The Running Thread - 2019

I definitely test out all costume pieces in advance. The exception is things like arm warmers that I'm ok with tossing if they become too annoying. I may not test out the whole costume together. And I've done athletic shirts with fabric paint in the past, I don't test them after the paint is on so they don't necessarily look like costumes when I test them.

ATTQOTD: Look. I know everyone swears by the "nothing new on race day" mantra but I just don't care enough to run in a full costume to test it out. Most of my costumes are super running friendly anyway and I don't usually go overboard with things that can bug me (except maybe that pizza box), so this isn't really an issue to me.

P.S. 26.2 miles with pom-poms in my hands, check.

QOTD: With another running weekend coming up this week at WDW, I figured now would be a appropriate time for todays question... although a little late for some. If you run in a costume of some sort, do you test it out? What works or doesnt work in your experience?

ATTQOTD: I've run one race with a costume kinda. What I can say is it got hot real fast and chaffing was a issue. I think that concluded my desire for a costume to run in. I also think if I thought it out a little better changes could be made to prevent these issues.

After a regretful choice of wearing a tutu my friend made the night before princess last year, I will test out all running gear before anything longer than a 5K. My thighs eat shorts on a normal basis, a cute too long tulle skirt was significantly worse than I had imagined.

ATTQOTD: More or less. I use running clothes I wear regularly to make a "costume", so those pieces are already tested. But if I'm adding an unknown element, I'll give it a test. Like I made some DIY big pins for this weekend - I pinned one on and jumped in place and discovered it flaps all over, so I'm bringing duct tape to tape it down. BOOM: tested!

ATTQOTD: All of my costumes to date have been variations of existing running gear using iron ons or colored duct tape. For those, I did not feel the need to do a test run after the shirts were altered.

For Star Wars I am using 2 new shirts I have yet to run in but they are the exact same shirt of one I already own and run in - just in different colors so I am not too worried.

I have lots of catching up to do...

March Totals:
120 Miles
9:28 average pace
149 average HR (clearly something is working because this is NOT normal for me)

ATTQOTD (Tuesday): I do Body Pump twice per week, Pilates twice per week and lift weights with my hubby once per week, unless a work meeting gets in the way because Body Pump and Pilates are held in the YMCA that is inside the building where I work.

ATTQOTD (Wednesday): I only have fur children. LOL

ATTQOTD (today): I have ran a few Disney races in costumes I've never tried to run in before and they have all been fine. The one exception was running in wings as Tinkerbell and I will never do that again, thankfully that was for just the 5K.

ATTQOTD: My costumes are always a base of my running gear plus accessories that could be let go if need be: Maleficient horns, homemade huge straw headband and coffee sleeve, cardboard shells on clips... And these are just for a costumed charity 5k ran in a stadium so I usually do a first loop with the accessories then leave them and pick them back up for the last half loop and the photo finish!

QOTD: What to do with kids when racing? sitters, leave 'em home, etc.?

ATTQOTD: It really all depends for us. If its a big race for me like a marathon or a PR effort, then they will come out to support me. If its a training race or for fun race, then it will depend on whats going on that particular day... Things like weather, other activities for the kids, ect are all considered.

For local races they (2yo & 7yo) stay with DH. ODS has started asking to run with me so he may be joining me occasionally. Side note: Our local high school did a 5k and a fun run to raise money for the band last weekend. After asking ODS, I signed us up for the fun run. I didnt care to pay the extra for a chip until I saw how he did. It was awful. Aside from the lack of organization, etc., he cried the entire time. In fact, we only WALKED 1.6 of it before heading back early. Needless to say, he's going to go on some training runs with me before we sign up for anymore races. He's already asked to do 2 of the virtual runs this summer. We shall see.
Anyway, back on topic, they did come to MW and tried to make it to the finish line but we're too late. DH says it's just too much hassle with the 2yo right now. Our next MW won't be until 2023 and I'm hoping ODS will do the 5k with me and I'll do my first marathon.

No costumes for me. I am what some might call a boring person. While I love Walt and his imagination, my personality would definitely be more like Roy’s. :teeth:

ATTQOTD: For costumes I tend to stick to a very basic model of sweatyband + InknBurn shirt or tank + nike spandex racing shorts or capris + sparkle athletic skirt. So I guess sometimes I run in those without testing if they are the exact same model I've worn a billion times in a different color.
With accessories I've just used them for first time on race day with the knowledge that I won't be sad to throw them in a garbage can if I end up hating running with them. Wings for Tink Half and Parrot for WDW Half are prime examples...and they both made it through the whole race!!

ATTQOTD: I haven't run in a costume yet. Maybe in November.

I ran my 10K last night and had a great race! I finished in 53 minutes, 9 seconds which is faster than my goal. Hopefully that will get me a decent corral placement for Wine and Dine.

ATTQOTD: My only adventure in the costume world is a cheap Party City kilt for a local Tartan Trot 5K. The cheap polyester fabric turned out to be light and performance-like.

I did test it out on a training run and realized the waistband needed more Velcro, which the DW took care of.

Not saying if I had to make it bigger or smaller.
