The Running Thread - 2021

@dis_or_dat is a Boston Marathon finisher! party: Appears she closed her last mile as her fastest! Well done!

SUPER impressed with @dis_or_dat ! My last 2 marathons were negative split (or close) and this was nothing like that. I was fighting hard after about mile 15 and slowing down late wasn’t giving me a lot of relief. I’m not sure my quads have ever felt this rough.

Are you running Chicago again tomorrow?
That was the original plan, but I got a late invite from Boston in August allegedly because my qualifying time was close. I’m guessing they knew there’d be some international runners that could not get here or people otherwise deciding to cancel. I had a few friends run Chicago. I thought it was a little warm in Boston, but I probably would’ve dropped out of Chicago with yesterdays temps.

So, how was Boston??? Just looked you up... congrats!!

Thanks so much!

Compared to Chicago and New York, it’s pretty unique in that you really aren’t in Boston until very late. You are running through smaller towns so it has a different feel. I mean the neighborhoods in Chicago and New York change throughout the course, but this is different. New York and Chicago has more spectators based on that. But there was plenty of support. All 3 of the US majors are great and have their own strengths.

Congrats on finishing! Spectators were definitely down this year. Both my husband and I commented on that. Usually it’s wall to wall people. I know many towns asked that people spread out and I think having it in October also hurt the spectator aspect. We are all looking forward to it being in April next year. The weather was also warmer than it usually is this time of year.

If it was hydration, I probably grabbed Gatorade and dumped water on my head. Although I may have taken another gel then. By this time, I was not noticing much other than slower mile marker changes. 😂

if it was handing out Maurten, I didn’t partake.
It was the Maurten. Good call. 🤢

I don’t really have time for a full race report so here are the cliff notes 🤣 I was aiming for 4:10 and was on track up until mile 14. I ended up with an average pace that was equal to my long run pace during training so that’s not too shabby!!! Unfortunately I ended up with digestive issues the rest of the race. Weather wasn’t ideal and it felt like I was back home running in FL. I saw my husband and daughter in mile 22 and a quick hug from them was the most incredible feeling. Aside from the tummy issues I felt awesome. I had an incredible training cycle and even though I didn’t meet my goal I knew I would cross that finish line strong. I did have to ice my calf after I finished the race and I was sore in my right knee and left hamstring on Monday which made for a fun flight home 😆 I woke up today with no aches or pains.

I loved every moment of this race. The crowd support was like nothing I have ever seen before. I still have a deferral from the canceled 2020 race that I can use for 2022 or 2023. I’m leaning towards using it for 2022!!!

ETA: my daughter just found the photographer who captured a picture of our hugs and kisses in China Town

Hi guys! Had a blast at the Boston Marathon! It was so fun!
I’ll do a super loooong too detailed report soon!

@cburnett11 great job!!!

@Chasing Dopey rolling start was interesting. By the time I got to the start (Having missed my bus!!) it seemed like anyone from any wave could get on any bus and start at any time. Probably not for the first waves but definitely by my wave. There was no “ritual/ceremony” of nervously toeing the start with your hand on your watch. you just walked from the porta potties straight to the starting line and go! I wasn’t racing so it was fine for me to go with the other waves. But it was hard to gauge where I “was” in relation to all the runners because they were lower waves but started earlier.

@Jules76126 I was wondering how spectators would be affected but having nothing to compare it to, everyone was amazing! Definitely no kissing at Wellesley!

@xjillianpaige I saw you!!!! But I was expecting you at the hydration station and was distracted by the crowd on the parallel street so when I saw your hat it was too late to say hi! Did I detect a Boston accent?!

thanks @JulieODC and all the volunteers! Everyone did such a great job!!!

question: I kept hearing people screaming we were children of Boston - is that what Boston marathoners are called?

What do people not like about Maurten? Is it hard to digest or is it the texture or the taste? Which ones?
I’ve had one before and it was fine. I actually grabbed one yesterday early and stashed it in case I needed more late or lost my own gels. Some of my friends swear by Maurten. I just have used GU roctane and haven’t had a reason to change.

After cheering on friends running Chicago, and watching Boston live, I’m realllllly starting to think marathon #2 might be on tap in 2022.

I don’t think WDW is in the cards, but need to pick one (Boston charity? Local New England? Somewhere else?)

what have you all considered when picking your non-Disney marathons?

I have actually recently switched *to* Maurten from primarily Gu. The Maurten isn't as sweet and syrupy. And I don't have to drink as much water with it as I needed to, in order to gag down a Gu. I do pretty well on them.

what have you all considered when picking your non-Disney marathons?
I'm running my first non-Disney marathon next month, the Philadelphia Marathon. I chose based on size, I'd be worried about coming in last in a small marathon, and also I couldn't get through a marathon-length run with no spectator support. Convenience was also important. I live like 10 blocks away from the start line of this race. At Disney I never have a good plan for breakfast and pre-race fueling generally, and it always bites me. Here I can have a normal dinner the night before, cook my normal breakfast, do my normal pre-long-run routine, and walk out the door.

It was an easy choice for me. I'm running my third DesPlaines River Trail marathon on Sunday in suburban Chicago. It is on the same trails I train on 4-5 days a week, they have great organization, and since there is a 50-miler at the same time I can take almost forever to finish if I have to. Its also the only non-Disney marathon I have run.

I am currently trialing a bunch of different fuels. I tried Maurten and so far, it was my least favorite. The texture is like slightly too thick jello, too thick to just swallow but not thick enough to really chew. It is unflavored but highly caffeinated so the only taste is the bitterness from the caffeine. I liked that I didn’t need as much water with it in theory, but I ended up drinking a lot of water trying to get the flavor out of my mouth. It is also quite a bit larger volume than most of the other gels I have tried. Not for me, but I got a few recommendations for it, so it certainly has fans.
