The Running Thread - 2021

July 2021 totals
Distance: 200km (125mi)
Average pace: 6m25s/km (10:20/mi)
YTD: 1375km on 2021km

It was a hot and solid training month. I had to shuffle things a bit and slip the entire plan by a day to free up some of the weekends. Plus I added AquaFit at lunch at my community pool.

DD did her first triathlon (a quarter of an Olympic) because her September 10k got canceled and she wanted a new objective, and a in person event! It was fun seeing how that works… Considering adding this to my retirement plans in many many years!

Nutrition Taste Test

Huma Apple Cinnamon: Because the last is sometimes the best, finally, a Huma I like. The slightly powdery texture is expected because of the cinnamon. Pie filling or apple sauce, this was a celebration and gave me the boost I needed.

Cliff Block Strawberry: Amazing strawberry candies. Those were my daughter’s choice for her triathlon and she shared the leftovers. Next time I am buying them for me too.

Gu Jet Blackberry: Between meh and yuk… The taste kind of stick in the throat and is slightly metallic, probably due to the caffeine but the blackberry does not cover it well.

Xact Fruit3 e-Beet: Excellent fruit paste like the other Xact. Slightly more pasty but pleasant. I am not sure how much it does for me energy wise.

July Totals:

Running: 41 miles
Average Pace: 9:44

Another PW for distance.

Highlights of the month:
Wife's second knee replacement surgery. On the bright side: no broken leg this time.
Lots of foot pain. Finally went to the doc, same diagnosis as always: no stress fracture, soft tissue over-use injury, not exactly sure which soft tissue. Cleared to run is the good new.
Here's the bell ringer: Complete rupture of the upper biceps tendon. Luckily you have 2 upper tendons. Tendons make a pretty impressive sound when they snap; like breaking a yardstick over your knee.

I'm down, but not out. Formulating a plan to get back.

Have you considered going to a PT that specializes in running for the foot pain? Your experience sounds a little like my posterior tibialis experience. Had pain in my shin, went to the ortho and after rest, x-rays and ultimately an MRI for an expected stress fracture, he threw u- his hands and said “it must be soft tissue, good luck with it.”

I found a local PT who was highly recommended by the local running group as a last ditch effort to find a solution. She took one look at my legs and then at my gait on a treadmill and told me I had an atypical curvature in one tibia that was stressing the posterior tibialis muscle. She dry needled it (ouch!) and put a wedge in my insole to fix it and I’m around 3 years without a recurrence.

July Miles = 137

This month, I learned why long races are typically scheduled in the Spring/Fall instead of Summer. I decided to go ahead with the half marathon I was considering for this month. It is a race I have done before but it is usually in April. They pushed this year to July. The day of the race was extremely hot and humid (for the Northeast, that is. I don’t want all you Floridians pulling out your tiny violins - lol). I didn’t adjust for the T+D and started out way too fast. I was pacing at my PR half marathon pace and suddenly slammed into the proverbial wall at about mile 7. I had to slow my pace down by ~ 35 seconds/mile just to make it to the finish line. As I slowed down, my first thought was, I am going to start getting passed left and right but that didn’t happen. In fact, I continued to pass others who were clearly having an even more difficult time than me. I finished at 1:41:19 which is 6+ minutes slower than my PR last October. But it was still good for 43rd overall and 2nd in my age group.

August should be pretty quiet race wise. I have a few in the Fall including (hopefully) Wine and Dine but I will mostly be focusing on starting my Dopey training in September.

January = 145
February = 111
March = 141
April = 127
May = 143
June = 126

2021 total miles = 930

@OldSlowGoofyGuy what were you doing to rupture a bicep tendon? I am doing a bunch of hiking this weekend so I can take my mind off things. It has helped.
Heavy solo lifting cleaning out MIL's house earlier in the week. Not sure, but I suspect it contributed.

Working out at the YMCA. I've been having issues with that arm, so my plan has been start off light and increase the weights if it feels alright.

Curl machine. X felt alright. X+5 first rep: SNAP!

FWIW, stress fractures in foot bones can take a very long time to show up in images. Mine did not show up until I was in a boot for over a month. My podiatrist found it with a tuning fork. After the healing really started, it became more and more clear on images.

I had continued to run on the stress fracture because my regular doctor did an X-Ray, said it had to be soft tissue (no break), and encouraged me to run again, but with care. Because I listened to him I lost almost 4 months of running instead of 6-8 weeks.

Listen to your body. If running still hurts that foot, get a second opinion.

July totals
17.9 miles in 4h15m.

Been a while since I posted one of these. I started having asthma issues when I started ramping up again, so these totals are basically everything since I saw the asthma specialist. Three months left to train for Wine and Dine; I think it's possible at this point. I don't expect to finish it quickly, but I do expect to finish and not get swept.

18 days with no running while we went east and visited some National Parks and Theme Parks. Busch Gardens Williamsburg was fun. New River Gorge NP was nice to visit with lowish crowds, and the white-water rafting on the New was worth the price. Seemed like everyone was visiting Gatlinburg/Pieogon Forge and Smoky Mountain NP, yikes it was sooo crowded
