with Women's 5000m qualifying and Men's 10000m final.

Thanks for the reminder
Just watched the men’s 10K, wow!
That pace is mind boggling

Ok, I have a weird question but I've seen this online and thought I would see if anyone here has tried it. I'm in TX and the 70-80% humidity mornings sometimes make me look like I just got out of the pool after a decent run. Has anyone tried putting deodorant on their forehead to decrease perspiration or anywhere besides underarms? I don't see how this would make a huge difference but I might give a shot until October rolls around.

Deodorant or antiperspirant? I wouldn't. First, I don't want to sweat less when I run, it is how the body cools. Second, I can't imagine what my eyes would feel like with deodorant or antiperspirant dripping into them.

yeah, the running into my eyes thing was why I haven't tried it yet. Agree with your point on not wanting to sweat less but 80 degrees and 80% humidity is a different animal. You can get going before the sun comes up but then the humidity can be in the 90% area and the temp is still 75

I‘d suggest trying out wearing a Bondi Band or something similar to keep the sweat from running down too badly.

What a strange PTRR today was. First it’s July 3 and not July 4. Yes I chose July 3 but I did not expect it to be so odd. First thing we noticed was the walk to Marta at 5:30 am. Practically no one out. Only saw people (not police or volunteers) till right at at midtown marta station. Next marta was empty. Normally train is standing room only and packed in. We got seats. Also the weather was some of the best I have seen for July in Atlanta.

Walk to corrals was normal but so few people. I was up in A. first time I am normally in B. I started in the back because I am not in racing shape. No flyover after the National Anthem. then the race started and it was so empty. I had so much space. No dodging or weaving. Now I wish i was in race shape as you could race this.

I had a goal finish 52 to 54 minutes. I missed it 54:31. cardiac hill kicked my butt and I got side stitch around mile 4. Thankfully I slowed a little and it got better. My calf feels a bit off. Hoping that gets better as the day goes on and not worse. Never had an issue with it during the run.

I am excited for tomorrow. Plan is to get up early and see the elites finish. Then we will bring Mallory out and watch the rest of the race.

good luck to my runners tomorrow @disneyatheart and @Krandor
Kudos on your PTRR time. It became such a PITA for this year that my son and I did a local race. Amen about the better weather.

Honestly, the only thing that helps is carrying very cold fluids and drinking constantly during the run. I don't need it for runs shorter than 10 miles, even when pushing really hard, but I have to work up to that. Just let the sweat flow, carry a cotton towel to keep the sweat out of your eyes, and go with it.

For longer runs, you have to find a way to carry and drink cold fluids. Not room temperature - cold. I use a camelbak, but there are many solutions available. The cold fluids keep your core temperature under control while replacing fluids.

July total:

84 miles. New best month for running (previous best was May with 59.4 miles)

And looking at the miles I’ve run this year plus what I ran last year, my current shoes are more than likely dead. So I really need to figure that situation out.

My eyes are stinging just reading that! I live in FL so I feel your pain. I’m also a very sweaty runner and I’m gross just after 1 mile in the summer heat and humidity. I like quick dry material visors. Let’s the heat evaporate through the top of my head and catch the forehead sweat.

July was a great month. I missed two runs (9 miles total) while at a horse show. The hotel my group picked out still hadn’t opened their fitness center and it was DEFINITELY not a safe location to run outdoors. Training is in full swing for Chicago and I am still intimidated by speed work. No idea why it gives me anxiety still. I am hitting all the paces easily and enjoy it while I’m doing it. Well, except when I’m doing 30 minute segment at 8:57 and an old neighbor blows by me at his “slow” warp speed easy pace 🤣

July 2021 Stats
Miles: 111.30
Average Pace: 9:57
Average Heart Rate: 157

Hogle Zoo 5K/10K Report (Salt Lake City)

I had my first in-person race in 18 months today! Our local zoo hosted a family-friendly 5K/10K this morning at 6am. I signed up for the 5K.

They had a quick and easy packet pickup yesterday afternoon at tables set up outside the zoo. Bibs and shirts, and they had a timing mat with a screen to test the bib and make sure it worked (that was new, but not a bad idea). I got up about 5, dressed, made a coffee to take, grabbed a Gogo Squeeze apple sauce, and drove myself the 20 minutes from home. I arrived about 5:45, sat in my car sipping coffee and eating my breakfast, trying to get my earbuds to pair with my phone (fail). Oh well, no tunes. I can better check in with how I'm feeling.

The 10K was to start at 6 am and the 5K at 6:15 (same start and course), so I made my way over from the race parking about 6, popped into the zoo bathrooms, and came back out to the main parking area where the start was set up.. They were just starting the 10K, which had about 100 participants. they then asked the 5K folks to come line up at the same start line and we started roughly on time. There were probably 150-200 of us, and LOTS of families with kids.

Temps were in the low 70s at the start, with slightly high humidity (for us), but we had a great breeze and the sun really didn't pop out from behind the peaks and light cloud layer until I was finishing my race. The course was one-mile loops into and around the zoo, which is located up on the bench above the valley (elevation about 4900 feet), and hilly! Hills are not my friends, and having visited before I knew to expect them. The course was winding and laid out well, weaving around the exhibits and backstage. Sadly, most of the animals weren't out yet. There were lots of staff and at least one course photographer, and one aid station in a spot where you could hit it twice each loop. Poweraide and water were available, prefilled in cups on the table (no passing cups). There was no real entertainment or music on the course except for the start/end of each loop, which was fine.

My last race was the full marathon at WDW in January 2020. I took pretty much the whole of 2020 off and I've been running entirely on the treadmill basically since January. I did start the Dopey training plan on time and am in week five, which calls for a 3-mile "long" run this weekend. The first half was mostly downhill, which was nice. But I knew what was coming and I tried not to go out too fast. I kept a reasonable pace for almost the entire first mile, but a steep section toward the end of the loop did me in and I walked for about the last quarter mile of each loop. I took water the first two laps at the second side of the stop. There were lots of people walking either in spurts or the whole thing (and virtually no race etiquette, but I've done Disney 5Ks enough to watch for weavers the those who stop and spread out). Thankfully the course was nice and wide, and there weren't enough people on it to be crowded in any section (even with both 5K and 10K participants on the same course).

I finished in 38:02, which is reasonable for me. My 5K PR is 34:50 so I wasn't entirely disappointed. (I didn't run it as a race anyway, just a training run.) The medals are super cute and SOLID (also, someone at Hogle Zoo marketing is a big fan of AK, as you'll notice from the pattern on the ribbon - which was also on the bib). There was a refreshment area in a large covered pavilion, and at first when I walked up I thought "wow - a lot of people are drinking beer at 7am!" until I noticed the Dasani was in cans. :D D'oh! They had that, chocolate milk and bananas. I took one of each, found a picnic table and stretched while I ate and drank. Took a few photos with the medal, texted my husband, then walked over to my car and put the drive down for the lovely trip home!

Overall, it was well organized and a fun, family race. I've been doing some incline training on my treadmill, so the hills weren't as killer as they may have been for me previously, but I had really hoped to run this without walking. It was good to feel the road miles and to know all my treadmill time hasn't affected me there. BUT Orlando won't have those hills OR the altitude, so I'm feeling good about going back to rD for Dopey!

Happy to answer any questions, and sorry for the novel.

July Running:
Distance: 88 miles
Average pace: 11:27/mi

Did every run in my new DopeyBadger plan perfectly, if I do say so myself :cutie: Maybe I took it a *little* easy on my recovery intervals between R paces  A bunch of B or C goal races in the fall but the A race for this plan is the Philadelphia Marathon in November. I may have gone a little overboard registering for races now that stuff is coming back!
