The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: With a lot of followers on this thread running WDW Marathon weekend I thought todays question would generate some good replies. How do you feel about the "taper" portion of your training plan? Do you look forward to the reduced miles or hate running less? Does your mind start playing tricks on you and you think you have all kind of injuries all of a sudden? Anything else that the taper makes you feel?
Well the reduced miles are nice because it's rest before the big event. A lot of my miles lately have been on the treadmill as well so less miles on the treadmill is always good. I'm not going crazy yet and I don't feel like I have any injuries so I think it's going okay so far.

ATTQOTD: I am not quite in the taper portion of my plan yet for Houston (week after Disney), but the taper always makes me feel like I am not running enough, and does cause a little bit of concern. It allows my mind to start playing games about did I do enough to meet my goals for race day. I know the "hay is in the barn", but I still go a little crazy.

I have no answers for the past 2 questions of the day... I'm a whimp in the cold and don't run far enough to taper (yet!).

I do have a question that's probably been discussed on here a million times, so I apologize for the repeat. I am looking into a pair of compression socks to wear flying/long run recovery. My main question is... Do you think I need to buy running specific socks or could I buy socks like nurses wear?

QOTD: I love tapering because by then I'm almost burned out (if doing an 18 week training plan). I'm surprised by how little Hansons tapers week 17 (e.g 45 miles instead of 50). I understand the reasoning, but it doesn't really feel like a taper, KWIM? Anyways, I'm already thinking every little thing is an impending sign of injury or illness. I'm a klutz, so there's always a real possibility that I'll fall for whatever reason and hurt myself. Then I start pouring over my runs to beat myself up about not hitting paces or not enough on hillier terrain, missing runs, psyching myself out about goal times, and obsessing over weather. Taper madness is real.

ATTQOTD: The training plan I am following, JG, doesn't really have a taper. I mean, I only run 6 miles for my long run this weekend and 7 for my long run next weekend, but I have had 2 step back weeks with that same mileage between all my long runs since the beginning of November. So it doesn't feel any different. :confused3

It appears i wont be running the Houston Marathon this year, but since we had plans to be there to hang out with some friends we are still going to be there. My buddy still plans on running the race so I will be at the race, just from a different perspective. Perhaps I will see you out there.

I have the running type and DW has the ones one mentioned, because she wears them as a nurse. From what she has mentioned about them, they seem to serve the purpose she is looking for. However they seem much easier for her to put hers on. I really think if you are just using them for travel/flights it probably doesnt matter.

A Running Thread 1st:

I think this is the first weekend since the thread has started that no one has a upcoming race for the weekend.

If anyone out there does have a race, let me know!!!

Instead, I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend and safe travels. Enjoy whatever runs you have planned!

I love tapering. My training usually has me so exhausted by the time taper rolls around that it's nice to have a couple weeks to rest and recover. The one difficult part is telling my stomach it can't have the thousands of calories a day it's been getting for the month prior.

ATTQOTD: I enjoy the reduced miles during the taper. It doesn't make me crazy and I don't worry about the reduced miles. I go on a special diet during the taper, so its kind of a ritual leading up to the holy day.

I do get 'fragile' during this time and worry about stubbing my toe or catching a cold.

I'm not sure if we've started entering 2017 races yet, but I see at least a couple non-Disney ones there in January? :) I have some others, but here is just my January one:

January
15 - Miranda - Snowflake Shuffle (NG / N/A)

ATTQOTD: I've got a love/hate thing going with the taper... on the one hand, my body and schedule sure appreciate the reduced mileage. On the other, I don't sleep well with that reduction. This week isn't too bad: miles are down, but workout intensity is still up. Next week I'm likely to be a sleep-deprived raging lunatic, lol!

I generally love tapering time because after all the hard work I'm tired and would like a break before the race. I definitely worry I will get injured or sick during this period. You may as well wrap me in bubble wrap I'll be happier.

This is me - love it except for the fact that I have to eat less. I'm not a huge foodie, but it is the holidays. My wife is baking cookies right now. I am HUNGRY!

I highly recommend the CEP compression socks. I have a pair of knee high socks for recovery and my wife has the ankle socks due to past ankle injuries. They are the best I've ever tried and worth every penny.

If it makes you feel better I am doing a race this and next Saturday, I usually just don't put them here. I'm doing the Frosty Five in Hudson, OH on Christmas Eve and the Great New Year's Eve race in Stow, OH the following weekend.

I love the taper because I'm usually so burned out on longer runs by the time we get close to race day.

But, taper madness is totally real. I've been guzzling Emergen-C and I was just sitting in a meeting with these thoughts running through my head,
"Am I sniffling more than usual? Wait, I think my throat feels a little scratchy? Is it scratchy or am I just thirsty?"

*drinks water and assess swallowing*

"Hmmm, was that a little more difficult than normal to swallow? I think I might have a headache. Is that a headache or my glasses just bothering me?"

*takes off glasses and rubs bridge of nose - puts glasses back on*

"Yeah, I think that's a headache. Am I getting sick? Oh my gosh, I'm getting sick!!"

Rinse and repeat...

I need help :-( I've been having some ongoing pain, that I can't seem to kick -- and I am not totally sure of next steps.

Started ~2months ago with some hip pain (inner hip) after running hills one evening, and while the pain is mostly gone, it still feels tight. That seemed to transition into quad pain -- which I thought was just soreness after some longer training runs, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. In fact, I cut Tuesday's run short because my quads were so achy/stiff, and today was a little better, but still some pain. And, then, today I had some stiffness in my shin/ankle. The quad soreness is on both sides, but the hip/quad/shin/ankle is definitely more pronounced on my left side. It does seem worse with the colder weather too.

I've been taking advil, icing, applying heat, rolling it, and then attempting to stretch, and doing some yoga. I had a massage on Tuesday too, to see if that would help.

Any ideas that Dr. Google hasn't been able to give me? What would be your next step -- primary care doc? Straight to PT is insurance allows? Any strategies I haven't thought of...? I am training for the PHM, and so far have been totally on track with my runs, etc (including 7miles last weekend, and 9 the weekend before that --- I was scheduled for 11 miles this weekend, but I am hesitant...)

I had something similar. Some soreness in one part of my leg that moved around and changed in intensity. It went from hip to calf to IT band to quad. I went to a sports massage guy a friend recommended and got some active release and graston which did the trick for me. Every runner should have at least one massage person IMO.

If you would like i could add it to the list. Your call.

I do not have any experience with what you are talking about, but wanted to say that I hope you find a solution soon and are running pain free in no time!

It appears i wont be running the Houston Marathon this year,

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat. I've had some personal stuff going on (all good now) that caused my training to go off track so I decided to defer until next year. I'm going to find a half to do in Feb and likely a 10K in March.

ATTQOTD: Tapering has always been mental with me. Its almost like I feel like I'm no longer "training" but instead trying to hold on to my fitness before race day. And i get super impatient because once the taper hits I know race day is getting near.
