The Running Thread - 2019

QOTD: What to do with kids when racing? sitters, leave 'em home, etc.?
ATTQOTD: I have college aged kids and they have joined us and ran in the last 2 marathon weekends and we had a great time. Marathon weekend is a great weekend for us because it falls right in the middle of their winter break which means we can do our annual family trip in January instead of the hot summer. This weekend, my wife and I are doing our first runDisney non Marathon Weekend event and the kids are both still in school. So I have a bit of a different issue and that is dealing with jealous kids - especially my younger daughter who is a huge Star Wars fan.

ATTQOTD: Marathon weekend has historically been a couples trip. (My kids have had annual passes for almost as long as I've been doing MW so they don't get upset if we go without them.) The kids stay home and my wife and I go with a 3 or 4 other couples. 2 years ago we went with a group of 7 couples and the logistics were a little more difficult to manage.

I've don't other race weekends including Everest, Princess and Wine and Dine with the kids. I think this year my wife has decided to skip MW and I'll just head down with my son.

Man, I'm way behind. You guys have been busy.

ATYQOTD: (or the day before), re strength training: I try to hit the gym twice a week for strength training (all upper body, except leg extensions to keep the knees happy.) I don't know if it counts as strength training, but I try to make it to two yoga classes a week.

Mondays are big days for me: 6AM yoga for an hour, strength train for 1.5 hours, then run. If my whole week goes to heck in a hand basket, by Monday 10AM I have 3 workouts in.

ATTQOTD: It really all depends for us. If its a big race for me like a marathon or a PR effort, then they will come out to support me. If its a training race or for fun race, then it will depend on whats going on that particular day... Things like weather, other activities for the kids, ect are all considered.

My kids are 15, 13, 11, 9, 8, 7, 7. Three of them belong to my fiancé. I have run a race with two of my kids once. But my 15 year old did a 5k with one of her friends two weeks ago. She is joining cross country in the fall. She will be much faster than me when she really gets in shape but I would love to do a race with her some day but generally I pick races on the weekend we have no kids. Training runs aren’t an issue because even if my fiancé isn’t home to watch the kids my 15 year old is.

ATTQOTD: So up until now all my races the kids have stayed home with my wife. Next weekend's 5K we are all participating. As I mentioned I have been running with my daughter a little bit, in hopes she picks up the bug and I get a running partner. My wife and boys aren't fans of running. At. All.

My kids are 13 and 11. When DH and I do local 5 and 10ks we just leave them at home. DD(13) is barely awake by the time we get back. This weekend I'm flying my mom in to stay with them while DH and I do the SW half with some friends.

I'd love for the kids to do more 5ks with us, but they're not interested.

My kids generally stay home with my husband, and this is part of why I don’t race very far from home except Disney. I appreciate DH wheeling them out to the 10k course when we were staying at beach club. It was awesome to see them still in their PJs, snacking on pastries, making their stuffed animals cheer (or roar) on runners. I had been looking forward to a solo w&d trip, but now everyone is going and we are staying at a value resort so I expect they will stay in bed as taking 2 tired & sleepy kids to the finish sounds like fun for no one.

Ugh, I posted this in my training journal but thought I'd get you guys in on it too! Please pray and send good thoughts for my daughter Lynae (DD29). She did something to her knee yesterday but doesn't remember doing anything to hurt it. She was in lots of pain last night and texted me a pic, which shows it a little swollen. She says it is a bit better this morning. She has been icing and ibuprofen every 4 hours and is going to continue RICE all day. We are flying in to WDW tomorrow for Star Wars half. :(

On another, happier note, if anyone on here is doing Star Wars but not following along on the Star Wars thread (why, lol??), we are having a mini meet up at HHH on Saturday at 1:30. If they are closed due to storms/lightning, we are moving to Ale & Compass lounge in the Yacht Club. :)

ATTQOTD: wish I knew. For W&D my 8 year old is running the 5k with me. My husband was supposed to watch her for the other races, but it looks like this will be my first vacation as a single mom. So I'm bringing a niece and cutting out one of the races I wanted to do so that childcare isnt as big an issue for now.

QOTD: With another running weekend coming up this week at WDW, I figured now would be a appropriate time for todays question... although a little late for some. If you run in a costume of some sort, do you test it out? What works or doesnt work in your experience?

ATTQOTD: I've run one race with a costume kinda. What I can say is it got hot real fast and chaffing was a issue. I think that concluded my desire for a costume to run in. I also think if I thought it out a little better changes could be made to prevent these issues.

ATTQOTD: I test out the main components, like skirt and top. But that is usually my whole costume, lol, with maybe a bow or something in my hair. For Star Wars I bought a felt Vader mask off of Etsy and I am just putting it on my visor.

Today was my final weigh in for our work Biggest Loser contest. The contest actually ends next week but they are being kind and letting me weigh in now instead of after I have been at WDW for a week! I lost 13 lbs since January 21st!!

@Slogger Thank you! Yep, I may be worrying more than she is!

I may test out aspects but I have never done a full run in full costume. I have yet to have a costume that doesn't work.
