The Running Thread - 2019

My kids are 2 and 4. They have not seen me run a race yet, and I also leave them at home during Marathon Weekend trips (I go with my mom).

My DH finally agreed that we can take them to WDW in 2021, so yay! But that means no Marathon Weekend for me in 2021 since we will probably go at the end of January that year with the kids.

ATTQOTD: My kids were already out of the house when I started running, so I don't have this problem. Neither they nor my wife tend to come out and spectate my races, with a couple of limited exceptions. My younger daughter actually came to Marathon Weekend to run her first marathon this year. She insisted that she wanted to come out and spectate the finish of my half marathon to support me and get a feel for how things worked around the runDisney races. I told her when I was planning on finishing, but when I got to the finish line I hadn't seen or heard her along the course anywhere. I couldn't find her outside finish area and she wasn't returning my texts. So I went back to the room and found her still asleep! Worst. Spectator. Ever. :sad2: :P :-)

I find this a very interesting question. I don't currently have any children besides my two cats who do not want to come to races. My husband and I were actually talking about kids this past weekend and how different our workout schedules and races will have to be. Currently we can just work out together and he usually spectates any races I run that he isn't also running. This will all change once we do decide to have kids. My guess is we would not bring them to races when they are little due to the hassle and have either my parents or my in laws watch them.

ATTQOTD:
We all ran the WDW marathon together in 2018... well at least we traveled/stayed together, although my son ran with his wife and I ran with my daughter. My kids are both married so don't really go to my races very often unless we happen to be doing one together.

ATTQOTD: Normally, my husband would just bring them to cheer and watch the end of the race. Tomorrow my husband and I are running a 10K together so I had to ask my parents to come watch them for the evening. We don't live near family so hanging with the grandparents is fun for them. As for the Wine and Dine (my first Disney race), we are leaving them at home with grandparents and using this as our parents only trip of the year. We have a WDW trip in a few weeks so they aren't missing out that much. I would like to do a 5K with my 8 year old soon though. Perhaps Princess weekend for her bday??

Attqotd: haven’t run a race since the babby was born. Most of my races in the next few months are within a short walk, drive, or public transit, so she will stay at home with mommy. Kinda the same for the ultra and marathon weekend except she will stay with mommarino in the hotel.

ATTQOTD: My daughter is 5 and has only ever known me to be a runner (started 7 years ago). I think she's been to most every local race I've done. She usually only comes to the finish line at the marathon during Dopey, because it's too hard for them to see me finish the other distances due to timing. She's my #1 cheerleader, and I'll be hers this weekend.

ATTQOTD: my 11 year old daughter is my running buddy now for runDisney 10k's - we have done the last 3 together and will be doing Star Wars this weekend. I started as her running buddy for Girls on the Run 3 years ago, so she has moved up from those 5 K's to 10. Still a few more years until she can try the half though. my 15 year old is brought kicking and screaming with my wife to the finish area for the races, and all 3 are usually there with signs cheering my on at the half finishes. If I do other races around town, its usually just by myself and everyone stays home, unless there is something special, like at Celebration where they have all the food booths and places to hang out.

ATTQOTD: Great question! I’m still trying to figure this out actually lol. My son is 11 and is not a runner... so he has no interest in watching me race and he’s a little too young to be home alone that long. I’m thinking about getting a sitter, but I may have to skip my next 5k because I don’t know if I can arrange for child care in the afternoon. Hopeful I find a solution.

That was my mom as spectator this year! I actually did tell her not to bother coming because getting from AKL to the finish line by 7:30 would have been too hectic. I did expect her to be at least awake and partly ready for our 9:30 Boma reservation by the time I got back to the room though. Nope.

2018 we stayed at All-Star Sports, and she was able to walk out and see me on the highway by McD's and then went to the finish line.

This year we are at Poly, so whether I do the half or the full, or both, she can just roll out of bed and cheer me on!

QOTD: What to do with kids when racing? sitters, leave 'em home, etc.?

My boys are 19 (college) and 22 (professional) and never have taken any interest in my running. I took my younger to a tri in Miami last year and he reluctantly ran the Disney half in January (with no training.) My older ran cross country in high school but his only goal was to not finish last. I never saw my father perform any exercise of any kind so I like to think I provide a good example but in general they really do not care. I do not share my results with them.

I do, however, take great pride in the fact that at age 49 I can crush them.

ATTQOTD: For the most part, my kids just stay home. For runDisney races there is only one so far that they haven't traveled down to DL with me for. For the 10k they just stayed at the hotel except the last year when DD ran it with me. Some years for the Half they came to see me finish but that depended on which hotel we were staying at. DD12 does 5ks with me now so that's fun and DS8 does ask about kids races but its hard to make that work. I need to make more of an effort to get him involved. This is where I really miss the California runDisney races. DS loved the kids races and Disney is really about the only way I could get DD to do a 10k. For WDW marathon weekend I'll be leaving the kids at home with Dad.

ATTQOTD:...... So I went back to the room and found her still asleep! Worst. Spectator. Ever. :sad2: :P :-)

Been there. At the Shamrock a few years ago, my wife and friends ran the Half and I did the Full. The half started 90 minutes before the full but they promised to be there and scream loudly for me at the finish. Got to the finish, none of them there. Went through the finisher area, nobody waiting for me. Found them in the party tent having a blast. They all said "Oh, you already finished?" Worst. Group. Ever. (in their defense, the party tent at Shamrock is pretty fun)

ATTQOTD: I worry more about my 4 -legged kids. My two-legged kids are driving aged teenagers so I don't have to worry about what to do with them. I'm fortunate they participate in a running event with me at least once a year.

ATTQOTD-yesterday- Infrequent visits to the gym. Every time I get in a groove with strength training, I end up hurting myself. So now my motto is "No Gain, No Pain."

My kids are older now, so they will occasionally do a 5k with me. When they were younger and my ex and I both did the Warrior Dash, we'd either have a friend that wasn't running stay with them or that race had the option of doing different waves, so we'd start in waves over an hour apart, so one of us could finish before the other had to go line up. Most 5Ks don't have that as an option, so we were lucky. Hoping next year, they'll come though I guarantee none of them would get up early to watch me in the shorter races, but for the marathon, they'd likely come watch me at DHS or EPCOT.

Leave 'em (daughter is away at school)...and she's not too happy that I'm going to Disney again without her.

I don't have kids, so I don't have much useful to add to today's discussion topic. Instead, I'll toss out a link to the funniest running-related April Fool's article I read this year. Derek nailed it with this one.

Thanks for posting this. Almost forgot to pack my maple syrup for this weekend. :)
